<\/span>We live in the age of the streaming platform:<\/span> Long gone are the days of waiting <\/span>all week for the next episode of your favorite show: Binge-watching is now the norm. <\/span>That <\/span>prompted a massive pivot <\/span>away from paid satellite TV in MENA<\/a><\/span> (or \u201cdirect to home,\u201d in industry-speak) and from <\/span>cable television in the west<\/a><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

With inflation rising and economic uncertainty a constant issue in mainstream media, <\/span>streaming platforms and traditional broadcasters have taken it on the chin. <\/span>Investors wiped more than <\/span>USD 500 bn<\/a><\/span> from the market value of the biggest companies, putting pressure on streamers to up their games (and their prices).<\/span><\/p>\n

Bye bye, password-sharing, hello price hikes:<\/span> Netflix recently started cracking down on<\/span> <\/span>password sharing<\/a><\/span>, limiting the number of households that can access one account and hiking subscription prices for subscriptions that aren\u2019t <\/span>ad-supported<\/span>. Launching in Egypt only last June, Disney+ has hiked the annual cost of its streaming services<\/span> 21.7% <\/span>from its initial reduced price of EGP 390. Apple TV+ \u2014 a few years older than Disney+ \u2014 has seen a 50% increase in the monthly cost of a subscription. It was priced at only <\/span>EGP 79.99<\/span> back in 2020.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This makes life harder for binge-watchers:<\/span> Mns of Netflix users will be booted out of their<\/span> friend\u2019s \/ partner\u2019s \/ coworker\u2019s \/ parent\u2019s Netflix accounts and forced to create one of their own once the password-sharing limits hit Egypt as part of the platform\u2019s <\/span>phased rollout<\/a><\/span> \u2014 and they\u2019ll have to do so in an environment of heightened prices. <\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you don\u2019t want to pay north of <\/span>EGP 500 every month on streaming platforms that<\/span> you end up never using<\/span>, here\u2019s a handy guide to help you choose the ones that fit your taste, budget and streaming needs. <\/span><\/p>\n

NETFLIX<\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING- <\/span>Netflix<\/a><\/span> recently reduced its prices for Egyptian watchers \u2014 the monthly cost of a<\/span> <\/span>basic plan (which only supports one device streaming at a time) is EGP 70, a standard plan (supporting two devices and showing \u201cfull HD\u201d content) is EGP 120 and a premium plan (supporting four devices + showing \u201cultra HD\u201d content + spatial audio features) costs EGP 165. <\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> Synonymous with streaming, Netflix has been producing original content<\/span> since 2011. Fan favorites <\/span>The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Stranger Things<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Wednesday<\/a><\/span> are all Netflix originals, and the streaming platform has fostered awareness of new actors and foreign language shows like <\/span>Squid Game<\/a><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>It also has a wealth of classics, from <\/span>Seinfeld<\/a><\/span> <\/span>to Egyptian black and white films.<\/span><\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s catalog of original and licensed TV shows and movies differs <\/span>country-to-country<\/span>. We\u2019re doing pretty well in Egypt coming in at number 16 of countries with the most TV shows (168) and films (426) available \u2014 although we only have 14.5% of the US TV library and 9.27% of the film library, according to <\/span>SecureThoughts<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY?<\/span> Parents can customize what content children can see by adjustin<\/span>g the ratings<\/span> restrictions and can block specific titles from showing up for their children. You can also completely lock your profile with a password.<\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY?<\/span> Netflix is by far the most user-friendly streaming platform on this list. The <\/span>app works on all types of phones, in all regions, and has foreign language options and content.<\/span><\/p>\n

AMAZON PRIME VIDEO<\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING-<\/span> <\/span>Amazon Prime Video<\/a><\/span> comes in at<\/span> EGP 29 monthly and EGP 249 annually. <\/span>Bonus<\/span> tip:<\/span> Amazon also has <\/span>Freevee <\/span>(formerly IMDb TV) \u2014 a no-charge, ad-supported streaming service with original and licensed content.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> Prime Video has also had hits with originals, <\/span>The Boys<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Hunters<\/a><\/span> and the<\/span> most expensive show ever made, <\/span>The Rings of Power<\/a><\/span>. The platform has a different library depending on the country you\u2019re in, and it allows you to stream only selected Amazon Original titles if you travel outside of your home country, in a section labeled \u2018Watch While Abroad\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY?<\/span> <\/span>Yes, you can password-lock your profile on Amazon Prime. <\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY?<\/span> Not the easiest of platforms to navigate, it can be difficult to differentiate <\/span>between paid content and content you can access without charge on Prime Video. <\/span><\/p>\n

