The sound made even the non-travelers among us all very happy.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>We set a new single-day record yesterday for deaths and infections<\/strong>, capping a three-day run of covid news in which the Madbouly government suggested some flights may resume in July. Meanwhile, curfew is now an hour shorter, running 8pm-4am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look for covid and the House of Representatives to dominate the news agenda here at<\/strong> <strong>home this week. <\/strong>Lawmakers are <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fn5JuG\">due to debate<\/a> the nation\u2019s draft FY2020-2021 budget and the bill that will establish the Senate as a reconstituted upper house of parliament.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up for a final vote this week:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/628a9e60-3aad-4b58-9f57-ad0747b79588\">draft Central Depository Act<\/a>, amendments to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\">Railway<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\">Act<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01f8af18-ba6f-485d-a1ce-f608f149eb59\">Infectious Diseases Act<\/a>, and the Police Authority Act, as well as a bill regulating parking lots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re heading to the polls once more this year<\/strong> to elect members to the Senate and the House of Representatives, most likely in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/08\/parliamentary-elections-to-be-held-at-the-end-of-2020\/\">November or December<\/a> after the latter convenes again for its final session. That said, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/372024\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypt-to-hold-Senate-elections-in-August-Report.aspx\">Ahram Online<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairo24.com\/2020\/06\/12\/%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%B1%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%80%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A9-24-%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%87-%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%AC%D8%B1\/\">Cairo 24<\/a> suggest we may be voting for the Senate in August, citing what they said was a report by state-owned Akhbar Al Youm. No other media outlets have picked up the news and we weren\u2019t able to track down the piece in Akhbar, so take that with a grain of salt for the moment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the global front: We suspect we\u2019ll be seeing plenty of hand-wringing this week about<\/strong> <strong>whether financial markets are in tune with economic reality. <\/strong>US shares suffered on Thursday their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-6-11-2020-11591853228\">worst one-day slump in three months<\/a>, with the Dow off nearly 7% and the S&P down just about 6%. Oil also took it on the chin as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/11\/business\/market-drop-coronavirus.html?referringSource=articleShare\">\u201cat least for a day, reality triumphed over hope on Wall Street.\u201d<\/a> Equities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-6-12-2020-11591937954?mod=markets_lead_pos1\">clawed back<\/a> a bit of ground on Friday, but still finished in the red for the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the Department of the Obvious: <\/strong>\u201cThe idea that Covid is fully behind us, or that a V-shaped recovery is in front of us, were put on hold\u201d on Thursday, one analyst told the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What next? <\/strong>Concerns on both sides of the Atlantic. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 42,980 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported 1,677 new infections yesterday (and 1,577 new cases on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MUb7tg\">Friday<\/a>). We now have a total of 12,919 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 11,529 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two more doctors pass away from covid-19: <\/strong>Deputy Director of the National Heart Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YAvHo5\">Yousry Kamel<\/a> and gynecologist <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UFny0o\">Adel Abdul Azim<\/a> passed away over the weekend from covid-19. We reported <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1853ca2e-78cd-4a9a-ac69-221dd9a9cddc\">last week<\/a> that some 50 physicians have died of the illness, leading the Medical Syndicate to call on the Health Ministry to up its efforts to protect medical workers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Housing Minister Assem El Gazzar is self-isolating for two weeks<\/strong> after coming into contact with someone infected with the virus, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2C3qGwA\">Masrawy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sports activities and events will be resumed in August and training camps for athletes <\/strong><strong>will be allowed to restart in July<\/strong> on the condition that sports clubs and youth centers sterilize their facilities, Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi told OnTime Sports (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yMb3tzEBZoc\">watch, runtime: 31:52<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A total of 232 hotels in 13 governorates are now permitted to operate at reduced capacity<\/strong> after another 14 received health and safety certificates over the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2020\/6\/12\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AD%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AA%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B9-%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%81%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%82-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%84%D8%A9-%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%B4%D9%87%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D8%AD%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89\/4821637\">the local press<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emirates will operate four flights between Dubai and Cairo next week to return Egyptians <\/strong><strong>stranded in the UAE,<\/strong> the airline said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/Emirates-announces-four-flights-to-Cairo-to-help-Egyptians-get-home.