Cabinet has yet to make clear how long the break will last, but we expect to be back to work on Tuesday, 4 August.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Madbouly government announced a series of measures related to Eid<\/strong>, the highlight of which is that we\u2019ll soon see some form of enhanced contact tracing. We have chapter and verse in Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The same announcement suggests that conference season will resume as soon as we all <\/strong><strong>come back from Sahel: <\/strong>Cabinet will now <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32SkxhX\">allow conferences and meetings<\/a> of no more than 50 people provided the capacity of the conference venue is sufficient for at least 100 people. The government is also preparing to <strong>allow expos and large gatherings as of October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Restaurants, cafes and retail stores are getting the longer hours they\u2019ve been lobbying <\/strong><strong>for:<\/strong> The Madbouly Cabinet also decided to allow restaurants and cafes to remain open until midnight instead of 10pm, and raise their maximum capacity to 50% from 25%. Retail stores and malls will be allowed to keep their doors open until 10pm instead of 9pm. These measures come into effect today. The shortened hours were first in effect to clamp down on the spread of covid-19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the House is in recess <\/strong>(look for some news, though, as a number of committees continue to meet) and <strong>MPs are due back in the House by 16 August<\/strong> after the 11-12 August elections for the Senate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect to see lots and lots of campaign ads and billboards tomorrow <\/strong>as the campaign period officially opens. Some 762 candidates are vying for seats, head of the National Elections Authority Lasheen Ibrahim said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2020\/7\/23\/%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%81%D8%B5%D9%84-%D9%81%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%B9%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%B3-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D9%8A%D9%88%D8%AE-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%82%D8%B6%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%89\/4894831\">Youm7<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Among the things that should be on your radar this morning:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#1- The US won\u2019t admit new students whose universities are going to online-only <\/strong><strong>instruction. <\/strong>If you or your spawn are heading to the US as a student for the first time this fall, you may want to check in with the school. US Customs and Immigration enforcement \u201csaid on Friday that newly enrolling international students won\u2019t be allowed to come to the U.S. if their courses will be taught entirely online,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ice-says-newly-enrolling-international-students-can-t-come-to-u-s-if-classes-fully-online-11595611772\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of college: <strong>US parents want tuition breaks, too<\/strong>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/41bdaca1-1988-4fac-9204-4ff4e70b36cc\">Financial Times<\/a>. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/blackboards\/told-us-thought-e-learning-took-feedback-schools\/\">Egyptian parents of K-12 aged kids<\/a> have been <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/blackboards\/really-think-e-learning\/\">asking for breaks<\/a> on tuition as schools move to distance education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Plenty of companies are now second-guessing whether they want to be remote <\/strong><strong>forever. <\/strong>While we still believe that many (and certainly not all) \u201cknowledge-worker\u201d jobs can be done remotely, companies are waking up to the question of how you build a team and culture when we \u2014 as social animals \u2014 can never meet face to face. Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/companies-start-to-think-remote-work-isnt-so-great-after-all-11595603397\">Companies start to think remote work isn\u2019t so great after all.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>All Enterprise staff have worked at least part of the month from home <\/strong>since we got started, and we can tell you this: Culture is built in the office, and tested on WFH.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Prepare for the latest round of hand-wringing over passive vs. active approaches to <\/strong><strong>fund management. <\/strong>Bears are still calling a 20-30% \u201ccorrection\u201d in frothy western markets, but for the time being, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c64871d8-08cb-40cc-a87c-15b3b555a663\">passive funds are \u201cbattering active\u201d managers so far this year<\/a>, the Financial Times reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#4- No, you can\u2019t get covid-19 twice<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/22\/health\/covid-antibodies-herd-immunity.html\">New York Times<\/a>\u2019 Apoorva Mandavilli reports \u2014 reminding us all of basic immunology known for at least 30 years (like since one of us was taking second year biochemistry): Antibodies in your blood trail off, but there\u2019s a small army of memory cells that help you respond with tons of newly made antibodies if you\u2019re challenged by the virus again.