The decision came into effect on Thursday at 2am CLT. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The price of diesel has now risen 22% since last July<\/span><span style=\"\">, when the government <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59629508-f337-48ec-b80c-092a43eecb30\" style=\"\">increased the<\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59629508-f337-48ec-b80c-092a43eecb30\" style=\"\">price<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> for the first time in years following the commodities shock triggered by the war in Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The rationale:<\/span><span> The price to the government of diesel has risen to EGP 12.25 per liter on the back of higher prices in the global market as well as the EGP devaluation, the Oil Ministry <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid0oqrfaGnTdEUQJNyw5k1GRXj8eL7THZ5BpFUif98gBW2qXS68YaAW4wUxUKZrthYol\" style=\"\">said<\/a><\/span><span> in a separate statement. The hik<\/span><span>e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> will reduce the government\u2019s expenditure on diesel subsidies to an average of EGP 64 bn per year from EGP 80 bn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Expect more inflation:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Diesel is the main fuel used by vehicles that transport goods and ra<\/span><span style=\"\">w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">materials around the country, as well as modes of public transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Public transport fares \u2014 including taxis, microbus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">es <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">and buses \u2014 increased around 10% nationwide on the news<\/span><span>, marking their second fare hike in less than a year when they rose following last July\u2019s diesel price hike.