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a>. The flights will run on 14, 18, 19 and 21 June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sudan has partially reopened its land border for trade with Egypt, after closing in March <\/strong><strong>to stem <\/strong><strong>the spread of covid-19,<\/strong> according to Sudan\u2019s state news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/suna-sd.net\/ar\/single?id=671978\">SUNA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DONATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orascom Construction has funded and built a new emergency reception unit <\/strong>for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Kasr El Eini hospital, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/Orascom-Construction-Donates-a-New-Emergency-Reception-Unit-for-the-Obstetrics-and-Gynecology-Department-at-Kasr-El-Eini-Hospital.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a> on Thursday. The unit is capable of serving at least 100-120 patients per day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Korea has provided Egypt with USD 200k to assist the country\u2019s emergency<\/strong><strong> response to covid-19<\/strong>, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said on the sidelines of a meeting discussing foreign investment with South Korea\u2019s ambassador to Egypt, Yoon Yeocheol, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mof.gov.eg\/Arabic\/MOFNews\/Media\/Pages\/release13-6-2020.aspx\">a ministry statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image' ><a href='https:\/\/somabay.com\/'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/SOMA-ENTERPRISE_1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia could cancel hajj for the first time since the modern kingdom was founded <\/strong><strong>in 1932<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5b2364be-42cb-4973-a10d-52ba62b1b0df\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports. Hajj is due to take place between 29 July and 4 August, but a recent surge in the infection rate has authorities concerned about the health and safety of the estimated 2 mn pilgrims due to travel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/12\/saudi-arabia-considering-canceling-hajj-amid-coronavirus-report-says.html\">CNBC<\/a> has also picked up the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The European Investment Bank green-lit on Thursday a EUR 7.5 bn funding package to <\/strong><strong>support member countries\u2019 responses to covid-19<\/strong> and finance private sector investment, the lender said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/press\/all\/2020-146-eib-approves-eur-7-5-billion-for-covid-19-response-and-investment-in-health-private-sector-clean-transport-education-and-energy\">statement<\/a>. <strong>The bank has allocated EUR 1.9 bn to Egypt and six other non-European countries<\/strong> to \u201cstrengthen the public healthcare response\u201d to the pandemic, EUR 3.2 bn for health, business support and elderly care, and EUR 1.5 bn for investment in clean transport projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beijing in partial lockdown after 45 people tested positive for covid-19 at the capital city\u2019s <\/strong><strong>largest vegetable market: <\/strong>Police have entirely shut down the neighboring areas while some 10k people employed at the market are being tested for the virus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jun\/13\/beijing-china-new-covid-19-cases-linked-to-food-market\">the Guardian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-13\/beijing-shuts-biggest-vegetable-market-after-45-covid-19-cases\">Bloomberg<\/a> report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND THE REST OF THE WORLD- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lebanon is facing ongoing mass protests after last week\u2019s sudden currency<\/strong> <strong>collapse<\/strong> that saw the pound fall 50% against the greenback to LBP 6k on the parallel market in just four days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a1c5f2aa-79a6-48ec-aa8e-6b5d60bda1f7\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports. Protesters blocked roads across the country on Friday as Prime Minister Hassan Diab called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss measures for lowering the exchange rate, which the government aims to bring back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-12\/lebanon-protests-reignite-as-currency-plunges-on-black-market?sref=mmeFTDW1\">LBP 3.2k<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abraaj founder\u2019s alleged misappropriation could be far more extensive than thought: <\/strong>Liquidators overseeing the insolvency of defunct private equity firm Abraaj have estimated that founder and CEO Arif Naqvi misappropriated USD 385 mn from clients, more than 1.5x what US prosecutors had estimated last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-12\/abraaj-ex-ceo-s-theft-totals-385-million-liquidators-claim?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">reports Bloomberg<\/a>.
