Fajr is coming one minute earlier every day through the end of the Holy Month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/5\/Covid-graph-13-May-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt has now disclosed a total of 10,431 confirmed cases of covid-19<\/strong> after <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dGBApt\">the Health<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dGBApt\">Ministry reported<\/a> 338 new infections yesterday. The ministry also said that another 12 people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 556. We now have a total of 2980 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 2486 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Healthcare workers are feeling the stress<\/strong>, with the Medical Syndicate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ems.org.eg\/our_news\/details\/6728\">calling on authorities<\/a> to repeal \u201cdangerous\u201d new guidelines that instruct health workers not to get tested for the virus unless they show symptoms. The call comes after reports that <strong>as many as 130 medical professionals at Al Azhar-associated hospitals are infected<\/strong>, Al Azhar University Vice President Mahmoud Sedik, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2LD7VSl\">according to Masrawy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately, a university hospital in El Matareya also reported 19 new infections<\/strong> among its employees yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WQvc8w\">Al Shorouk reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Hotels can choose to reopen starting tomorrow <\/strong>at a cap of 25% occupancy that could be raised to 50% in June if things go well. Operators face a laundry list of common sense protocols as a condition of reopening. <strong>Violators could have their licenses pulled and face a two-year closure order, <\/strong>Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafy told \u2018Ala Mas\u2019ouleety\u2019s Ahmed Moussa on Tuesday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5fDE1yRupHY&feature=emb_title\">watch, runtime 6:05<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A \u201ccurfew\u201d could be in place after Eid<\/strong> running from 11pm to 6am (also known as: When Normals should be sleeping, anyway) as part of the government\u2019s package of measures to contain the spread of covid-19, says well-connected MP and former journalist Mostafa Bakry in a piece from Ahram Online\u2019s Gamal Essam El Din that is <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/50\/1201\/369240\/AlAhram-Weekly\/Egypt\/Learning-to-live-with-the-virus.aspx\">very much worth a skim if you\u2019re looking for insight into where parliamentarians\u2019 heads are<\/a> on the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Finance Ministry is using covid-19 as cover to go after businesses selling online <\/strong><strong>without charging and remitting VAT<\/strong>, a report in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2y0crqL\">Al Mal<\/a> suggests. The drive is specific to unlicensed businesses marketing themselves online, but readers should see this in the context of the state\u2019s ongoing (and very sensible) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/10\/16\/online-retailers-now-have-to-charge-and-remit-vat\/\">push to ensure that ecommerce and online ad buys are subject to the same taxes as offline commerce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contractors will be able to apply for help under the central bank\u2019s EGP 100 bn stimulus <\/strong><strong>initiative<\/strong> for select industries to help them survive the fallout from covid-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/05\/14\/1343240\">the CBE said yesterday<\/a>. Companies need to have turnover of at least EGP 50 mn per year to qualify. Meanwhile, the unfortunately named FEDCOC continues to (sensibly) call for the CBE to <strong>expand its <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d3613595-68ee-4209-b114-d886ac1b9b17\">low-interest subsidized loan<\/a><\/strong><strong> initiative to cover the retail and service sectors<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2T2Uq2i\">Masrawy reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, construction at the new capital is moving forward at full steam<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-egypt-new-capital\/egypt-presses-on-with-new-capital-in-the-desert-amid-virus-outbreak-idUSKBN22P24A\">Reuters<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-egypt-new-capital\/egypt-presses-on-with-new-capital-in-the-desert-amid-virus-outbreak-idUSKBN22P24A\">quoted officials as saying<\/a>. Fewer workers are present on site, with work being stretched over two shifts. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/67e65b2d-4738-46d6-852d-324a0730f19f\">last month<\/a> postponed to 2021 the inauguration of all national projects, including the new capital, due to the outbreak. Government employees were due to move in next month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DONATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our friends at GB Auto alongside TVD<\/strong> \u2014 its JV with El Ghalban Auto Market Group \u2014 <strong>have donated 20 <\/strong><strong>pickup trucks<\/strong> to the Health Ministry, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2yRjja8\">GB said yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lafarge Egypt is contributing to repairing 460 ventilators at public hospitals, in <\/strong><strong>addition to covering the expenses of 2k food boxes<\/strong> the Egyptian Food Bank is distributing to day laborers in Qalyubia, <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/5\/Press-Release-Lafarge-Egypt.pdf\">according to a press release (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Al Ahly Sabbour for Real Estate Developments has donated EGP 4.5 mn worth of <\/strong><strong>ventilators and PPE<\/strong>, as well as 12k food boxes worth EGP 3 mn, to covid-19 front line workers, according to a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bsKW6L\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/5\/coronavirus-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The global tourism industry is desperate to reopen<\/strong> before it misses the northern hemisphere\u2019s critical summer season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emirates Airlines is resuming service<\/strong> to Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Chicago, Toronto, Sydney and Melbourne, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emirates.com\/media-centre\/emirates-resumes-passenger-flights-to-9-destinations-including-connections-between-uk-and-australia\/?referringSource=articleShare\">the