Coronavirus may change work forever<\/a> in the Financial Times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The markets today: <\/strong>US shares started the month of May on the wrong foot, with the Nasdaq, S&P and Dow all shedding more than 2% on Friday after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on China as \u201cpunishment\u201d for the covid-19 pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-stocks\/wall-street-tumbles-as-renewed-tariff-threat-adds-to-uncertainties-idUSKBN22D58W\">according to Reuters<\/a>. Western markets are closed today. The EGX30 closed up 0.1% on Thursday amid heavy trading and is now down 24.4% for the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, when do we eat? <\/strong>Maghrib prayers are at 6:34pm and you\u2019ll have until 3:34am to finish caffeinating. Fajr is coming one minute earlier every day through the end of the Holy Month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt has now disclosed a total of 6,193 confirmed cases of covid-19<\/strong> after <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VYbfxh\">the Health<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VYbfxh\">Ministry reported<\/a> 298 new infections yesterday. The ministry said that another nine people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 415. We now have a total of 1,970 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 1,522 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday saw the largest uptick in new reported cases since we started recording the outbreak<\/strong>, coming in at 358. The jump was \u201cwithin expectations\u201d because people were lax on social distancing precautions in the days leading up to Ramadan, Health Minister Hala Zayed told El Hekaya\u2019s Amr Adib. The minister pointed to Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gstatic.com\/covid19\/mobility\/2020-04-26_EG_Mobility_Report_en.pdf\">latest mobility report (pdf)<\/a>, which showed <strong>a rise in the number of people going to malls and offices as well as using mass transit<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ztbqwhVNTb4\">watch: runtime 27:59<\/a>). We have more on this in this morning\u2019s roundup of Last Night\u2019s Talk Shows, below.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who have died from the virus: <strong>Cairo University Kasr El Ainy Faculty of Medicine<\/strong><strong> Vice Dean Hisham Saket<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1973709\">according to Al Masry Al Youm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traffic Police offices are open for one week starting today <\/strong>from 8am-4pm daily to allow folks to go renew licenses. You\u2019ll be required to wear a face mask if you\u2019re heading in, the Interior Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ffIh3h\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Local Development Ministry has reached an agreement with the World Bank to<\/strong><strong> provide EGP 150 mn to improve healthcare facilities in Upper Egypt<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35nZcfy\">according to a statement<\/a>. The funding is part of a World Bank-sponsored Upper Egypt development program. The proceeds will be used to purchase emergency covid-19 supplies for hospitals specialized in respiratory diseases and fever and quarantine facilities in Qena and Sohag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More repatriation flights bring back hundreds of Egyptians: <\/strong>Repatriation flights brought back 164 Egyptians stranded in Ukraine, another 342 <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VWWfzv\">from Russia<\/a>, and 136 from Ethiopia and Kenya on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ff5p1S\">according to Egypt Today<\/a>. Thursday also saw flights bring back 152 Egyptians from Maldives and Oman. Another flight will bring back an undisclosed number of citizens from Washington today, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bXsKU3\">Al Mal reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy price cuts to factories cost the state EGP 10 bn -Maait: <\/strong>The government\u2019s recent decision to cut natural gas and electricity prices for factories has cost the state\u2019s coffers an estimated EGP 10 bn, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fg3quc\">Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said<\/a> yesterday. The price cuts came as part of a bundle of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1154689d-294f-4d45-95b4-84a76d67466c\">government efforts<\/a> to support businesses through the outbreak, which Maait says are geared towards turning the crisis into a chance to stir private sector growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mass transit companies are lobbying the Public Transport Authority to grant them a<\/strong><strong> three-month holiday on fees and fines<\/strong>, saying they are unable to meet the payments since covid-19 restrictions have driven down revenues by as much as 75%, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35s62Rh\">Al Shorouk reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DONATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CIB has donated EGP 80 mn<\/strong> to an emergency and crisis account set up by the Federation of Egyptian Banks\u00a0to support impacted families and businesses, <strong>USD 2.5 mn<\/strong> to the Tahya Misr fund to help purchase 100 PCR testing machines and kits, and <strong>EGP 1.6 mn<\/strong> to help the families of 10k day laborers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1973470\">Al Masry Al Youm reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PepsiCo has donated 25k medical masks to the Health Ministry and Tahya Misr<\/strong><strong> fund,<\/strong> CEO Mohamed Shelbaya <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/04\/30\/1330388\">tells the local press<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Egyptian Exporters Association has <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1973467\">donated<\/a><\/strong><strong>EGP 1 mn<\/strong> to the General Authority For Supply Commodities to purchase medical supplies for healthcare workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(<em>Correction: 