You can expect to hear in the next day or two that the stock exchange, banks and the private sector are also off.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>That 1% \u201ccorona tax\u201d on all salaries is now real: <\/strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2DPMygi\">has signed<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2DPMygi\">into law<\/a> the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6ac71923-d25f-4737-b794-a57cb8c44f9a\">corona tax<\/a>\u201d bill that requires companies to dock 1% from all employees\u2019 net monthly salaries for 12 months. Anyone with a salary is subject to the 1% levy, whether they\u2019re private or public sector. Pensioners will see 0.5% less in their monthly allowance during the same period, with all proceeds placed in a special \u201cepidemics and natural disasters\u201d account at the CBE to support the drive to protect the nation from the pandemic. <strong>Look for guidance from the taxman as early as this week on when the measure officially goes into effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3h0RUn0\">MPs are back from a three-week recess today<\/a><\/strong><strong> for another three days of <\/strong><strong>plenary sessions.<\/strong> Tuesday will be the House of Representatives\u2019 last session before it finally adjourns for its summer recess, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/376756\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypts-parliament-to-hold-last-session-before-summ.aspx\">Ahram Online<\/a> reports, citing an unnamed source. It remains unclear whether parliament will reconvene in October ahead of elections for the House, which are expected in November, the source says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the bills up for discussion this week<\/strong> \u2014 it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess at this point how much of the list MPs will be able to get through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b157b40b-45d7-455d-9b8f-a52f21851d0e\">The draft Unified Tax Act<\/a>, which would create a single platform for filing income tax, VAT, stamp tax, and real estate tax returns.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5824242a-5089-48ae-b0aa-94e3a6209a12\">Amendments to the Microfinance Act<\/a> that would introduce new capital requirements on SME lenders, and bring them within the scope of the legislation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/343FOWS\">A six-month extension<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/25\/egypts-parliament-approves-temporary-law-settling-building-code-violations-9071\/\">the temporary law for settling building code violations<\/a>, which is scheduled to expire on 30 September.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/143cc594-d6be-4809-afc3-695ae7f3d8ef\">A bill to simplify the commercial registry<\/a> which would see new businesses registered under one roof.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/354eed98-c451-46a6-b115-b0fdbf28692d\">Amendments to the Intellectual Property Protection Act<\/a> that would reduce patent licensing fees for applicants below the age of 21.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7c32de5f-0152-4aac-8649-33c7a167939e\">Amendments to the Electricity Act<\/a> that would impose harsher penalties on electricity company employees who illegally provide connections to the power grid or refuse to install connections.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/31QuXg2\">The new Customs Act<\/a> that would expedite clearance through a white list of importers, broaden the powers of customs clearance agents, and include customs breaks for local manufacturers, among other things.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8b4dd432-1356-4a15-bc7b-3ea35cb4269e\">Amendments to the criminal code<\/a> that would protect the identities of victims of harassment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The results of last week\u2019s Senate elections are due this Wednesday<\/strong>, with any runoffs set for 8-9 September. Voters will elect 200 members of the newly reconstituted upper house of parliament, with the other 100 set to be appointed by the presidency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EGP WATCH- EGP hits 10-week high against the greenback:<\/strong> The EGP gained almost three piasters against the USD on Thursday, rising to 15.88. Madbouly also discussed Egypt and Sudan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3a67dcca-de16-4313-b330-60fc1a21e6db\">electricity interconnection project<\/a> with the deputy head of the country\u2019s governing council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>The Health Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/posts\/211247187092568\">confirmed<\/a><\/strong><strong> 17 new deaths from covid-19 yesterday<\/strong>, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 5,141. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 96,336 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported <strong>116 new infections yesterday<\/strong>. We now have a total of 58,835 confirmed cases that have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New infections have eased in recent days <\/strong>after rising into the 170-range last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parents are getting a partial rebate on school bus fees from the 2019-2020 school year:<\/strong> The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) decided last week that school bus fees paid to cover the second term of the 2019-2020 academic year will be deducted from tuition fees charged for the 2020-2021 academic year, CPA Head Ahmed Samir said on Extra News (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-B9FqEPYX2k\">watch, runtime 06:29<\/a>). <strong>Non-compliant schools will be fined<\/strong> between EGP 10k and EGP 1 mn, while repeat offenders will be slapped with a fine between EGP 20k EGP 2 mn. Parents <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3ef986dc-7fdf-429f-a2ac-37a078e138b7\">have complained<\/a> that they were made to pay bus fees despite students moving to online learning after the government closed schools due to covid-19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting yesterday, foreign tourists need to show a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ff9d3841-7ad6-40f1-9887-caf589a202fa\">negative PCR test<\/a><\/strong><strong> for the virus that<\/strong> <strong>causes covid-19 <\/strong>taken within 72 hours of flying to Egypt. Some tourists were turned back on landing yesterday when they could not produce the certificate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/2011642\">Al Masry Al Youm<\/a> reports. Airlines bringing in passengers who can\u2019t produce the tests on landing could face fines, the Civil Aviation Ministry said. Passengers travelling on direct flights to Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, and Matrouh airports will be exempt, as are all Egyptian nationals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cairo coffee shop, restaurant owners are still pushing to be allowed to stay open past <\/strong><strong>midnight<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Y5ZXrf\">Al Mal<\/a>.