company said<\/a> in a statement yesterday. The news came as <strong>Dubai reopened public parks and private beaches <\/strong><strong>for hotel guests<\/strong> while limiting gatherings to groups of five, the <a href=\"http:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395302842485\">state news agency WAM reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The EU will try to reopen borders to avoid losing out on the lucrative summer<\/strong> <strong>season, <\/strong>but prospects are mixed over fears for health and safety, an EU commission deputy, Margrethe Vestager, said yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-eu-travel\/eu-calls-for-european-borders-to-reopen-to-save-tourist-season-idUSKBN22O38B\">according to Reuters<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/transport\/news\/eu-transport-tourism-plan-aims-to-protect-summer-vacations\/\">A proposal seen by Euractiv<\/a> would ease travel restrictions in phases to reopen borders with \u201csimilar risk profiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>If this is nudging you to bring back the Eurotrip plans you shelved in March, <\/strong>here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/13\/face-masks-and-swimming-pool-bookings-how-europe-is-reopening-tourism.html\">what<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/13\/face-masks-and-swimming-pool-bookings-how-europe-is-reopening-tourism.html\">you should know<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canada and the US, meanwhile, look set to leave their border closed to all <\/strong><strong>non-essential travel until 21<\/strong> <strong>June,<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-us-border-expected-to-stay-closed-to-non-essential-travel-to\/\">Globe & Mail reports<\/a>, citing unnamed government sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Air traffic won\u2019t return to pre-covid levels until 2023 at the earliest,<\/strong> the International Air Transport Association (IATA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-iata\/no-return-to-pre-crisis-air-traffic-before-2023-iata-idUSL8N2CV56H\">said yesterday<\/a>, suggesting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonstockexchange.com\/exchange\/news\/market-news\/market-news-detail\/TUI\/14537625.html\">8k job cut at LSE-listed global travel operator TUI<\/a> could just be the tip of the iceberg. TUI chief Fritz Joussen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-tui-ceo-holidays\/european-holidays-to-restart-in-july-tourism-to-recover-by-2022-tui-ceo-idUSKBN22P0YZ\">told reporters<\/a> that the company plans to <strong>begin taking bookings for European holidays in July<\/strong> and that the industry might not make a full recovery until 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/3\/JayPowell-1600px.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>GLOBAL MACRO-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The pages of the financial press were adorned with Jay Powell\u2019s face for much of <\/strong><strong>yesterday:<\/strong> In a webcast for the Peterson Institute yesterday the Fed chair had some choice words about where he sees the US economy going and what lawmakers should do to prevent the situation from getting any messier.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prepare for an \u201cextended period\u201d of weak growth:<\/strong> Contradicting the widespread optimism for a rapid economic recovery, Powell warned that immediate growth prospects were dire and it will take \u201csome time\u201d before the economy finds its feet. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed-powell\/feds-powell-says-economy-may-face-extended-period-of-weak-growth-idUSKBN22P1FG?il=0\">Reuters<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The US needs to get its act together and pass new fiscal measures:<\/strong> Congress and the White House need to agree on further fiscal support to prevent an extended recession. \u201cAdditional fiscal support could be costly but worth it if it helps avoid long-term economic damage and leaves us with a stronger recovery,\u201d he said. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/13\/fed-powell-coronavirus-recession\/\">Washington Post<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Negative rates are a no-go:<\/strong> The Fed chair pushed back on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5c729aa7-72ef-48bb-a2dd-c4861be43eef\">growing market speculation<\/a> that the central bank could cut rates below zero if push came to shove. \u201cThe committee\u2019s view on negative rates really has not changed. This is not something we\u2019re looking at,\u201d he said. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/powell-rejects-using-negative-rates-as-a-policy-tool-2020-05-13\">MarketWatch<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>None of this went down too well with the markets: <\/strong>US stocks dipped to a three-week low on Powell\u2019s comments. The S&P 500 closed 2.2% in the red and the Dow lost 1.75%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinese officials are considering pulling out of the trade pact with the US:<\/strong> President Trump has rejected the prospect of reworking the first phase of the US-China trade agreement after Chinese state media reported that officials in Beijing are considering pulling out of the pact and renegotiating terms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-china-trade-trump\/trump-not-interested-in-reopening-u-s-china-trade-deal-after-report-of-beijing-discontent-idUSKBN22N2UY\">Reuters reports<\/a>. Unnamed Chinese trade officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1188028.shtml\">told the Global Times<\/a> that there is growing dissatisfaction over the terms of the agreement in Beijing, with some in the government calling for a complete renegotiation of the pact. The news comes as new figures revealed the two countries are <strong>pulling investments at a startling rate<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/115fc14f-4a8a-45da-8688-c59605a5191a\">the Financial Times notes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>AND THE REST OF THE WORLD- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a fire sale at NMC Health:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s troubled healthcare provider has begun selling off assets as it tries to raise money to repay its creditors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-12\/nmc-health-administrators-are-said-to-kick-off-asset-sales?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. The company is planning to sell its distribution business, its fertility unit, and even its hospital business \u2014 the largest private healthcare provider in the region.
