Don\u2019t discount the staying power of the country\u2019s shop owners and big retailers on this one. \u2014 it\u2019s really impossible for us to imagine no midnight eating or shopping in our city that never sleeps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re still in the grip of an oddly-timed news slowdown. <\/strong>This is Enterprise\u2019s sixth summer and the twentieth summer reporting on our fair country for at least one of the olds among us. So trust us when we tell you this: There\u2019s no such thing as a \u201csummer slowdown\u201d in Cairo (though the Dog Days of August are very real). We suspect it may be a case of folks being a bit tired out after nearly four months of covid and WFH \u2014 coupled with government attention being paid to the situations with Ethiopia and Libya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Random observation: We\u2019ve always wanted to live in one of the foreign tourism videos<\/strong> <strong>put out by the Tourism MInistry.<\/strong> Its latest \u2014 emphasizing measures in place to protect visitors from corona \u2014 is no exception (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/eg.ExperienceEgypt\/videos\/vb.219622564855803\/281953432951397\/?type=3&theater\">watch, runtime: 2:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need a dose of optimism? Egypt has now disclosed a total of 58,141 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported <strong>1,323 new infections yesterday<\/strong>. We now have a total of 17,022 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 15,535 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isolation hospitals have reached 59% of their total capacity, while 71% of ICU beds are <\/strong><strong>currently occupied<\/strong>, said Health Minister Hala Zayed, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37YT2Ee\">a cabinet statement<\/a>. Around 23% of the available ventilators are also currently in use, Zayed said. There are 367 state facilities \u2014 including university hospitals \u2014 authorized to treat covid patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After yesterday\u2019s crushing news that <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cfeb522b-8ce9-4e1e-8341-234f43abf1c3\">no foreign pilgrims<\/a><\/strong><strong> would be allowed to go on Hajj<\/strong>, Cabinet spokesman Nader Saad was on the airwaves to reassure Egypt\u2019s faithful that everyone who had a slot for pilgrimage this year will see their place roll forward to 2021 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eEpTwiDj4BE\">watch, runtime 1:06<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The academic year for Egypt\u2019s universities will now end on 15 September<\/strong> to accommodate end-of-year exams, which will begin on 1 July, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YWrfQA\">a cabinet statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An additional 35 hotels have received health and safety certificates<\/strong> allowing them to reopen at reduced capacity, bringing the total number of hotels the Tourism Ministry has licensed to reopen to 301, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ARD7eN\">Al Shorouk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image stand-out-borderless' ><a href='https:\/\/somabay.com\/'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/SOMA-ENTERPRISE-3-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a \u201cwarning to poor nations,\u201d covid is tearing into Latin America<\/strong>, which accounted for nearly half the world\u2019s covid-19 deaths in past two weeks \u2014 and where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-races-across-latin-america-a-warning-to-poor-nations-11592950314?mod=hp_lead_pos5\">WSJ<\/a> says mns are falling back into poverty<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US\u2019 leading disease expert Anthony Fauci is \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d about a vaccine <\/strong><strong>becoming available by the end of the year<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/a36ac8c2b3edf7f9c41f850e945c32e8\">Associated Press<\/a> reports.
