The IHS Markit Eurozone Manufacturing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/d9c45c2e3a1b4b45a4b68fbc0389385c\">purchasing managers\u2019 index (pdf)<\/a> reached its lowest level in recorded history, dropping to 33.6 as demand and production were hard-hit due to covid-19 lockdowns. Confidence across the eurozone also took a nosedive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who had it the worst?<\/strong> Greece and Spain\u2019s PMI readings were the lowest among the bunch, followed by Italy and France. But all countries included in the composite reading had PMI scores that were either an all-time low, or at the lowest level since the global financial crisis a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asian PMI readings also took a beating.<\/strong> India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/d423027b930740c9932cfd648a5cc2d5\">manufacturing PMI (pdf)<\/a> plunged to 27.4 \u2014 the lowest score since its recordings began in 2008. Fajr is coming one minute earlier every day through the end of the Holy Month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt has now disclosed a total of 6,813 confirmed cases of covid-19<\/strong> after <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YCN1u3\">the Health<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YCN1u3\">Ministry reported<\/a> 348 new infections yesterday. The ministry also said that another seven people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 436. We now have a total of 2,139 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 1,632 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the dead was another physician<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ems.org.eg\/our_news\/details\/6718\">the Medical Syndicate said yesterday<\/a>, bringing to eight the number of medical doctors who have died from the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2SBZL09\">Youm7<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Expect to hear by Thursday that the 9pm-6am curfew will be extended until the end of <\/strong><strong>Ramadan. <\/strong>Cabinet Spokesman Nader Saad told nighttime talkshow queen Lamees El Hadidy last night that the government looks set to leave the curfew in place until the end of the Holy Month (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dwp154BEtYo\">watch, runtime: 22:32<\/a>). The curfew is scheduled to expire on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And don\u2019t expect to hear whether we\u2019ll pass Eid El Fitr under curfew until just before <\/strong><strong>the holiday<\/strong>, Saad warned, saying, \u201cWith the coronavirus, there are no guarantees. No nation can say that the situation is under control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e139e37f-92bf-4292-adcc-b654aaed6886\">Tax relief on corporate income tax payments<\/a><\/strong><strong> was a good first step, but many businesses <\/strong><strong>wants more help from the government.<\/strong> A handful of businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WDtIOT\">polled by Al Mal<\/a> \u2014 including Orascom Construction, Pyramisa Hotels, Cleopatra Hospitals, and Dice Clothing \u2014 want more from policymakers to help see them through the corona storm. At the top of the wish list: Businesses want electricity and water price cuts given to the industrial sector to be extended to other areas of the economy, a six-month real estate tax holiday, and an installment plan for VAT and utility payments <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e139e37f-92bf-4292-adcc-b654aaed6886\">similar to what the Finance Ministry did with income tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>When will the government tap private hospitals to handle covid-19 cases?<\/strong> Renaissance Capital thinks we\u2019re quite some ways away from that milestone, saying in a research note yesterday that state-owned hospitals currently have enough capacity to absorb 42k active cases based on its estimate of a 20% hospitalization rate and suggestion that the state has north of 8.4k ICU beds available. <strong>Private sector hospitals should see 25-35% drops in patient volumes in 2Q <\/strong>and recover gradually in 3Q before \u201creverting to pre-covid levels in 4Q20,\u201d RenCap\u2019s Omar Aboulmagd writes. Pharma players should be the least impacted players in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, MPs <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7e6270ce-7d19-4fee-b65d-de1df7798a6c\">have been lobbying<\/a> the Health Ministry to <strong>allow private labs to provide <\/strong><strong>covid-19 testing<\/strong> to help expand the country\u2019s testing capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Health Ministry has shut down 26 medical facilities in Beni Suef for <\/strong><strong>not complying with covid-19 safety precautions, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.benisuef.gov.eg\/New_Portal\/Details_ThisMonthNews.aspx?id=9015\">according to a statement<\/a>. Sixteen private clinics and 10 labs were closed while eight private hospitals are being inspected by the ministry to ensure their compliance with safety measures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>State wheat importer GASC has lined up USD 100 mn financing agreement for <\/strong><strong>commodity imports <\/strong>from the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation, <a href=\"https:\/\/itfc.africa-newsroom.com\/press\/international-islamic-trade-finance-corporation-extends-us100m-covid19-emergency-financing-for-purchasing-wheat-and-sugar-in-favor-of-egypt?lang=en\">according to an ITFC statement<\/a>. The financing will be used to purchase 240k tonnes of wheat and 100k tonnes of sugar.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Tensions boil over in Kuwait as stranded Egyptian workers demand to come<\/strong> <strong>home:<\/strong> Kuwaiti police dispersed what officials there called a \u201criot\u201d by Egyptian workers who were being held for allegedly violating the kingdom\u2019s residency laws, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuna.net.kw\/ArticleDetails.aspx?id=2891050&language=ar\">Kuwait\u2019s Interior Ministry said yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s Emigration Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2W2kT1V\">moved to reassure<\/a><\/strong><strong> Egyptians working in the Gulf that the<\/strong> <strong>government would organize repatriation flights in the coming days<\/strong> and would prioritize those whose work contracts or residency permits had expired. But the New York Times suggests it has seen US government documents that show ending lockdowns now will \u201cmake matters worse\u201d as the \u201cdaily death toll will reach about 3k on June 1 \u2026 a 70 percent increase from the current number of about 1,750.\u201d New cases will skyrocket to \u201c200k new cases each day by the end of the month, up from about 25k cases a day currently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dubai Expo officially postponed to next year: <\/strong>The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has approved the UAE government\u2019s request to postpone Dubai Expo 2020 until 1 October 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie-paris.org\/site\/en\/news-announcements\/expo-dubai-2020-2\/resolution-for-postponement-of-expo-2020-dubai-surpasses-required-two-thirds-threshold\">according to a BIE statement<\/a>. The expo will run until March 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japan has extended its national state of emergency until the end of the month<\/strong> but has signaled it could lift restrictions if there is a slowdown in infections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-japan\/japans-abe-set-to-extend-state-of-emergency-until-end-may-idUSKBN22G05T\">according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MACRO-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global stocks mixed on US-China tensions, manufacturing collapse, easing lockdown restrictions in New York: <\/strong>It was a mixed picture in the global equity markets yesterday. US stocks joined their European and Asian counterparts in the red for much of the day before rebounding late in the session <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/global-shares-fall-on-u-s-sino-spat-but-wall-street-rebounds-idUSKBN22G003?il=0\">on news that New York would begin to ease its lockdown restrictions<\/a> this week.