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The number of single-day infections in Egypt fell to a low not seen since 17 May <\/strong><strong>yesterday,<\/strong> after the Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jGTpZu\">confirmed<\/a> 511 new cases of covid-19. The country now has a total of 91,583 infections and 4,558 deaths after the ministry yesterday reported 40 new fatalities. <strong>The single-day death count hit a new six-week low on Friday<\/strong> when the ministry reported just 38 new deaths. We now have a total of 32,903 cases who have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most new covid-19 cases are in people who exhibit only minor symptoms<\/strong>, Hossam Hosny, the head of the scientific committee of the state\u2019s anti-covid task force, said during an interview on Al Hadath TV on Saturday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ECedcNu270A\">watch, runtime 5:57<\/a>). He added that <strong>there is still a possibility that a second wave could emerge<\/strong>, but that there are also positive signs that a vaccine could reach the market by December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cafes and restaurants in new developments will have usufruct fees waived for the period <\/strong><strong>of lockdown<\/strong> and will only pay 25% of the fees owed from 27 June, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcities.gov.eg\/dis_N_17-3-2019.aspx?ID=1508\">New Urban Communities Authority<\/a> said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The global pandemic is continuing to break records:<\/strong> A record 284,196 new cases were reported on Friday, almost half of which came from the US and Brazil, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200724-who-reports-record-single-day-increase-in-global-coronavirus-cases\">the World Health Organization said<\/a>. There were 9,753 deaths in the 24-hour period, the highest number since the record high of 9,797 were reported on 30 April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global infections topped 15 mn on Wednesday<\/strong> and are now climbing rapidly towards 16 mn, data collected by Johns Hopkins University shows. \u201cAlmost 40 countries have reported record single-day increases in coronavirus infections over the past week,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-global-cases\/record-numbers-of-coronavirus-cases-in-every-global-region-reuters-tally-idUSKCN24Q08E\">Reuters<\/a> reports, about double the rate of the previous week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US reported over 1k covid-19 deaths for the fourth day running on Friday,<\/strong> with a daily count of over 75k new cases, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/25\/world\/coronavirus-covid-19.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage#link-67763577\">New York Times<\/a>\u2019 tally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fears of a second wave are gaining ground in Europe,<\/strong> as Spain, France and Germany report rising case numbers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-53539015\">BBC<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>India reported its largest single day surge of covid-19 infections with 49k new cases on <\/strong><strong>Friday,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL3N2EV1KZ\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"https:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/7\/somabay-july26-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>GLOBAL MACRO- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s going to be a big week for the US markets:<\/strong> A spate of tech earnings, preliminary 2Q GDP figures, a Federal Reserve meeting, and (potentially) agreement on a new fiscal stimulus bill all make this week one of the \u201cnewsiest\u201d (as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/24\/here-comes-one-of-the-newsiest-and-most-critical-weeks-of-the-summer-for-markets.html\">CNBC<\/a> terms it) weeks of the summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A little bit of good news for brokerage and research houses in our corner of the world: <\/strong><strong>MiFID II <\/strong><strong>is being relaxed <\/strong>thanks to covid-19. A newly approved \u201ccapital markets recovery package\u201d includes \u201ctargeted amendments\u201d to Mifid II requirements that had, among other things, forced brokerages to charge market value for access to research. The rules, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_1382\">announced on Friday<\/a>, will allow the rebundling of research on companies worth less than EUR 1 bn and on fixed-income markets, according to documents seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-22\/europe-readies-mifid-rollback-to-increase-recovery-investment\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qatar Airways is suing Egypt <\/strong>as it launches an international arbitration case seeking at least USD 5 bn from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain for blocking flights in their airspace and access to their markets as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/10\/22\/rex-tillerson-blames-arab-quartet-for-lack-of-progress-on-resolving-qatar-dispute\/\">boycott of Qatar<\/a> that started in June 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/qatar-airways-sues-seeks-5b-boycotting-countries-71915496\">the Associated Press reports<\/a>. The airline has not specified where it initiated the arbitration, but in a statement said it involves three separate agreements: a bilateral investment treaty between Egypt and Qatar, the Organization of the Islamic Conference Investment Agreement, and the Arab Investment Agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nothing says economic recovery like record-high g<\/strong><strong>old prices: <\/strong>Gold prices surged to record highs during trading on Friday, as a handful of less-than-optimistic trends fuel a rush into the safe haven asset. Bullion surpassed previous 2011 highs to hit USD 1,902.02 an ounce last week as investors \u2014 wary of the unprecedented wave of liquidity injected into the global financial system, the cratering bond yields, the USD\u2019s dive against the EUR and JPY and the threat of more lockdowns \u2014 seek safety in the precious metal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And with data like this, gold probably isn\u2019t going to lose its shine anytime soon:<\/strong> A string of real-time economic trackers are showing that the US recovery is losing steam and about to go into reverse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/economic-recovery-stall-coronavirus-stimulus-19cfb417-c428-4f22-80c5-5e6d5afbd7ef.html\">Axios<\/a> reports.