APPLE TV+ <\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING-<\/span> <\/span>Apple TV+<\/a><\/span> costs <\/span>EGP 119.99 a month<\/span>, but every purchase of an Apple device<\/span> <\/span>comes with <\/span>three months of unpaid access<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> <\/span>Apple TV+ is a drop in the ocean compared to Netflix, providing only<\/span> original content. The streamer has pumped big bucks into its productions, like <\/span>The Morning Show<\/a><\/span>, which was produced with a <\/span>USD 300 mn budget<\/a><\/span>, and is the home of breakout stars, <\/span>Pachinko<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Ted Lasso<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Bad Sisters<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY?<\/span> <\/span>Yes, Apple TV+ allows you to restrict content or lock your profile with a<\/span> password. <\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY?<\/span> Apple TV+ has a slightly maze-like layout \u2014 its streaming services are<\/span> housed within a larger Apple TV app that also includes your iTunes library and content from other connected streaming services, which can be confusing. Apple TV (different to TV+) is the umbrella term for Apple\u2019s living room strategy that contains all the hardware, software and streaming services sharing the Apple TV name. A number of <\/span>streamers (130+) <\/span>allow their subscribers to access content through the Apple TV app. That includes HBO Max, Disney+ and Amazon Prime, but not Netflix. <\/span><\/p>\n

DISNEY+<\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING-<\/span> Launched in Egypt only last year, an account with <\/span>Disney+<\/a><\/span> will set you back <\/span>EGP<\/span> 49.99 monthly<\/span> or <\/span>EGP 498.99 annually<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> <\/span>Disney+ is full of family favorites that parents will love as well. The platform<\/span> holds the majority of the Disney and Pixar libraries, recent studio releases like <\/span>Encanto<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Turning Red<\/a><\/span> and the Star Wars and Marvel franchises. <\/span>Disney+ shows largely identical content around the globe, with slight regional differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Like Netflix, the streamer provides <\/span>parental controls for kid\u2019s profiles that allow<\/span> parents to customize what children<\/span> can watch. <\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, the layout is simple and easy to navigate.<\/span><\/p>\n

OSN+<\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING- <\/span>OSN+<\/a><\/span> standard plan comes in at <\/span>EGP 90 a month<\/span>, providing SD <\/span>content and allowing only one device to stream content at the same time. The <\/span>premium <\/span>plan \u2014 which provides HD content and allows you to stream on two devices simultaneously \u2014 costs <\/span>EGP 140 a month<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> The platform owns the rights to HBO, Paramount and NBC \/ Universal,<\/span> which means it provides access to a large number of Arabic and English-language films and TV shows (and some Turkish too). Big hitters include <\/span>The White Lotus<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Succession<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>The Last of Us<\/a><\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>House of the Dragon<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, you can lock your own accounts with a password and set your kids\u2019<\/span> profile to kids mode. <\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY? <\/span>No complaints here, though the app has bugged out for us quite a few<\/span> times, with episodes ending abruptly mid-viewing. <\/span><\/p>\n

TOD<\/span><\/p>\n

This one\u2019s for the sports buffs: <\/span>TOD<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>beIN\u2019s streaming <\/span>service,<\/span> provides Arabic, Turkish, international, and children\u2019s entertainment content, but its strong suit is definitely sports. The app has a tab dedicated to football coverage, and broadcasts international league<\/span> matches on top of basketball, tennis, golf and more<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING- TOD Total<\/span>, which includes TOD originals, shows and movies as well as plenty of <\/span>sports-focused content, will set you back EGP 429.99 a month, while <\/span>TOD Theatre<\/span>, which houses <\/span>TOD Originals and Arabic and Turkish content, but no sports broadcasts, costs EGP 119.99.<\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, you can lock your profile and create a kids\u2019 profile on TOD. <\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, it passes our test. <\/span><\/p>\n

