On the airwaves last night: <\/span>A recap of day two at the AfDB annual meetings, the latest on food <\/span>prices, and more defense of the City of the Dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day two of the AfDB meetings: <\/span>The African Development Bank (AfDB) annual meetings in <\/span>Sharm El Sheikh continued yesterday with the participation of a number of African leaders, including President Abdel Fattah El Sisi who highlighted the bank\u2019s important role in helping struggling nations and providing them with financing solutions. \u201cI take this opportunity to call on multilateral lenders to reconsider the standards and rules that qualify countries for funding facilities,\u201d El Sisi said during his speech. More loans are not the answer, says Lamees:<\/span> \u201cThe truth is we don\u2019t want loans. We want <\/span>investment. Developing countries, low-income countries don\u2019t need loans with interest but rather investment,\u201d Lamees El Hadidi argued on Kelma Akhira (<\/span>watch, runtime: 4:21<\/a><\/span>). It\u2019s a mixed picture for food prices:<\/span> After dedicating <\/span>significant airtime<\/a><\/span> to <\/span>pharma prices<\/a><\/span>earlier in the week, El Hadidi focused last night on food prices, noting that p<\/span>oultry and egg prices have fallen in recent days after the government <\/span>released more chicken feed<\/a><\/span> into the market (<\/span>watch, runtime: 2:45<\/a><\/span>). Rice prices are also sliding due to<\/span> recent imports from India<\/span>, while oil and sugar prices remain stable and dairy products are expected to rise, she said. \u201cAll of this is related to the USD, port releases, and global food prices \u2014 some of which are dropping and some are rising,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Is there hope for the City of the Dead? <\/span>The planned demolition of parts of the historic City of <\/span>the Dead may not happen after all, with Masa\u2019a DMC\u2019s Ramy Radwan (<\/span>watch, runtime: 4:44<\/a><\/span>) <\/span>quoting Cairo governor spokesperson Ibrahim Awad <\/span>as saying that a final decision about whether to demolish some of its tombs hasn\u2019t yet been taken.
