As scientists and international bodies continue to sound the alarm on the threats a changing climate presents to life on Earth, and those dangers become more widely understood, a trend of abstaining from childbirth is slowly gaining ground. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">About a third of people are putting off having kids due to eco-anxiety:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Some 30% of<\/span><span> people are delaying major life events like having kids due to anxiety about climate change, according to a survey of some 25k people across 25 countries by waste and energy management company Veolia and research firm Elabe cited by <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/01\/23\/a-third-of-people-are-changing-their-plans-for-the-future-because-of-climate-change\" style=\"\">Euronews<\/a><\/span><span>. A separate online survey by <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/millennials-americans-worry-about-kids-children-climate-change-poll-2019-3\" style=\"\">Business Insider<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> in 2019 found that 38% of 18-29-year-olds in the US think couples should take climate change into account in family planning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">That figure is even higher in places at greater risk: <\/span><span style=\"\">In countries like Indonesia, Japan,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Mexico, and Colombia some 33% of people are reluctant to have children due to climate concerns, the Veolia-Elabe survey found. In India, that concern is significantly higher, with 58% reporting that they are putting off giving birth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Wildfires, floods, and drought are not the most pristine backdrops for childhood: <\/span><span style=\"\">The<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg2\/about\/frequently-asked-questions\/keyfaq3\/\" style=\"\">IPCC projects<\/a><\/span><span> that \u201cchildren aged ten or younger in the year 2020 are projected to experience a nearly four-fold increase in extreme events under 1.5\u00b0C of global warming by 2100, and a fivefold increase under 3\u00b0C warming.\u201d These issues are compounded by the fact that threats to water quality and quantity, food production and ecosystem loss are all likely to be experienced by children and potential children due to unmitigated climate change, the international climate body says. For many prospective parents, it is precisely this idea of having children in an increasingly hostile environment that is a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jul\/12\/want-to-fight-climate-change-have-fewer-children\" style=\"\">significant source of stress<\/a><\/span><span> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/15\/parenting\/climate-change-having-kids.html\" style=\"\">anxiety.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">And the effect on children can start before they\u2019re born:<\/span><span style=\"\">Children who are in the womb<\/span><span> during a natural disaster are at a heightened risk of developing psychological disorders later in life than those whose mothers were not exposed to the disaster, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jcpp.13698\" style=\"\">a 2022 study<\/a><\/span><span>. The findings of this paper <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jan\/18\/study-pregnant-climate-disaster-children-behavior\" style=\"\">suggest<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> that the kinds of elevated levels of stress pregnant mothers endure during natural disasters can have significant consequences on children long after they\u2019re born. As extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change, the impact on children could be more widespread. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">There\u2019s also a conservationist case that children can be quite taxing on the environment:<\/span><span>In rich countries, having one less child can equal an average of 58.6 tons of CO2 emission reductions per year, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/aa7541?dom=translatable&src=syn\" style=\"\">a 2017 study<\/a><\/span><span> published in IOPScience. \u201cHaving a child is 7-times worse for the climate in CO2 emissions annually than the next 10 most discussed mitigants that individuals can do,\u201d analysts at Morgan Stanley told <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/12\/climate-change-is-making-people-think-twice-about-having-ch%20ildren.html\" style=\"\">CNBC<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">But some argue that more heads on this planet won\u2019t necessarily be more destructive.<\/span><span>One of the main assumptions in measuring the carbon footprint of new children is that the global energy status quo remains unchanged \u2014 which is a more grim outlook on our global potential.<\/span><span>\u201cIt not only assumes that we don\u2019t decarbonize during the life of the child, but also that we don\u2019t decarbonize during the life of their children, or their children\u2019s children,\u201d US payments company Stripe\u2019s climate research lead tells <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/12\/02\/climate-kids\/\" style=\"\">the Washington Post<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. It is still entirely possible that more extreme levels of warming (anything above 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels) can be avoided, it just requires that more serious global efforts be made to decarbonize sooner rather than later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Still, many have hope that things will get better: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Some 75% of people around the world acknowledge that climate change is a man-made problem and some 60% think that future outcomes are still within our control, according to the Veolia survey. Crucially, most people seem to understand that investments today will cost us less than the damage sustained if unaddressed.