3\/5\/2020- A previous version of this entry incorrectly said that CIB donated EGP 80 mn to the Egyptian Food Bank)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia could be taking strict and \u201cpainful\u201d measures<\/strong> including cutting government spending \u201cdeeply\u201d to protect its economy from the effects of the pandemic and the global oil market crash, the Saudi finance minister told Al Arabiya yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fGLObxFZtAU\">watch, runtime: 20:32<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>News on the search for a vaccine<\/strong> \u2014 or at least a treatment \u2014 for covid-19:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The notion that a vaccine could be widely available in 12-18 months is a \u201crosy\u201d <\/strong><strong>prediction<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/04\/30\/opinion\/coronavirus-covid-vaccine.html\">New York Times notes<\/a> in a piece that lets you play with sliders representing the parameters \u2014 from trials to factory-building \u2014 that will help determine how fast a vaccine hits the market. One of the biggest obstacles: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/29\/opinion\/coronavirus-vaccine.html\">Making sure every country has access<\/a> to whichever of the 89 potential vaccines (and counting) proves effective (if any).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is optimistic about a treatment <\/strong>that saw 73 moderately or severely ill patients make full recoveries after they inhaled a mist of their own extracted, purified stem cells, a senior government official <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hend_mana\/status\/1256194232383156225\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Those Korean re-infections? They were false positives<\/strong>, it seems \u2014 patients who tested positive again due to the release of fragments of viral RNA during the shedding of damaged lung tissue, not reinfection or a reactivation of the virus that causes covid-19, the <a href=\"http:\/\/m.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20200429000724\">Korea Herald<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Texas and Georgia were the first of around a dozen US states that decided to <\/strong><strong>reopen on Friday<\/strong>, despite warnings from public health experts that prematurely lifting restrictions could cause a spike in cases and deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/01\/us\/coronavirus-updates.html\">according to the New York Times<\/a>. Around half of the country will have begun taking steps towards reopening this week. Governors of other states, including New York and Washington, have signaled that lockdown measures will remain in place for at least the rest of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Over on our side of the pond, <strong>France is getting ready to ease lockdown measures on 11<\/strong><strong> May<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5831208\/western-europe-russia-coronavirus-measures\/\">along with the rest of Europe<\/a>, but will extend the state of health emergency to 24 July as it closed in on the 25k case milestone, French Health Minister Olivier V\u00e9ran said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200502-france-extends-covid-19-health-emergency-until-july-24\">according to AFP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said he tested positive for the virus<\/strong>, Russian news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1152169\">TASS reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil majors ExxonMobil and Chevron painted a rather gloomy picture for the year <\/strong><strong>ahead for the oil industry<\/strong> in their 1Q2020 earnings released over the weekend. Exxon <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\/-\/media\/Global\/Files\/investor-relations\/quarterly-earnings\/earnings-announcements\/2020-earnings-announcements\/1q-earnings-release.pdf\">reported (pdf)<\/a> a USD 610 mn loss during the first quarter of the year, and decided to slash its planned capex spending by nearly a third this year as the pandemic has \u201csignificantly impacted near-term demand.\u201d Chevron, meanwhile, saw its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevron.com\/stories\/chevron-announces-first-quarter-2020-results\">1Q earnings<\/a> jump 39% y-o-y to USD 3.6 bn, but expects its profits throughout the rest of the year to take a hit as the oil slump takes its toll. The company has also slashed its capex plans by an additional USD 2 bn after announcing a USD 4 bn reduction a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Berkshire Hathaway is licking its wounds after first quarter stock market sell off: <\/strong>Warren Buffet\u2019s Berkshire Hathaway recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berkshirehathaway.com\/news\/may0220.pdf\">losses of nearly USD 50 bn (pdf)<\/a> in the first quarter as the value of its portfolio took a heavy beating from the recent covid-19 sell-off. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b7184d64-4cda-4061-ac39-5ded1696fb84\">The Financial Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-berkshire-results\/buffetts-berkshire-posts-nearly-50-billion-loss-as-coronavirus-causes-pain-idUSKBN22E0GD\">Reuters<\/a> have more. And before you freak out at the notion of a USD 50 bn loss, it ain\u2019t yet a \u201creal\u201d loss. The Oracle of Omaha\u2019s outfit notes that thanks to a change in accounting rules in 2018, \u201cwe are required to include the changes in unrealized gains \/ losses of our equity security investments as a component of investment gains \/ losses in our earnings statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND THE REST OF THE WORLD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim Jong-Un finally re-emerges: <\/strong>North Korean state media released photographs of leader Kim Jong-Un on Saturday inaugurating a fertilizer plant after a nearly-three-week disappearance from public life led to speculation about his health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-north-korea-leader\/after-rumours-about-health-n-korea-state-media-report-kim-jong-un-appearance-idUSKBN22D6DD?il=0\">according to Reuters<\/a>.
