LAST WEEK IN 3 MINUTES-<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span> It was a busy week on the investment front (and for FDI in particular)<\/span>, with investors pledging to <\/span>pump money into Egypt to expand their operations in fields ranging from oil and gas to textile and data centers.<\/span><\/p>\n

#1-<\/span> <\/span>DATA CENTERS:<\/span> El Sewedy Data Centers and the UAE\u2019s <\/span>Gulf Data Hub<\/a><\/span> <\/span>plan to invest<\/a><\/span> <\/span>USD 2.1 bn to build three data center complexes here, which together would form the African continent\u2019s largest data hub. <\/span><\/p>\n

#2- TEXTILES + APPAREL:<\/span> A number of <\/span>Turkish<\/span> textile and apparel companies <\/span>plan to invest<\/a><\/span> a <\/span>combined USD 500 mn to expand their activities here, following a meeting between company reps and Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly.<\/span><\/p>\n

#3- OIL AND GAS: <\/span>There were tons of investment pledges from oil and gas firms coming out of <\/span>the <\/span>Egypt Petroleum Show (Egyps)<\/a><\/span>, with Oil Minister Tarek El Molla <\/span>saying<\/a><\/span> Egypt could see some USD 8 bn of FDI from oil and gas firms this year<\/span>. He name-checked <\/span>Exxon Mobil<\/span>, <\/span>BP<\/span> and <\/span>Shell<\/span> as some of the players looking to boost operations locally. Emirati outfit <\/span>Dana Gas<\/span> <\/span>also said<\/a><\/span> it plans to invest USD 100 mn in our oil and gas sector over the next two years, while London-headquartered exploration and production outfit <\/span>Energean<\/span> <\/span>plans to invest<\/a><\/span> USD 350 mn in its <\/span>Abu Qir concession<\/a><\/span> this year. <\/span><\/p>\n

BEYOND INVESTMENTS, EGYPS ALSO GOT US TONS OF EXPLORATION + EXPORT <\/span>UPDATES:<\/span> On the export front, El Molla said we aim to increase LNG exports by around 40% starting 2025, the majority of which will be earmarked to the European market. Around <\/span>80% of the 7.5 mn tons of LNG<\/a><\/span> Egypt exported last year went to Europe, he also said, adding that exports this year are expected to remain flat. <\/span><\/p>\n

On the exploration front: <\/span>Croatian oil and gas company <\/span>INA<\/span> and UK-based <\/span>Energean<\/span> can <\/span>now begin exploratory drilling at their 50-50 East Bir El Nus concession in the Western Desert. <\/span>Meanwhile, <\/span>EGAS<\/span> and our friends at <\/span>Cheiron<\/span> got the green light from the House of Representatives to go drilling for gas west of the Burullus offshore field in the Mediterranean.<\/span> <\/span>Global majors <\/span>Chevron<\/span>, <\/span>Shell<\/span>, and <\/span>Apache<\/span>, and tech outfit <\/span>IBM<\/span> signed agreements on low(er) carbon projects, crude exports, and digital transformation with the Oil Ministry and affiliated firms. <\/span><\/p>\n

WE ALSO GOT UPDATES ON THE STATE PRIVATIZATION PROGRAM-<\/span><\/p>\n

#1- Two Saudi banks have United Bank on their radar:<\/span> Riyadh-listed Saudi lenders Riyad <\/span>Bank and shariah-compliant lender Al Rajhi Bank <\/span>are reportedly<\/a><\/span> looking to either fully acquire or buy into state-owned United Bank. <\/span><\/p>\n

#2- Helwan Fertilizers up for grabs to strategic investors?<\/span> The government is reportedly <\/span>looking to sell up to 20% of the state-owned <\/span>Helwan Fertilizers Company<\/a><\/span> to strategic Gulf investors, with PIF and Abu Dhabi\u2019s wealth fund ADQ both eyeing stakes in the fertilizers company.<\/span><\/p>\n

#3- A new state-owned company that will own a portfolio of seven five-star properties <\/span>nationwide <\/span>could offer<\/a><\/span> as much as 20-30% of its shares to private investors<\/span>. <\/span>The seven hotels on offer reportedly include the Cairo Marriott Hotel in Zamalek and Marriott Mena House next to the pyramids complex.<\/span><\/p>\n

#4- Pachin bidders are evaluating their positions:<\/span> Compass Capital, Eagle Chemicals and <\/span>the Abu Dhabi-based National Paints Holding (NPH) are reportedly rethinking their takeover bids for EGX-listed Paint and Chemical Industries (Pachin) following its inclusion in the state privatization program. <\/span><\/p>\n

AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF M&A NEWS\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n

Adnoc Distribution<\/span> <\/span>completed its acquisition<\/a><\/span> of <\/span>TotalEnergies<\/span>, one of Egypt\u2019s largest fuel <\/span>retailers, while <\/span>EFG Hermes<\/span>\u2019 second-largest shareholder, Tim Collins\u2019 Ripplewood, sold two thirds of its position to Abu Dhabi-based investment firm <\/span>Chimera<\/span> and JS Holding Ltd. <\/span>Meanwhile, <\/span>Gulf investors<\/span> are said to be interested in <\/span>taking a piece<\/a><\/span> of a merged<\/span> Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals \/ Ethydco <\/span>once the two complete their tie-up.<\/span><\/p>\n

ALSO WORTH NOTING-<\/span> <\/span>Our <\/span>external debt <\/span>dropped<\/a><\/span> for the second consecutive time <\/span>by 0.5% <\/span>q-o-q to just under USD 155.0 bn in 1Q FY 2022-2023, <\/span>down from <\/span>USD 155.7 bn<\/a><\/span> in the fourth quarter of last fiscal year, according to central bank figures. <\/span><\/p>\n

HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>We could be getting our maiden sovereign sukuk: <\/span>Egypt is <\/span>reportedly planning<\/a><\/span> <\/span>to issue its first sovereign sukuk next week, following a roadshow that should have started last week. The final timing will depend on \u201cmarket conditions,\u201d sources in the know were quoted as saying. <\/span><\/p>\n

What to expect: <\/span>Bloomberg reported that the issuance could be worth up to USD 1.5 bn, while <\/span>FinMin has previously said it will look to issue <\/span>USD 1.5-2.5 bn<\/a><\/span> of the shariah-compliant bonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moody\u2019s, meanwhile, has weighed in on an offering worth up to USD 5 bn, <\/span>having given<\/a><\/span> <\/span>a (P)B3 rating to a potential USD 5 bn sukuk issuance by the Finance Ministry\u2019s sukuk company. The issuance will be used to \u201cfinance investment and development projects included in the economic and social development plan in the state's general budget,\u201d Moody\u2019s said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also: we\u2019ll be keeping an eye out for news from the senate<\/span>, which will reconvene on <\/span>Sunday \u2014 and for more <\/span>on the state privatization program, where we understand investment banks have gotten their first mandates <\/span>for IPOs.<\/span><\/p>\n
