The consultant will assess the finances, technical implementation, and the cable\u2019s route before a final investment decision is made and construction contracts are signed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The candidates: <\/span><span style=\"\">More than 10 <\/span><span style=\"\">energy consulting<\/span><span style=\"\"> firms are in the running, including French <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/\" style=\"\">EDF<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\">, <\/span><span>Belgium-headquartered <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eliagrid-int.com\/\" style=\"\">Elia Grid<\/a><\/span><span>, Italy\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesi.it\/\" style=\"\">CESI<\/a><\/span><span>, Norwegian<\/span><span style=\"\">-German<\/span><span> firm <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnv.com\/\" style=\"\">DNV<\/a><\/span><span>, Germany\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tractebel-engie.de\/de\/standorte\/europa\/deutschland\" style=\"\">Lahmeyer<\/a><\/span><span>, Ireland\u2019s <\/span><span>ES<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">B, and 4 other unnamed firms that hail from Greece, Belgium, China, and the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">What\u2019s next? <\/span><span style=\"\">The state is expected to sign agreements with a consultant sometime during 2H <\/span><span>2023, a <\/span><span>source <\/span><span>at the Electricity Ministry told us yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Why the delay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">? <\/span><span style=\"\">The devaluation of EGP has prompted a re-study of the project\u2019s costs, our <\/span><span>source tells us, pointing towards import issues \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/01\/29\/imports-backlog-at-ports-is-no-more-says-madbouly-94680\/\" style=\"\">thanks to our backlogged ports<\/a><\/span><span> \u2014 and global disturbances as other factors behind the delay. The EuroAfrica interconnector is among<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> a slew of infrastructure projects in Egypt that have been held back by exchange-rate volatility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Background:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The Greece-Egypt connection is part of the wider USD 4 bn, 3-GW EuroAfrica project that will link the electricity grids of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">EuroAfrica is just one of three Egypt-Greece interconnectors on the table:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Another tw<\/span><span style=\"\">o <\/span><span>direct Egypt-Greece links are being discussed: the 3-GW <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/01\/the-war-in-ukraine-is-accelerating-plans-to-link-our-electricity-grid-to-greece-72429\/\" style=\"\">Greece-Egypt Interconnector<\/a><\/span><span> (GREGY) being managed by Greek infrastructure investor Copelouzos, and the 2-GW <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/02\/us-contractor-mcdermott-to-work-on-greece-africa-power-interconnector-95290\/\" style=\"\">Greece\u2013Africa Power Interconnector<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> (GAP), on which US contractor McDermott is taking the lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Why the dash for Egyptian electricity?<\/span><span style=\"\"> The war in Ukraine and the severing of Europe<\/span><span style=\"\">\u2019s gas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">links with Russia has forced the EU to go in search of new sources of energy.
