How do we preserve and strengthen the ties that make us all a team? The FT\u2019s management editor, Andrew Hill, shares our preoccupation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3c3f5f1e-8402-4331-8591-e2b667873605\">This is our big chance to create better workplaces<\/a> (part of the FT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/rebootingworkplace\">new series on reinventing the workplace<\/a>) but doesn\u2019t yet have much in the way of answers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the worm turning against WFH? <\/strong>Blackstone and Advent are paying for taxis and covid-19 tests to bring staff back in, convinced that private equity can only be successful if there is \u201cface-to-face contact and relationship-building,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cd281b9e-83f3-4916-94a2-e82336d21eb3\">the FT<\/a> tells us. And <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/netflixs-reed-hastings-deems-remote-work-a-pure-negative-11599487219\">Netflix CEO Reed Hastings calls remote work a \u201cpure negative\u201d<\/a><\/strong> in a really solid interview, even as he leaves his team at home until \u201cprobably six months after a vaccine\u201d is introduced. \u201cDebating ideas is harder now,\u201d he says, clearly looking forward to a day when \u201cthe five-day workweek will become four days in the office while one day is virtual from home.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile: <\/strong><strong>It\u2019s inflation day: <\/strong>Capmas and the CBE are expected to release inflation data for August today. Annual headline inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/55dfb38b-b3e4-4641-ba16-43c9425307a9\">fell to 4.2% in July<\/a> from June\u2019s seven-month high of 5.6% as food prices fell for the third consecutive month. Pharos Holdings is expecting annual inflation to inch back up to some 4.5% in August and end the year at 6%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This month\u2019s figure is expected to feature heavily on the CBE\u2019s monetary policy <\/strong><strong>committee<\/strong> when it meets to decide on interest rates on <strong>Thursday, 24 September<\/strong>. We\u2019ll have our customary poll of analysts ahead of the decision for some guidance on which way things could go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep an eye on food prices in particular: <\/strong>Global food prices reached a 6-month high in August thanks to the confluence of a weak USD and stronger global demand for commodities used in food production, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/worldfoodsituation\/foodpricesindex\/en\/\">Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Food Price Index<\/a>. Food prices were up 2% m-o-m in August, for a third consecutive month, according to FAO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes as we still face the prospect of a \u201cdisruption in domestic food <\/strong><strong>supply chains\u201d thanks to the pandemic<\/strong>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/agriculture\/brief\/food-security-and-covid-19\">the World Bank<\/a> recently noted. Food insecurity could still show up later as farmers face challenges in getting food products to market and getting their hands on production inputs.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-08\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>So much for the global markets meltdown? <\/strong>The EGX mirrored regional exchanges, closing down just 0.2% yesterday. Trading was moderate, with EGP 1 bn-worth of shares changing hands \u2014 10% below the trailing 90-day average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over in the US and Europe, investors are buying the dip from <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6000d48a-dc88-4df7-a6c9-c743d0e2f90e\">the US tech<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6000d48a-dc88-4df7-a6c9-c743d0e2f90e\">selloff<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> The Nasdaq had its best day since April, rising 2.7% as investors jumped back into tech stocks following a three-day sell-off that plunged the index into correction territory. The S&P, Dow and Euro Stoxx all closed up 1.6-2.0%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Futures at dispatch sign point to lower openings <\/strong>today for Wall Street, the DAX and Euro Stoxx, but Asian markets are broadly in the green in early trading.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Brent crude <\/strong><strong>clawed its way above USD 40 \/ bbl<\/strong><strong> amid the broader market<\/strong><strong> rebound,<\/strong> rising 2.1% during trading. US crude also bagged gains, up 3.5% to finish at USD 38\/bbl. <strong>Don\u2019t expect this to last though, as Saudi Arabia refuses to cut production<\/strong>, fearing that doing so would only lead to OPEC+ producers taking advantage and increasing supply, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ad2dd18b-21a7-40c6-8fbb-2a670e879a0a\">Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources familiar with the Kingdom\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>The Health Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33dMf7p\">reported<\/a><\/strong><strong> 175 new covid-19 infections yesterday<\/strong>, down from 187 the day before. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 100,403 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 17 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 5,577. We now have a total of 80,689 confirmed cases that have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Covid-19 has been good to Souq: <\/strong>Amazon\u2019s Souq has seen both new customer numbers and orders figures rise in Egypt over the past few months as shoppers go online thanks to covid-19, Egypt CEO Omar El Sahy told <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/3\/12\/379467\/Business\/Economy\/INTERVIEW-Egypt-is-a-large,-important-market-for-S.aspx\">Ahram Online<\/a>. The increase was significant in the FMCG sector, especially groceries, hygiene products, and WFH supplies, El Sahy added. \u201cWe have also seen an increase in purchases in lifestyle categories, including kitchenware, entertainment and sports equipment.