It depends. \u201cAre you applying for a job with the circus?\u201d her sister wonders aloud. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Deega has never appreciated the joke \u2014 not now, as she\u2019s job hunting, and not when she <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">was a teenager. <\/span><span>It turns out that \u201cLet her be \u2014 it\u2019s just a phase\u201d was clearly \u201cIt\u2019s not just a phase, Mom. Deega became the pink sheep of the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Just as Woods waltzed through Harvard Law in towering pink heels, so Deega breezed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">through a top US business school. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Her parents invested a small fortune in her education, and Deega delivered, coming home with a 4.0 GPA and impressive internships under her belt. The girl who means business hopes to be headhunted by big firms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Her parents worry about their investment, though: What recruiter will agree to put a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">shocking pink head of hair past the first phase of screening? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Every time the fresh grad mentions she\u2019s going to stop by the hair salon, the whole family stops in its tracks in anticipation. Is this the day she dumps the pink? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">As a close family friend and Deega\u2019s cool honorary aunt, I\u2019ve been summoned more than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">once to play Danny Devito in the family\u2019s re-enactment of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ebv3i_9Ltc&t=13s\" style=\"\">The War of the Roses<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> It goes like this: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">DEEGA:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Ignores everyone, her angry red eyes zoomed in on me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM: Mom sits, an angry wildebeest.<\/span><span style=\"\"> Enough smoke <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">pours from her ears to set off the fire alarms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">ME: <\/span><span style=\"\">Composed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Praying no one ends up hanging from the chandelier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">MOM: <\/span><span style=\"\">\u201cNo respectable company will ever hire a pink-haired punk. They will never take you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">seriously. The guy who interviews you is going to offer you bubble gum, not a job. This pink marshmallow look shouts, \u2018Come on Barbie. Let\u2019s go party.\u2019 It. Is. Not. Professional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">DEEGA: <\/span><span style=\"\">\u201cYou know what, Mom? Anybody who judges my credentials by the color of my hair <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">can go [redacted] themselves. They won\u2019t hire me? I won\u2019t work for hair-color bigots. Right now, as we speak, there\u2019s an employer out there who\u2019s not as judgemental as you are \u2014 one that would love to have my pink head on their team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">So, what does it mean to maintain a \u201cprofessional appearance\u201d in the modern office? <\/span><span style=\"\">Can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">you lead a team, have a strong work ethic, be on time, and always deliver \u2014 all while sporting Bermuda shorts and New Balance sneakers? If you\u2019re a white-collar worker in Egypt and your boss is over the age of, say, 40? Probably not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">In a world of piercings, prominent tattoos, and rainbow hair color, intimate family debates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">have become workplace flashpoints. <\/span><span>A younger, digital-first generation wants to bring their \u201cwhole, authentic selves\u201d to the office \u2014 in crop-tops and joggers if they want. At many companies, the professional grooming teams (read: HR departments and team leaders) are struggling to cope. Deega\u2019s peers might be able to avoid taking style advice from mom and dad, but they can\u2019t escape Mme. Affaf from HR; she doesn\u2019t want a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/runway\/spring-couture-2023\/paris\/schiaparelli\/review\/\" style=\"\">Schiaparelli<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> model walking around her office \u2014 but she does want you in lipstick and straight hair if you\u2019re going to be client-facing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">It\u2019s tempting to blame Mark Zuckerberg and his ilk. <\/span><span style=\"\">Confronted about his bland wardrobe, <\/span><span>the young bn\u2019aire said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/01\/05\/mark-zuckerberg-and-john-paul-dejorias-simple-wardrobe-trick.html\" style=\"\">I feel like I\u2019m not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201d Before the second tech boom \u2014 before Facebook and the rest of the social media platforms \u2014 professionalism and professional appearance coexisted peacefully. Expectations were met, professional attire endured (sometimes even embraced), and HR personnel and job candidates were on the same page. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Work is a stage, and you\u2019ve got to dress the part. <\/span><span style=\"\">And there\u2019s usually a dress code that gets <\/span><span>you through it. For many, following the dress code is a no-brainer \u2014 it\u2019s a constant sign of respect to your coworkers, yourself, and the workplace. Or as Stanford legal scholar Richard Thompson somewhat more grandiosely suggested: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2021\/02\/10\/dress-codes-reveal-politics-social-change\/\" style=\"\">Dress codes are a Rosetta stone to decode social norms and resistance of a time and place<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">WE\u2019VE BEEN FIGHTING OVER DRESS CODE FOR DECADES-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Skimming through the evolution of workplace fashion in the past 100 years, we\u2019re team <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Thompson.