The committee left rates unchanged at its last meeting on 2 April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not that most of us will feel it, but Saturday is a national holiday <\/strong>for both private- and public-sector employees in observance of Labour Day, which this year falls on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2KG1E7T\">according to a cabinet statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The markets today: <\/strong>Asian markets are comfortably in the green this morning at the opening bell, while futures point to similar starts to the day in Europe and the United States later today. The benchmark EGX30 was up 1.3% yesterday in heavy trading, leaving the exchange down 24.5% since the start of the cursed year that is 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, when do we eat? <\/strong>Maghrib prayers are at 6:32pm and you\u2019ll have until 3:37am to finish caffeinating. Fajr is coming one minute earlier every day through the end of the Holy Month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt has now disclosed a total of 5,268 confirmed cases of covid-19<\/strong> after <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35ehT5k\">the Health<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35ehT5k\">Ministry reported<\/a> 226 new infections yesterday. The ministry also said that another 21 people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 380. We now have a total of 1,712 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 1,335 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new IMF loans Egypt is seeking won\u2019t have the same reform strings attached as our <\/strong><strong>last facility<\/strong>, Prime Minister Moustafa El Madbouly said yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yeet17\">according to a cabinet statement<\/a>. Madbouly stressed that the one-year rapid financing instrument and a separate stand-by arrangement for which the government is currently in talks will not drive inflation up or any carry other downsides for the average citizen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Medical Syndicate is raising flags about over-reliance on what it called \u201cvery low <\/strong><strong>accuracy\u201d covid-19 rapid testing kits<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2zAQ6QO\">according to a statement.<\/a> The syndicate noted that the World Health Organization recommends the use of PCR as the most accurate tool at hand to diagnose the virus. Shaarawy did not say when the agreement would be signed, or the value of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s Premier League season could get back on track as early as mid-July<\/strong> under a proposal the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) sent to the Sports Ministry, EFA Vice President Gamal Mohamed Ali said on ONTime Sports (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Es1ncQ3mtv8\">watch, runtime: 3:57<\/a>). The EFA is now waiting for the ministry\u2019s decision on the proposal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DONATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6th of October University donated EGP 10 mn<\/strong> to the government, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aPJH12\">according to a cabinet<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aPJH12\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real estate developer Castle Development donated EGP 1 mn<\/strong>, including 500k to support day laborers and EGP 500k to the Tahya Misr fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35mBYGL\">according to a cabinet statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>The US\u2019 longest growth run on record just screeched to a halt<\/strong>, with real GDP contracting by a 4.8% annualized rate in the first quarter of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2020\/04\/today-commerces-bureau-economic-analysis-released-advance-estimate-gdp\">the Commerce Department said<\/a>. Consumer spending, the biggest component of the economy\u2019s broadest gauge, was dragged down 7.6% during the quarter thanks to shuttered malls, bars, and restaurants. \u201cToday\u2019s GDP numbers are weak, but in line with expectations as a result of the COVID-19-driven disruptions,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2020\/04\/statement-us-secretary-commerce-wilbur-ross-q1-2020-gdp-advance\">US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA- The worst is yet to come for the US economy. <\/strong>Let\u2019s keep this brief, shall we? The US economy contracted in 1Q2020 at a faster rate than at the peak of the global financial crisis \u2014 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/29\/business\/economy\/us-gdp.html\">worst recession \u201cin our lifetime\u201d is still to come<\/a>, pundits suggest. Enter US Federal Reserve boss Jay Powell, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa-fed\/us-economy-faces-hard-slog-back-from-pandemic-fed-chief-says-idUSKCN22B0EA\">Reuters<\/a> said \u201cdashed lingering hopes for a fast rebound from the coronavirus pandemic, saying the U.S. economy could feel the weight of consumer fear and social distancing for a year or more in a prolonged climb from a deepening hole.