Some of the sessions coming up this afternoon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An address by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/special-address-by-olaf-scholz-federal-chancellor-of-germany-5e67274b0b\">German Chancellor Olaf Scholz<\/a> at 4:45pm;<\/li>\n<li>An address by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/special-address-by-volodymyr-zelenskyy-president-of-ukraine-068bdf6a88\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> at 6pm;<\/li>\n<li>A session titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/restoring-security-and-peace\">Restoring Security and Peace<\/a> feat. NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg at 6:15pm;<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/the-middle-east-meeting-point-or-battleground\">session on the Middle East<\/a> feat. the Saudi and Iraqi foreign ministers and Jordan\u2019s finance minister at 6:30pm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>From our very own: <\/strong>International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat returned to the Davos stage this morning for a session focused on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/rewiring-the-globe-for-resilience\">green transition<\/a>. She\u2019ll also be back on Friday for a session on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\/sessions\/how-to-turbocharge-development-finance\">development finance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND- Planning Minister Hala El Said sat down with Saudi Arabia\u2019s Economy and Planning Minister Faisal Al Ibrahim<\/strong> at Davos to discuss cooperation between Cairo and Riyadh amid the global economic crisis, according to a Planning Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QLc2wj\">statement<\/a>. Both ministers exchanged viewpoints on the turbulent economic conditions. They also touched on policy-level cooperation between the two countries, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The mood has seemingly lifted since yesterday to reveal higher-than-expected lev<\/strong><strong>els of <\/strong><strong>(cautious) optimism for the global economy:<\/strong> IMF deputy managing director Gita Gopinath, forecast that we will see \u201cimprovements\u201d in the second half of the year and heading into 2024, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e8177fda-7d4e-42d6-83ab-65d2766a32e4\">Financial Times<\/a>. Gopinath\u2019s remarks signal that the fund is upgrading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e9c4743b-945d-422b-8f4b-3c2a8a237b70\">their economic forecasts<\/a> ahead of the release of their 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/WEO\/Issues\/2023\/01\/31\/world-economic-outlook-update-january-2023\">World Economic Outlook Update<\/a> on 31 January. Other participants at Davos also shared optimistic outlooks with China\u2019s re-entrance into the market as Beijing lifts covid-19 curbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Although the UN chief has more doom and gloom to share:<\/strong> UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the world is in a \u201csorry state\u201d due to the many \u201cinterlinked\u201d challenges that are \u201cpiling up like cars in a chain reaction crash,\u201d referencing climate change and Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, during his message to the forum today (<a href=\"https:\/\/media.un.org\/index.php\/en\/asset\/k1o\/k1o7sf82x5\">watch, runtime: 42:27<\/a>). Geopolitical division and global mistrust are hindering efforts to tackle the many crises facing the world, which include inequality, soaring inflation, an energy crunch, supply-chain disruptions and more, Guterres said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE-<\/strong> As the folks in Davos ruminate over deglobalization and a potential east-west bifurcation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/74f7e284-c047-4cc4-9b7a-408d40611bfa\">Financial Times<\/a> was out this morning with a front-page big read on how Apple might go about detaching itself from China.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is in Abu Dhabi, where he and<\/strong><strong> Jordan\u2019s King Abdullah II will meet with the leaders of GCC countries<\/strong> to discuss cooperation between the counties, according to an Ittihadiya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/pfbid03DJF7gj69fMda3jYESRERvjYsBSd2zrFe5kUg8HtgVbj5y2iVPDA8Ntmf5Jd6i2xl\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Ukrainian interior minister + other top officials die in helicopter crash: <\/strong>Investigations are underway as a Ukrainian State Emergency Service helicopter crashed into a residential area in Brovary city, near Kyiv.