<\/span><span> Heck, we even find ourselves in the unusual position of having to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevenpearlman\/2019\/09\/24\/professional-appearance-in-the-workplace-under-scrutiny\/?sh=138376763412\" style=\"\">quote the content mill known as Forbes<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, where a \u2018contributor\u2019 writes, \u201cProfessionalism and professional appearance are nuanced concepts that have become rather sensitive in nature as norms change and culture evolves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">It has always been so: <\/span><span style=\"\">Pre-1960s, men were in suits and ties on even the hottest days of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">summer. For women, long skirts and dresses were as mandatory as the servile roles they were allowed in the workplace. By the 1970s, women were rocking pants (and pantsuits) into the C-suite. The power suits of the 1980s (shoulderpads seemed mandatory for men and women alike) gave way to the advent of \u201cbusiness casual\u201d in the 1990s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Before we knew it, we had a long menu of business looks from which to choose: <\/span><span style=\"\">casual, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">smart casual, business casual, business professional, business formal \u2014 even (you guessed it) gender-neutral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">In choosing to work in a given field, many of us implicitly accept a certain dress code. <\/span><span>Hoodies for coders. Suits for bankers and lawyers (except, maybe \u2014 just maybe \u2014 on casual Thursdays). Yoga pants for pilates instructors. You get the point. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">What if you show up on stage dressed to play your part, but decide to come back after a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">short intermission in a different costume? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">That\u2019s when things really break down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Nereen Salem was Miss Egypt 1989, and she rocked anything she put on \u2014 a bathing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">suit, a pilot\u2019s uniform, and (later) the hijab.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Little did she know that the moment she covered her hair, her career as one of Egypt\u2019s first female commercial pilots would take a nosedive. The chairman of her airline\u2019s board of directors fired her in 2001 after several attempts to get her to take it off. The claim: Her veil violated the company\u2019s uniform code (nevermind that the company\u2019s policy manual at the time made no mention of female pilots at all, let alone hijab). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Nereen won her legal battle, as did <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sikhri.org\/people\/arpinder-kaur\" style=\"\">Arpinder Kaur<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">, <\/span><span style=\"\">the first female Sikh pilot in the US and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">the first Sikh pilot of any gender to wear a turban on the flight deck \u2014 challenging a longstanding flying norm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">So, can an opera singer stand in full costume, staging a production of Opera Aida, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">wear the veil?<\/span><span> Cairo Opera House would say no. In 2003, officials issued a warning to members of the a <\/span><span>cappella <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">chorus who insist on wearing hijab during performances. (The clash of dress codes and religious freedom is too complicated to analyze, even for this column.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">It gets even more interesting when you throw in race: <\/span><span style=\"\">California\u2019s CROWN Act (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/projects\/2022\/hair\/\" style=\"\">Create a<\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/projects\/2022\/hair\/\" style=\"\">Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">) prohibits discrimination against employees (read: Black folks) who choose to go with natural hair or a hairstyle associated with their race or ethnicity. New York City also defends the right to wear natural hair \u2014 or to just leave your hair uncut or untrimmed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\">(May I suggest we need a CROWN Act of our own here in Egypt? One that saves beautiful, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">natural Egyptian curls from the cruelty of flat irons?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">IS THERE A WAY FORWARD FOR DEEGA? FOR US ALL?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">If there\u2019s a common thread in global culture today for the under-40 set, it is, \u201cWhy fit in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">when you\u2019re born to stand out?\u201d <\/span><span>I suspect we face many more years in which the freedom of (self-)expression clashes with office oppression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Still, it\u2019s hard to wonder, as we all bring our authentic selves to the office: Are you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">showing too much of you? <\/span><span>Oftentimes<\/span><span>, the answer hinges on how conservative your boss is. Erin Brockovich made her office mates uncomfortable with her law-office attire. \u201cAs long as I have one <\/span><span>[redacted]<\/span><span> instead of two, I\u2019ll wear what I like if that\u2019s alright with you,\u201d she retorted. Erin was lucky to have Ed Masry, not Red Forman, as her boss \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ja1CuACuEOM&t=5s\" style=\"\">we know exactly where Red\u2019s foot goes when he\u2019s not happy with you<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The truth is, my conservative friends, that the workplace changes constantly, evolving to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">accommodate whatever is thrown its way. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Take covid, which suddenly introduced us to a new kind of professional attire (blazers on top, PJs on the bottom) that we had previously seen only on Balenciaga runway shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Smart bosses know that a flexible company culture is a shock absorber<\/span><span style=\"\"> \u2014 and that should <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">extend to dress code as much as WFH. The simple reality is that a buttoned-down workplace isn\u2019t inviting if you\u2019re seeking young talent. It\u2019s hard enough to get young people to work as corporate drones without forcing them to wear clothing they hate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">We can hear Deega\u2019s mom booing us from the sidelines. <\/span><span style=\"\">She raises valid concerns. Will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">your clients, your regulators, or even other employees be as understanding of your all-inclusive approach? Or will you send them flying in another direction, taking with them their business, goodwill, or experience as they seek out a competitor with the standards and looks they\u2019re familiar with? Deega\u2019s mom interprets her girl\u2019s insistence on pink hair not as an expression of personal freedom, but of her lack of maturity, flexibility, and professionalism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">As for Deega herself? She\u2019s waiting for her Elle Woods moment. <\/span><span style=\"\">Her job hunt continues, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">and she looks forward to triumphantly proving herself an asset to any business she sets foot in \u2014 in all her pink-headed glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Sorry, Deega.
