That was the conclusion from the closing panel of last week\u2019s Enterprise Exports and FDI Forum, which featured Abdallah Sallam, CEO of real estate developer Madinet Masr, Nadia El Tawil, investment officer at private equity firm AfricInvest, and Mostafa Bedair, CEO of Giza Seeds and Herbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Back to basics: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"\">It's all about the fundamentals,\u201d said Giza Seeds\u2019 Bedair. There\u2019s room to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">develop agricultural exports from their current level of around USD 3-4 bn annually, he said \u2014 not by running after the latest agritech, but by solving existing problems to improve yields and quality. To do this, we should examine the entire value chain from the start of production to export, he added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Focus on the fundamentals: <\/span><span style=\"\">\u201cWhat we see in our experience, having worked on transactions <\/span><span>all over Africa, is that the companies that succeed are the ones that were built on strong fundamentals,\u201d <\/span><span>said El Tawil. \u201c<\/span><span>Part of that is operating\u2026 in a space where your country or business has a competitive advantage<\/span><span>.\u201d Businesses should ask themselves a few key questions, she said: \u201cW<\/span><span>ho do you want to export to? What do they need? What are their requirements? What facilities do you need to have? And then you build your business with these fundamentals in mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Navigating uncertainty: <\/span><span style=\"\">\u201cYou can\u2019t plan for a crisis, you just have to be prepared,\u201d said Sallam. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cThat's why they call it crisis management, not crisis planning.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Staying on top of industry trends:<\/span><span style=\"\"> O<\/span><span style=\"\">rganizations need to educate themselves about market <\/span><span>trends and what competitors are doing, El Tawil said, noting the importance of having a vision and pivoting the business accordingly. To stay on top of global trends, business leaders and owners should network, attend forums and trade shows, learn from others' experiences, and do their research, as well as get involved with chambers of commerce and trade missions. Government initiatives like the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/itida.gov.eg\/English\/Programs\/EgyptMakesElectronics\/Pages\/default.aspx\" style=\"\">Egypt Makes Electronics<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> program can help bring businesses up to international standards, she added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">\u201cWe're trying to understand our customers,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"\"> Sallam said<\/span><span style=\"\">. <\/span><span style=\"\">Madinet Masr approaches new <\/span><span>projects outside of Cairo as if it is entering a foreign market \u2014 researching the location and then adapting its payment plans, pricing, architectural design, and other factors to suit<\/span><span>. Local businesses <\/span><span>often rely on intuition, he said \u2014 which can bring both benefits and risks. \u201cWhile <\/span><span>intuition<\/span><span> can sometimes work, it's a gamble \u2014 it\u2019s not based on numbers or research<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Have a clear plan:<\/span><span style=\"\"> A well-defined purpose and strategy is essential when seeking FDI, El Tawil <\/span><span>said.
