But if you like to try it out yourself, here\u2019s a tried and true recipe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">10 digestive biscuits<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">125 grams of unsalted butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">One can of condensed milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Three ripe bananas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Double whipping cream<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Dark chocolate (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">Instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Crush the digestive biscuits in a food processor, or (if you need to channel some anger) by placing them in a plastic bag and smashing them with a rolling pin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Melt the butter and pour it onto the biscuit crumbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Mix well before pressing the mixture into a pie dish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Chill in the fridge for a minimum of 20 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Remove the label off the can of condensed milk, and place the can in a pot of boiling water, making sure that it is completely covered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Simmer for 2-3 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Once the can has been removed and cooled, open it up and pour the toffee onto the biscuit base.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Slice the bananas and place them on top of the toffee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Whip up the cream until it\u2019s thick before spooning onto the bananas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Optional:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Grate some dark chocolate on top for an extra touch of indulgence before serving.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">DID YOU KNOW THERE\u2019S A YEMENI VERSION? For those of us who live in Cairo, Lagnado\u2019s work is an enchanting peek into a distant, glamorous cosmopolitan city set in the 1940s \u2014 nearly a century ago, and many worlds away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">About Lagnado:<\/span><span style=\"\"> The late author was born in Egypt in 1956 and later emigrated to the US <\/span><span>where she grew up in Brooklyn. She worked for over two decades as an investigative journalist for The Wall Street Journal. Her memoir was <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samirohrprize.org\/winners\" style=\"\">awarded<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature \u2014 one of the most prestigious in the realm of Jewish literature. The menu features a range of classic Egyptian dishes, including mezze, grilled meats, and flavorful stews. The food is fresh, flavorful, and expertly prepared, with generous portions that are perfect for sharing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">What to order:<\/span><span style=\"\"> We suggest you start out with their kawari\u2019 soup, which has broth that is both <\/span><span>hearty and flavourful. If you\u2019re not a big fan of kawari\u2019, the orzo soup won\u2019t disappoint. <\/span><span>We won\u2019t waste your time listing the appetizers you should order \u2014 hot or cold, you can\u2019t go wrong.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> We particularly loved the mombar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">For the main course, give their moussaka or molokheya with rabbit a try.<\/span><span style=\"\"> Don\u2019t forget to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">order their eponymous Naguib Mahfouz cocktail, which is an ingenious mix of karkade and tamrehindi. Sweet, but not too sweet, and tart but not too tart, this drink is the stuff of dreams, and a big reason we keep going back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Even though its entrance is tucked away and unassuming, the restaurant is Khan el <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Khalili\u2019s worst kept secret.<\/span><span> To guarantee a table, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KhanElKhaliliRestaurantAndCafe\/\" style=\"\">call ahead<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> and reserve, keeping in mind that seats fill up fast, especially in Ramadan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">?
