<\/span>F<\/span>oreign Minister Sameh Shoukry became the first Egyptian diplomat to make official <\/span>visits to Syria and Turkey in a decade yesterday<\/span> after he flew to the two earthquake-hit countries for talks with <\/span>Syrian President Bashar Al Assad<\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Damascus:<\/span> Egypt will provide more aid to Syria and has already shipped 1.5k tons, Shoukry <\/span>told reporters following meetings with Al Assad and <\/span>Syrian Foreign Minister Faisel Mikdad<\/a><\/span>, according to <\/span>Reuters<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>\u201cThe goal of the visit is primarily humanitarian, and to pass on our solidarity \u2013 from the leadership, the government and the people of Egypt to the people of Syria,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n

A return to the Arab League?<\/span> Shoukry\u2019s trip comes a day after Egypt House Speaker Hanafi <\/span>Gibali <\/span>traveled to Damascus<\/a><\/span> as part of a delegation of Arab officials to discuss bringing the country back inside the Arab League. Syria was booted out of the organization in 2011 in response to the government\u2019s suppression of anti-Assad protesters. <\/span><\/p>\n

In Adana:<\/span> <\/span>Shoukry traveled to the quake-hit southern Turkish province of Adana for <\/span>talks with<\/a><\/span>Cavusoglu<\/a><\/span>. The two diplomats visited the port of Mersin, to witness the <\/span>arrival of a shipment of Egyptian aid<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tentative moves: <\/span>The two countries have been inching towards normalizing relations in recent <\/span>months following a series of exploratory talks. President El Sisi and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan <\/span>shook hands<\/a><\/span> during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Turkish this month pledged to <\/span>invest USD 500 mn<\/a><\/span> in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Normalizing ties:<\/span> In a televised interview yesterday, Shoukry said that his visit to Syria and <\/span>Turkey \u201creflects the interest for relations between Egypt and the two countries return to their normal status\u201d (<\/span>watch, runtime: 5:18<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

El Sisi + Erdogan to meet again? <\/span>\u201cDuring our talks today, we exchanged views on mutual <\/span>visits in the upcoming period. Our deputy foreign ministers met twice before, and it would be beneficial for them to meet again,\u201d Reuters reports Cavusoglu as saying yesterday. \u201cAfter our talks, our presidents can meet either in Turkey or Egypt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
