Last Night\u2019s Talk Shows:<\/span> Commodities and food prices were the main topic of <\/span>conversation on the airwaves last night, while the country\u2019s maiden sukuk issuance continued getting attention and Masa\u2019a DMC\u2019s Ramy Radwan did his best to make us all feel better about the current economic situation. <\/span><\/p>\n

Contract farming and food prices led the conversation on the talk shows last night:<\/span> The <\/span>government\u2019s decision to hand farmers a guaranteed price for selling corn, soy and sunflower <\/span>crops was covered across the airwaves last (check out this morning\u2019s Also on our Radar for more details). Cabinet spokesman Nader Saad appeared on Al Hayah Al Youm (<\/span>watch, runtime: 9:13<\/a><\/span>) while an Agriculture Ministry official phoned in to Yahduth Fi Masr to explain the decision. Masaa DMC also had coverage (<\/span>watch, runtime: 1:01<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

At least we\u2019re not Venezuela:<\/span> That was the message delivered by Masa\u2019a DMC\u2019s Ramy <\/span>Radwan last night, who eagerly pointed out all the countries that currently have higher inflation rates than Egypt (<\/span>watch, runtime: 3:49<\/a><\/span>) and noted ongoing <\/span>food shortages in the UK<\/a><\/span> (<\/span>watch, runtime: 3:09<\/a><\/span>), before mounting a defense of the Egyptian economy and the government\u2019s handling of the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rising chicken prices were given particular attention<\/span>, with Radwan talking to an industry <\/span>figure about the government\u2019s plan to increase imports (<\/span>watch, runtime: 9:07<\/a><\/span>) and Ala Mas\u2019ouleety\u2019s Ahmed Moussa accusing producers of undermining authorities\u2019 attempts to solve the crisis (<\/span>watch, runtime: 3:13<\/a><\/span>). Rice also got a mention:<\/span> With the <\/span>lifting of the price cap<\/a><\/span> last week sending rice prices soaring, <\/span>Radwan opted to cover yesterday\u2019s <\/span>purchase of 50k tons of imported rice and spoke to Ragab Shehata, the head of the Federation of Egyptian Industries\u2019 rice division, about how imports will impact the market (<\/span>watch, runtime: 6:42<\/a><\/span>). <\/span><\/p>\n

Sukuk for dummies<\/span>: Egypt successfully wrapping up its maiden sukuk issuance yesterday <\/span>under a three-year, USD 5 bn sukuk program got coverage, with Yahduth Fe Masr\u2019s Sherif Amer trying to help viewers get the hang of the concept. Mohamed Hegazy, head of the Finance Ministry's debt management unit, joined Amer to discuss the issuance (<\/span>watch, runtime: 5:29<\/a><\/span>). <\/span><\/p>\n
