The EUR 157 mn contract includes one gift train and 20 years of maintenance and is financed by a 30-year facility at 1% interest rate with a five-year grace period, he noted. \u201cSome in the media claim that the Talgo trains cost the state budget too much money, but let me respond to this as I have nothing to fear,\u201d said El-Wazir. \u201cWe are not brokers, but officials loyal to our country.\u201d The Talgo trains will begin operating on the Upper Egypt line next week, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9caeb5cc-ff7b-4dc0-a3d4-1ba35ad64fbe\">Bashteel station<\/a><\/strong><strong> in Giza will open its doors in March<\/strong>, El Wazir said. Bashteel lies between Ramses and Giza and aims to alleviate congestion at Ramses station. It will serve as Cairo\u2019s main station for trains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.gov.eg\/En\/NewsDetails.aspx?NewsID=1587\">to and from Upper Egypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Road spending rise? <\/strong>The 10-year plan that the government kicked off in 2014 to upgrade some 10k km of roads will have cost as much as EGP 1.96 tn by the time it wraps in 2024, El Wazir said. That\u2019s nearly 80% higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/02\/17\/concrete-or-asphalt-what-works-best-for-egypts-road-infrastructure-32299\/\">EGP 1.1 tn cost<\/a> El Wazir estimated back in 2020. Some four-fifths of the roadworks are now complete, he added. \u201cThese roads are important to accommodate population growth and serve industrial and agricultural projects and the movement of trade,\u201d El Wazir said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO FROM THE HOUSE- <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> Economic Affairs Committee<\/strong> is this week set to conclude its discussion of the <strong>Unifed Ins. Act<\/strong>, which the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cea77833-386b-467f-8909-3d305087d7d6\">approved<\/a> last April.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Defense and National Security Committee<\/strong> approved a draft law that would give <strong>village mayors and sheikhs<\/strong> more security powers, as well as toughening penalties against them for ethics violations. <\/li>\n<li>The <strong>CIT Committee<\/strong> approved a draft bill establishing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0e91cb15-5151-475a-a80d-90205c0e59b3\">Digital Egypt Fund<\/a><\/strong>. The bill was<a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/News\/483238.aspx\">approved by the Senate<\/a> in December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DATA POINT- Suez Canal revenues rose 46% y-o-y in January to USD 717 mn<\/strong>, Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie told the House Defense and National Security Committee yesterday. Some 1.95k ships transited the canal this month, up 21% y-o-y.