\u201d <strong>Souq sees online commerce continuing to boom<\/strong>, and there\u2019s plenty of room to row: The Institute of National Planning reports that just 8% of the country\u2019s total internet users (or 4.8 mn people) made online orders before the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical industry wants permission to resume exports as export ban is set to expire:<\/strong> The Medical Industry Export Council is lobbying the government to put an end to an export ban on protective equipment as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/af81957d-44fe-4def-a044-69261abcceb7\">local demand slides<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/09\/08\/1380708\">the domestic press<\/a> reports. \u201cThe state should capitalize on production surpluses,\u201d by allowing exports, at least until the threat of a second wave becomes clear, said council chairman Maged George. The request ahead of the Trade Ministry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4155b862-a216-403f-ad34-18a6b40ebf19\">six-month export ban<\/a> on masks, disinfectants and PPE ending in mid-September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"https:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/9\/SOMA-ENTERPRISE-AUG2-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a move afoot to make us kiss and make up with Qatar? <\/strong>David Schenker, the US State Department\u2019s top diplomat for the Middle East, said that negotiations to end the three-year boycott of Qatar by Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia are becoming more flexible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-gulf-crisis-qatar-usa\/progress-in-resolving-gulf-arab-rift-could-come-within-weeks-u-s-official-says-idUSKBN2602JW\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That contract Ethiopia signed in June to lobby the US doesn\u2019t seem to be working out <\/strong><strong>too well for them \u2014 will they rehire or fire?<\/strong> After Ethiopia <a href=\"https:\/\/efile.fara.gov\/docs\/6594-Exhibit-AB-20200714-4.pdf\">enlisted US law firm Barnes & Thornburg (pdf)<\/a> to lobby for US support for their position on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam at the end of June, the US has since taken a public stance on the dispute by <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/42548a58-6d51-48b8-8290-7ff439f618e0\">suspending some USD 100 mn of aid<\/a> to Addis Ababa for failing to reach an agreement. With the three-month contract expiring at the end of September, will the Ethiopians be looking to renew the contract?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is still <\/strong><strong>hammering out a new trade agreement with<\/strong> <strong>the UK as Britain braces for a hard exit from the European Union<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Talks are still focused on final details including the volume of Egyptian agricultural exports that will be sent to the UK and the customs we\u2019ll see imposed on the goods, according to Ahmed Maghawry, head of the Commercial Representation Authority at the Trade Ministry, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=09092020&id=46a8560d-a917-4106-83f5-f9e64c79be3e\">Al Shorouk<\/a>. <strong>The <\/strong><strong>talks are expected to come to a close by the end of 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, Boris is still wildin\u2019 out at the Brexit talks:<\/strong> Boris Johnson is still urging UK MPs to support a bill that the European Union thinks is a contravention of international law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-54003483\">the BBC<\/a> reports. The Internal Markets Bill would see the UK breach the Withdrawal Agreement by ignoring customs terms agreed for Northern Ireland, a move that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said \u201cundermines trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In related news, the European Central Bank (ECB) is urging banks to pick up the pace<\/strong> <strong>in relocating operations from the UK to the EU <\/strong>as they approach the Brexit transition deadline at the end of this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-09\/ecb-keeps-up-pressure-on-banks-to-deliver-on-brexit-preparation?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>US ELECTION WATCH- Is this the worst-case election scenario for an America <\/strong><strong>divided? <\/strong>Data analytics company Hawkfish is sounding a pre-emptive alarm over the possibility of what it\u2019s terming a \u201cred mirage\u201d on the night of the US election. In an interview with Axios that aired on HBO last week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C74GXN2fock\">watch, runtime: 6:43<\/a>), Hawkfish\u2019s CEO says that it is likely that The Donald will appear to have won on election night, but as mailed in ballots are tallied over the following week \u2013 an estimated 40% of the electorate \u2013 the election may end up swinging to former VP Joe Biden. With a highly polarized electorate and the Trump campaign sowing doubt over the integrity of the vote, we could be in for a heated conclusion to the race. <strong>Sounds about right, if you ask us, but keep in mind: Hawkfish is a creation of Mike Bloomberg <\/strong>and so just may have a vested interest in the outcome here.<\/p>\n<p>More news from the campaign trail:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald Trump knew about the severity of covid-19 since March, but chose <\/strong><strong>to downplay it at his rallies and briefings <\/strong>to prevent nationwide panic and project the image of a strong, resilient US, according to a new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-reaction-woodward-interview-coronavirus\/2020\/09\/09\/fc21e67e-f2ca-11ea-b796-2dd09962649c_story.html\">the Washington Post<\/a> reports. The book is due out on 15 September (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rage-Bob-Woodward-ebook\/dp\/B0881XTWZW\/\">Amazon<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have a new poll from battleground states, and it\u2019s not looking great for Trump:<\/strong> The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Politics_Polls\/status\/1303638877488504834\">Morning Consult poll<\/a> shows Biden ahead in every state, leading by 10 points in Michigan and 8 points in Wisconsin. The Democrat isn\u2019t doing as well in Florida, but <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/election-update-polls-are-good-for-biden-pretty-much-everywhere-except-florida\/\">FiveThiryEight still thinks he has a 74 in 100 chance of winning<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Alexandria to become a Wizz Air destination \u2026 once Abu Dhabi opens up: <\/strong> Europe\u2019s third-largest discount carrier Wizz Air may have to delay the planned 1 October launch of its new airline in Abu Dhabi if the foreign visitor ban isn\u2019t lifted soon, CEO Jozsef Varadi told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-09\/wizz-air-to-delay-gulf-startup-if-abu-dhabi-doesn-t-reopen-soon\">Bloomberg<\/a>. One Wizz Air plane is already in Abu Dhabi while another one should be arriving within the next few days, \u201cbut really we need Abu Dhabi to open up so that people can actually fly,\u201d said Varadi. The Emirate is only <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bce083c8-5ec4-4320-8a4b-37500f241595\">allowing<\/a> UAE citizens or diplomats from abroad to enter the country with requirements of a PCR test before departure as well as a mandatory self-quarantine on arrival.
