The plant produces some 300 cubic meters of water a day, covering 100% of consumption at R<\/span><span>ed Sea Diving Safari\u2019s <\/span><span>Marsa Shagra resort under a 25-year Water Purchase Agreement (WPA), Zahran said. <\/span><span>He declined to disclose the cost of the project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The plant is part-powered by renewables \u2014 and aims to go fully solar-powered by 2033: <\/span><span>Some 30% of the energy used for the desalination plant comes from KarmSolar\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.karmsolar.com\/news\/introducing-the-launch-of-the-marsa-alam-solar-grid\" style=\"\">Marsa Alam Solar Grid<\/a><\/span><span>, which was launched in 2022 and provides electricity to several resorts across Marsa Alam including Marsa Shagra. The company is continually adjusting the energy mix and aims to power the desalination plant entirely through the Marsa Alam Solar Grid within the next decade, Zahran told us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The company says its water is cheaper and better quality than competitors:<\/span><span> Water from the plant is sold to Red Sea Diving Safari at a c. 25% markdown from the market norm and has better salinity than \u201cconventional sources\u201d in the area, KarmWater said in a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/5\/1478.pdf\" style=\"\">press release (pdf)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. \u201cWe\u2019ve been focusing a lot on the quality of water produced and it\u2019s very high,\u201d Zahran told us. \u201cWe are working in areas that already had private water desalination projects. The reason we managed to penetrate\u2026 is because our model was different and our quality was much higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">More in the works: <\/span><span>KarmWater is in discussions to launch several more desalination plants in the area, Zahran told us, without giving further details.
