FinMin takes to the airwaves: <\/span>Finance Minister Mohamed Maait joined El Hekaya <\/span>(<\/span>watch, runtime: 31:44<\/a><\/span>) last night for a 30-minute interview focused on reassuring the public about the economy following a less-than-optimistic review from Fitch Ratings, which last week became the latest rating agency to downgrade our sovereign credit rating (more on that in this morning\u2019s Economy section, above). <\/span><\/p>\n

It has been a tough couple of years: <\/span>\u201cThe Egyptian economy has been under immense <\/span>pressure since the pandemic,\u201d Maait said, pointing to the shock caused by covid-19 and its impact on tourism, exports, and public finances. The country\u2019s recovery from the pandemic was then derailed by the war in Ukraine, which took aim at Egypt\u2019s food security and again disrupted the tourism industry. \u201cWe will overcome this crisis,\u201d he told show host Amr Adib. \u201cWe are confident in the Egyptian economy \u2026 it\u2019s just a matter of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Choice words for rating agencies:<\/span> The minister accused the international rating agencies of <\/span>being biased against Egypt. \u201cThere is <\/span>prejudice <\/span>[against Egypt],\u201d Maait said, adding that a single day could see eight new economic reports on Egypt. Each of the big three rating agencies have taken negative action on Egypt in recent months, with Fitch and Moody\u2019s both downgrading its rating due to the intensifying economic crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
