<\/span>HoldiPharma<\/a><\/span> is enlisting the private sector to help localize productio<\/span>n: <\/span>State-owned pharma manufacturer HoldiPharma plans to build five new factories in partnership with private-sector firms, <\/span>Asharq Business<\/a><\/span> reports, citing three sources it says are close to the matter. The facilities will require around EGP 2.5 bn of investment and will produce up to 100 different types of raw materials for the pharma industry by 2025, the people said.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have questions:<\/span> It\u2019s not clear what kind of partnerships HoldiPharma is looking to enter, or <\/span>who it is looking to partner with. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mystery Indian firm on board: <\/span>HoldiPharma subsidiary El Nasr Pharma is reportedly in talks <\/span>with \u201cthe largest\u201d Indian pharma raw materials manufacturer to serve as a technical expert on the project, the sources reportedly said, without disclosing the identity of the firm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Localizing the industry:<\/span> The new factories could cover around 20% of domestic demand, <\/span>helping to reduce the sector\u2019s reliance on imports, the sources are quoted as saying. Each plant would have an annual production capacity of up to 70 tons. <\/span><\/p>\n

Exports down the line?<\/span> Raw materials produced by the factories could eventually be exported, <\/span>according to Asharq\u2019s sources. <\/span>The government <\/span>has identified pharma as one of nine sectors to focus on to increase exports to USD 100 bn a year in the next four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where the money\u2019s coming from: <\/span>Some 60% of the investment will come from loans and the <\/span>remainder will be \u201cself-financed,\u201d Asharq reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

REMEMBER- <\/span>T<\/span>he pharma sector has been grappling with the <\/span>im<\/a><\/span>pa<\/a><\/span>ct<\/a><\/span>of import restrictions and <\/span>the FX shortage. <\/span>The industry has called for a reassessment of the government\u2019s mandatory pricing scheme for certain meds and pharma products as supply chain issues and higher shipping rates delay manufacturing and raise production costs. <\/span><\/p>\n

AND- HoldiPharma firms are up for partial privatization:<\/span> Two subsidiaries of HoldiPharma <\/span>have been <\/span>earmarked for<\/a><\/span>stak<\/a><\/span>e sales<\/a><\/span> \u2014 Chemical Industries Development Company and Misr Pharma.<\/span>News reports<\/a><\/span> claimed in February <\/span>that the companies could offer between 30-40% to investor<\/span>s by July<\/span> \u2014 likely in an IPO on the EGX <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>with <\/span>the holding company retaining a controlling interest.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
