Nowhere is that more apparent than with semiconductors, or chips, which are a key component of everything from cars to computers, smartphones, appliances, and medical equipment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Asia dominates global supply chains:<\/span><span> Some <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/strengthening-the-global-semiconductor-supply-chain-in-an-uncertain-era\/\" style=\"\">75%<\/a><\/span><span> of the world\u2019s semiconductor <\/span><span>manufacturing capacity is located in China and East Asia, with Taiwan alone accounting for 92% of advanced chipmaking. Conversely, the US has seen its share <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/turning-the-tide-for-semiconductor-manufacturing-in-the-u-s\/\" style=\"\">fall from 37% in 1990 to just 12% in 2020<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">while Europe accounts for 9%. Western economies are forecast to see their share further decline over the current decade, falling to 10% in the US and 8% in Europe. East Asian economies, meanwhile, are projected to hold 77% of global market share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">A few big players produce most of the world\u2019s chips.<\/span><span> Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing <\/span><span>Company (TSMC) is the world\u2019s biggest chipmaker with a market share of almost 54% of global semiconductor revenues, while Korea\u2019s Samsung has 16.3%, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/867223\/worldwide-semiconductor-foundries-by-market-share\/\" style=\"\">Statista<\/a><\/span><span>. TSMC makes 24% of the world\u2019s chips and more than 90% of the most advanced 5 nanometer (nm) chips used in US fighter jets, iphones, supercomputers, automotive AI, and highest end processors, according to a CNBC documentary (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2kJDTzFtUr4\" style=\"\">watch, runtime: 56:38<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">They\u2019re the same names driving innovation: <\/span><span>TSMC and Samsung are among the only <\/span><span>producers of the smallest and fastest 5 nm chips. Samsung last summer beat its rivals to the punch to manufacture the world\u2019s first 3 nm chip, which the company says upgrades computing performance by 23%, decreases power consumption by 45%, and is 16% smaller than the 5 nm chip. US-based Intel is still struggling to produce its first 5 nm chip, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insiderintelligence.com\/content\/samsung-kicks-off-3-nanometer-chip-production-beating-tsmc-intel\" style=\"\">Insider Intelligence<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> reported last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The US is a major chip buyer \u2014 and it\u2019s worried about its supply chain.<\/span><span> North America accounts <\/span><span>for 65% of sales generated by TSMC, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b006d898-0f46-460b-9abb-3281cdd097de\" style=\"\">the Financial Times<\/a><\/span><span>. That statistic is making US policymakers and businesses worried about escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing over the status of Taiwan, where the company is based. Beijing last year stepped up military drills around the island amid a war of words with the US that saw President Joe Biden <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/09\/20\/biden-would-send-us-troops-to-defend-taiwan-81585\/\" style=\"\">twice issue the unusual warning<\/a><\/span><span> that the US would militarily defend Taiwan against an attack. \u201cIf China would invade Taiwan, that would be the biggest impact we\u2019ve seen to the global economy \u2014 possibly ever\u201d thanks to disruptions to chip supply, Glenn O'Donnell, vice president at research and advisory firm Forrester, told <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tsmc-us-china-tensions-may-dictate-fate-of-global-economy-2022-10\" style=\"\">Insider<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Now Amreeka is playing catch up: <\/span><span>The Biden administration is encouraging major chip makers to<\/span><span> invest bns of USDs to build chip fabrication plants on US soil in a bid to hedge against any future standoffs with China that could trouble supply chains, according to the CNBC documentary. TSMC is building a mega USD 40 bn chip plant in Phoenix, Arizona that is expected to go live by 2024, with more expansion to come. Samsung, meanwhile, is building a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/sas\/Taylor\" style=\"\">USD 17 bn chip plant<\/a><\/span><span> in Texas, also expected to start operations in 2024. And <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-21\/intel-plans-to-spend-20-billion-on-ohio-chipmaking-hub?sref=mmeFTDW1\" style=\"\">Intel is investing USD 20 bn<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> for its own giant chip plant in Ohio, which should begin producing by 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The Biden administration is offering handouts to chipmakers: <\/span><span>US legislators last summer passed the CHIPS Act, which will offer some USD 39 bn in incentives and a 25% tax credit on capex spending to local chipmakers, as well as another USD 13.2 bn for research and development, according to a White House <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/09\/fact-sheet-chips-and-science-act-will-lower-costs-create-jobs-strengthen-supply-chains-and-counter-china\/\" style=\"\">statement<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Micron, Qualcomm and GlobalFoundries announced plans to invest more than USD 44 bn in total to build memory chips and semiconductors in the US in tandem with the introduction of the act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">But some still doubt the business case for US chipmaking. <\/span><span>TSMC\u2019s Phoenix project is facing <\/span><span>doubts over its viability, the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/22\/technology\/tsmc-arizona-factory-tensions.html\" style=\"\">New York Times<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> reports. \u201cTSMC\u2019s investment in the US from a business perspective makes no sense at all,\u201d said Kirk Yang, the head of PE firm Kirkland Capital, citing high costs and managerial problems.
