<\/a> The EU isn\u2019t happy with our human rights record: <\/strong>The European Parliament last week released a resolution<\/a> criticizing Egypt\u2019s human rights record and calling for a \u201creview of the EU\u2019s relations with Egypt in light of the very limited progress on Egypt\u2019s human rights record and of its crackdown on dissent, despite continuing support from European partners.\u201d The joint motion \u2014 which seems to have already been debated and passed by European lawmakers \u2014 also called for the immediate and unconditional release of a number of political activists, journalists, lawyers and social media influencers, including British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Egyptian MPs push back: <\/strong>Egyptian parliament members attacked the resolution for being \u201carrogant,\u201d \u201cpoliticized\u201d and full of \u201cmisguided information,\u201d they said in a statement cited by Ahram Online<\/a>. They pointed to a number of factual inaccuracies in the statement, including that our years-long state of emergency is still in effect, despite President Abdel Fattah El Sisi ending<\/a> it last year, and that Egypt sentences minors to the death penalty, which the MPs said is banned under legislation protecting children. \u201cLet us advise the EP that instead of using undocumented and misguided information about the situation of human rights in Egypt, it is better for its members to focus on the challenges facing human rights in the European Union countries \u2026 We see there is a systematic violation of human rights among EU countries,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
