<\/span>Is AI changing the face of creative labor?<\/span> The web has been awash with AI-generated art<\/span> in recent months. Photo-editing app<\/span>Lensa<\/a><\/span>, which lets users create ethereal digital paintings of themselves in a variety of genres like fantasy and sci-fi, has taken social media by storm, with over <\/span>4 mn people downloading the app<\/a><\/span> within just the first five days of December. Art generator<\/span>Midjourney<\/a><\/span> creates complex photorealistic or fantastical images of whatever the user fancies following just a few words of description, gaining traction as what <\/span>Bloomberg<\/a><\/span> calls \u201cthe architect\u2019s favorite artificial intern.\u201d In a popular<\/span>video<\/a><\/span> challenging AI to come up with a \u201ca better Drake song than Drake,\u201d <\/span>ChatGPT<\/a><\/span> and<\/span>Uberduck<\/a><\/span> were used to deepfake a humorous song contending that the rapper doesn\u2019t like beans \u2014 in his own voice and style.<\/span><\/p>\n

The technology has hit home for some artists\u2026:<\/span> Leaning into the unlimited abstractions and<\/span> freedom from practical constraints afforded by Midjourney, Egyptian LA-based designer<\/span>Hassan Ragab<\/a><\/span> uses the tool to dream up strikingly fanciful architecture that <\/span>pays homage to Alexandria<\/a><\/span>, his hometown. The art nouveau that characterizes some of the city\u2019s downtown architecture permeates his images. \u201cThese days, it\u2019s hard to implement your ideas unless you\u2019re a very famous architect,\u201d he tells Bloomberg. \u201cThis tool is a great way to explore new visual libraries for architecture, instead of just going on doing what we always do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026And earned others awards:<\/span> At the Colorado State Fair\u2019s art competition in August, game<\/span> designer Jason M. Allen took home the first prize for emerging digital artist for Th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019Op\u00e9ra Spatial, an image he generated through Midjourney. The artwork, which took more than 80 hours to complete, was no simple matter of \u201csmashing words together and winning competitions,\u201d he told <\/span>CNN<\/a><\/span>. After creating a preliminary version of what he envisioned, he tweaked his prompt to produce 900 iterations. Of those, he chose three to edit in Photoshop and run through resolution-enhancing software Gigapixel AI, arriving at his final submissions for the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the opposition is strong:<\/span> Allen\u2019s prize sparked vehement <\/span>backlash<\/a><\/span> on Twitter, with artists<\/span> voicing concerns about being displaced by AI. \u201cWe\u2019re watching the death of artistry unfold before our eyes,\u201d one Twitter user wrote. \u201cIf creative jobs aren\u2019t safe from machines, then even high-skilled jobs are in danger of becoming obsolete. What will we have then?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jitters are growing over AI art\u2019s violation of intellectual property:<\/span> These open-source<\/span> programs are trained on mns of publicly available images scraped from the internet, including copyrighted work, according to the <\/span>Independent<\/a><\/span>. They essentially \u201charvest the stylistic DNA of individual artists,\u201d often without consent or credit. Some lament that AI-generated images go as far as to contain <\/span>warped traces<\/a><\/span> of the original artists\u2019 signatures. \u201cWe could say that, ethically, it\u2019s stealing,\u201d <\/span>CBC<\/a><\/span> quotes Polish Dungeons and Dragons illustrator Greg Rutkowski as saying. Rutkowski\u2019s name has been directly used to create images more than <\/span>93k times<\/a><\/span> on text-to-image generator<\/span>Stable Diffusion<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The muddled relationship between art and AI has culminated in court battles:<\/span> In January,<\/span> stock image supplier Getty Images, which has more than 135 mn copyrighted images under its belt, filed a copyright claim against Stable Diffusion developer Stability AI for having unlawfully used mns of images to train its models, the<\/span>Financial Times<\/a><\/span> reports. While Getty has licensed its images to other AI firms, it claims that Stability AI did not seek licensing rights. The lawsuit is a landmark case; the decision of the UK high court, awaited keenly by the likes of Google, will set a precedent for the legal rights and limitations of firms building AI. In the US, a class-action suit has been filed against Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt by three artists whose work had been used to train the firms\u2019 AI systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

But AI firms are standing their ground:<\/span> Prisma Labs, the company behind Lensa, maintains<\/span> that while \u201cAI produces unique images based on the principles derived from data \u2026 it can\u2019t ideate and imagine things on its own,\u201d it wrote on <\/span>Twitter<\/a><\/span>. \u201cAs cinema didn\u2019t kill theater and accounting software hasn\u2019t eradicated the profession, AI won\u2019t replace artists but can become a great assisting tool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