FOR MOSALSALAT LOVERS- <\/span><\/p>\n

With Ramadan round the corner, Shahid VIP and<\/span> Watch It have you covered for where to watch this year's mosalsalat <\/span>\u2013 both offer wide coverage of Arabic-language content.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

SHAHID- <\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING- <\/span>Shahid<\/a><\/span> <\/span>has <\/span>mobile only subscriptions (which also work on tablets) for <\/span>EGP 19.99 a<\/span> month<\/span>, which can be used on one <\/span>device <\/span>at a time. T<\/span>he platform\u2019s <\/span>VIP package costs EGP 59.99 monthly <\/span>and can be used across 20 devices (mobile, TV or laptop) and offline, while the <\/span>VIP Sports <\/span>package costs <\/span>EGP 109<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH-<\/span> <\/span>Shahid holds what it says is the Arab world\u2019s biggest streaming library with original <\/span>Egyptian, Khaleeji, Turkish and Indian shows, including <\/span>Room 207<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>The Accused<\/a><\/span>, and every year comes out with its own original Ramadan releases. <\/span>The VIP sports membership provides access to the Saudi sports live channel, Saudi competitions hosted in the country and some international football leagues. <\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, you can lock your profile and create a separate account for the kids.<\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY? <\/span>The platform isn\u2019t the most user-friendly out there; its episodes are usually<\/span> listed in order of most recent, rather than in sequence \u2014 which has inadvertently spoiled many, many shows for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

WATCH IT <\/span><\/p>\n

PRICING-<\/span> <\/span>Arabic content platform, <\/span>Watch It<\/a><\/span>, provides <\/span>monthly or annual packages<\/span> for <\/span>one <\/span>screen at <\/span>EGP 50 a month<\/span>, <\/span>two screens at EGP 80 a month,<\/span> and <\/span>three screens at EGP 110 a mont<\/span>h<\/span>. If you subscribe now, the price is <\/span>60-70%<\/span> lower as part of their<\/span> <\/span>pre-Ramadan packages<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO WATCH- <\/span>The platform streams a lot of exclusive Ramadan series, and also provides a lot of <\/span>original content to watch year-round, including Egypt\u2019s version of <\/span>Shark Tank<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

KID-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Yes, you can lock your profile and create a separate profile for the kids.<\/span><\/p>\n

USER-FRIENDLY? <\/span>Not really \u2014 the app can be very buggy, especially in the post-Iftar<\/span> streaming rush hours of Ramadan, where some episodes won\u2019t load at all. <\/span><\/p>\n

HAVE A FAVORITE VPN? You can access a lot of British content without charge:<\/span> Terrestrial platforms like the UK\u2019s <\/span>BBC iPlayer<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>ITVHub<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>All4<\/a><\/span> all have a wide selection of shows and films \u2014 including some of our favorite reality shows (<\/span>The Great Pottery Throwdown<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>The Traitors<\/a><\/span> are our guilty pleasures.) You don\u2019t need to pay to subscribe, but you\u2019ll need a VPN to access any of them; we recommend <\/span>ExpressVPN<\/a><\/span> <\/span>or <\/span>NordVPN<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fan of the less conventional? <\/span>There are plenty of platforms offering more niche content.<\/span> <\/span>BroadwayHD<\/a><\/span> provides recorded plays and musicals, films inspired by Broadway shows and famous concerts for USD 11.99 a month or USD 129.99 a year. One for film connoisseurs, <\/span>Mubi<\/a><\/span> has impeccably curated films, leaning towards arthouse and independent content, for USS 5.99 a month. <\/span>Crunchyroll<\/a><\/span> houses the world\u2019s largest anime library with more than 40k episodes and over 16k hours of content, and has three subscription tiers starting at USD 7.99 a month. Horror streamer <\/span>Shudder<\/a><\/span> (you\u2019ll need a VPN) has a backlog of cult classics, Hollywood favorites and original productions for USD 5.99 a month or USD 56.99 a year.<\/span><\/p>\n
