The state will then begin easing some measures throughout June, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said in a speech yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It also seems EgyptAir could resume commercial flights early next month<\/strong>, although Cabinet spokesman Nader Saad said only that an official announcement would be made in early June. We have the full story in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you need a reminder that we\u2019re in the midst of a heat wave? <\/strong>Look for daytime highs of 42-43\u00b0C in the capital city, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/ema.gov.eg\/pdf\/4df.pdf\">national weather service (pdf)<\/a>, with a chance of scattered showers this week in Cairo, Sinai and the North Coast, Egyptian Meteorological Authority head Mahmoud Shahin <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2407461.aspx\">told Ahram Gate<\/a>. <strong>The mercury still looks set to fall just in time for the holiday: <\/strong>Look for a daytime high of 32\u00b0C on Saturday (the last day of Ramadan) and 31\u00b0C on Sunday (the first day of Eid).<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, when do we eat? <\/strong>Maghrib prayers are at 6:43pm and you\u2019ll have until 3:19am to finish caffeinating. The ministry also said that another 18 people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 630. We now have a total of 3,742 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 3,172 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Covid infections are on the rise in Africa<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/17\/world\/africa\/coronavirus-kano-nigeria-hotspot.html?action=click&module=RelatedLinks&pgtype=Article\">New York Times<\/a> notes this morning, singling out Nigeria as \u201cjust one of Africa\u2019s alarming hotspots\u201d and adding that Tanzania and Somalia have also been hard hit. The news comes as <strong>some Asian countries are \u201cbattling new clusters of contagion,\u201d <\/strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-latest-news-05-17-2020-11589706594?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> writes. Among them: China, which has quarantined some 8k people in the country\u2019s northeast.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image' ><a href='https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/full-transcript-fed-chair-jerome-powell-60-minutes-interview-economic-recovery-from-coronavirus-pandemic\/'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/5\/Powell-60minutes-2020-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>GLOBAL MACRO-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fed chairman Jay Powell sat down with 60 Minutes\u2019 Scott Pelley for a wide-ranging <\/strong><strong>interview<\/strong> on the central bank\u2019s emergency measures, predictions for the US economy, and what has to be done to ensure we end up with a recovery and not the Great Depression Mk II.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the key takeaways from the interview:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The US economy may not fully recover until a vaccine is found:<\/strong> \u201cCertain parts of the economy will recover much more slowly. Travel, entertainment, things that we do that involve being around lots of other people. So for the economy to fully recover, people will have to be fully confident. And that may have to await the arrival of a vaccine.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>The US economy will see a historic contraction this quarter:<\/strong> The contraction of the US economy in the second quarter \u201ccould easily be in the twenties or thirties.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>And Great Depression-levels of unemployment:<\/strong> \u201c[20-25% unemployment] sounds about right for what the peak may be.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Policymakers must do more:<\/strong> \u201cIt may well be that the Fed has to do more. It may be that Congress has to do more. And the reason we've got to do more is to avoid longer run damage to the economy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>But a note of optimism:<\/strong> \u201cIn the long run, and even in the medium run, you wouldn't want to bet against the American economy. This economy will recover. And that means people will go back to work. Unemployment will get back down. The index recovered from its 23 March bottom because it\u2019s anchored in tech and healthcare companies, but those working in retail, industry and energy are at risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The collapse in oil prices is increasing the likelihood that GCC currencies break the USD <\/strong><strong>peg,<\/strong> which has been in place since the 1970s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1c7263d6-9547-4776-b0df-7f0ab442124f\">the Financial Times reports<\/a>.
