The new technology represents a risk so substantial that current management at Google <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/20\/technology\/google-chatgpt-artificial-intelligence.html\" style=\"\">called in<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> the company\u2019s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, for ideas on how to maneuver the looming threat of generative AI. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Traditional search engines could become obsolete in the near future: <\/span><span style=\"\">The introduction of<\/span><span> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/12\/20\/there-is-now-ai-that-can-write-full-and-relatively-good-essays-for-you-a-friendly-reminder-that-spotify-wrapped-is-an-example-of-massive-data-surveillance-91829\/\" style=\"\">ChatGPT<\/a><\/span><span>, Open AI\u2019s generative AI-based software that can churn out essays, poems, code and thoughtful responses to questions rather than links to potential answers in the way a basic search engine like Google does, could potentially wipe out many users\u2019 reliance on traditional search engines for basic, straightforward information. Already, a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/01\/24\/the-big-tech-downturn-cant-be-uncoupled-from-monetary-tightening-is-the-spotlight-on-burnout-going-to-push-change-94400\/\" style=\"\">third of white-collar employees<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> in different industries \u2014 including banking, tech, and marketing \u2014 have tried using AI-based platforms and tools at work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Google has typically been hesitant to roll out chatbots in the past, probably for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> good reason:<\/span><span> Google parent Alphabet launched Bard, its AI chatbot response to ChatGPT, last month \u2014 but Bard <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/09\/this-morning-we-should-be-getting-januarys-inflation-figures-today-google-just-botched-the-launch-of-its-rival-to-chatgpt-96065\/\" style=\"\">made a factual error<\/a><\/span><span> in Alphabet\u2019s presentation, causing investors to worry that Alphabet is losing ground to Microsoft in the AI race. The botched launch came after Google was previously reluctant to come out with an AI-powered chatbot due to copyright, privacy, antitrust issues it finds central to the technology in its current form. According to a recording <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/21\/technology\/ai-chatgpt-google-search.html\" style=\"\">obtained by the NYT<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, Chatbots\u2019 history of delivering racist and sexist responses are also to blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">This wasn\u2019t Google\u2019s first go at AI: <\/span><span style=\"\">Google\u2019s LaMDA \u2014 or Language Model for Dialogue<\/span><span> Applications \u2014 made headlines <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/13\/potential-google-whistleblowers-warns-of-sentient-ai-corporations-carbon-zero-plans-are-ineffective-in-the-fight-against-climate-change-73607\/\" style=\"\">last year<\/a><\/span><span> after a company engineer falsely claimed the chatbot had achieved sentience. The company is also planning to release some 20 new products including a chatbot-equipped version of its classic search engine at some point this year, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/20\/technology\/google-chatgpt-artificial-intelligence.html\" style=\"\">the NYT reports<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, citing a private Google presentation it viewed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">AI-driven search is bad for business: <\/span><span style=\"\">One of the biggest challenges traditional search<\/span><span> engines are facing with the rise of these generative AI systems is the question of monetization, specifically how to run the digital ads that are central to their business model. Ads comprised some <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.xyz\/investor\/static\/pdf\/20210203_alphabet_10K.pdf?cache=b44182d\" style=\"\">80% of revenue<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> for the company in 2021. Having chatbots come up with responses in sentence form makes it less likely that users will click on a sponsored link or come across a digital advertisement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">But it doesn\u2019t necessarily seal Google\u2019s fate:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Even with the popularity of generative AI<\/span><span> systems likely to continue growing over the coming years, it's not yet clear that they\u2019ll completely replace traditional search engines. One of the reasons is because systems like ChatGPT and Neeva are subject to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2022\/12\/chatgpt-openai-artificial-intelligence-writing-ethics\/672386\/\" style=\"\">inaccuracy<\/a><\/span><span> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-12-08\/chatgpt-open-ai-s-chatbot-is-spitting-out-biased-sexist-results\" style=\"\">bias<\/a><\/span><span>.<\/span><span> Another defining feature that makes search engines useful amid generative AI popularity is that they offer user direct access to sources. \u201cSolutions like ChatGPT, they offer you an answer, Google is offering you results. So, if you get results, you can choose \u2014 you can read more than one opinion,\u201d CEO of AI-search engine Nuclia tells <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/techmonitor.ai\/technology\/emerging-technology\/generative-ai-isnt-google-killer-but-will-change-search-forever\" style=\"\">TechMonitor.<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Microsoft has been going big on AI: <\/span><span style=\"\">Microsoft said <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/23\/how-are-companies-actually-using-chatgpt-and-hows-it-working-out-97824\/\" style=\"\">in January<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\"> that it would be making a<\/span><span> multi-bn USD investment in OpenAI, which sources close to the agreement estimate could be worth <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a6d71785-b994-48d8-8af2-a07d24f661c5\" style=\"\">some USD 10 bn<\/a><\/span><span>.