\u201d Powell was speaking at the end of a two-day Fed meeting at which its open markets committee left interest rates on hold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Powell warned of lasting \u201cmedium-term\u201d economic fallout<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ab0ef980-9788-4880-936b-a3f3b2c5bd6e\">Financial Times<\/a> added. <\/p>\n<p><strong>How bad could it get? <\/strong>Economists polled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/first-quarter-gdp-us-growth-coronavirus-11588123665?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> agree we are staring down the barrel of a recession of \u201cunprecedented\u201d proportions. The prognosticators at IHS Janes expect the US economy to contract \u201cat a 37% annual rate from April to June, which would represent the biggest drop since quarterly records began in 1947.\u201d The chief economist at Credit Suisse suggests \u201cwe are heading for <strong>the largest contraction in GDP since the Great Depression<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Patients given remdisivir recovered 31% faster than those given a placebo<\/strong>, prompting Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious diseases official, to declare that \u201cthis will be the standard of care.\u201d Fauci likened the results of clinical trials to a watershed moment in 1986 when \u201cwhen we were struggling for [meds] for HIV and we had nothing.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-gilead-remdesivir\/data-on-gilead-drug-raises-hopes-in-pandemic-fight-fauci-calls-it-highly-significant-idUSKBN22B1T9\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-29\/gilead-remdesivir-trial-for-covid-19-has-met-primary-endpoint\">Bloomberg<\/a> have the story and you can read drugmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilead.com\/news-and-press\/press-room\/press-releases\/2020\/4\/gilead-announces-results-from-phase-3-trial-of-investigational-antiviral-remdesivir-in-patients-with-severe-covid-19\">Gilead\u2019s statement here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Tech won earnings season this quarter<\/strong>, handily kicking the [redacted] of companies that traffic in real-world goods and services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Losers in yesterday\u2019s tourney: <\/strong>Old-economy giants including <strong>PepsiCo<\/strong>, <strong>Coca Cola<\/strong>, and <strong>Starbucks<\/strong> have reported their first quarterly drop in same-store sales in almost 11 years \u2014 and worse is probably still to come in 2Q. <strong>BP<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/investors\/results-and-reporting\/quarterly-results-and-webcast.html\">first quarter profits<\/a> were down by 67% as the virus slashed oil demand globally, while carmaker <strong>Ford<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/s23.q4cdn.com\/799033206\/files\/doc_financials\/2020\/q1\/Ford-1Q2020-Earnings-Release.pdf\">reported a net loss<\/a> of USD 2 bn in the first quarter as most operations were grounded to a halt by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The winners:<\/strong> <strong>Facebook<\/strong>\u2019s net income more than doubled to USD 4.9 bn in 1Q2020. El Face <a href=\"https:\/\/s21.q4cdn.com\/399680738\/files\/doc_news\/Facebook-Reports-First-Quarter-2020-Results-2020.pdf\">saw a decline in demand<\/a> for advertising but witnessed increased engagement as people in isolation rely heavier on its products to connect with others. <strong>Microsoft<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/Investor\/earnings\/FY-2020-Q3\/press-release-webcast\">saw its net profits rise<\/a> 22% to USD 10.8 bn, mainly driven by higher demand on its cloud services. And unexpectedly, next-gen carmaker <strong>Tesla <\/strong>turned in a net profit of USD 16 mn in the first quarter with <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/static-files\/c1723af4-ffda-4881-ae12-b6f3c972b795\">a stable outlook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>High-rollers are waiting for equities to fall another 5-20% before they re-enter the market<\/strong>, according to UBS research cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-29\/world-s-richest-are-waiting-for-new-dip-in-stocks-before-buying?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Less than one quarter of the ultra-wealthy folks polled think it\u2019s time to buy back into equities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the US discussing how to \u201cexit\u201d lockdown, the usual suspects think demand for oil<\/strong><strong> will recover<\/strong>, driving WTI June contracts to USD 16 \/ bbl yesterday from USD 12 \/ bbl, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d40c73e1-0f65-4e1b-86c4-e9f197778823\">the Financial Times<\/a> notes. Still: Expect volatility in the coming period, folks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority has delayed the sale of USD 2 bn-worth of<\/strong> <strong>private-equity fund stakes<\/strong> from its portfolio after failing to reach consensus on the sale value with investors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-29\/abu-dhabi-said-to-shelve-sale-of-2-billion-private-equity-book?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>. The world\u2019s third largest sovereign wealth fund will give the transaction another shot in 2H2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GCC fiscal support insufficient, says Oxford Economics:<\/strong> Gulf countries\u2019 fiscal response to the economic fallout from the pandemic falls short of those from comparable economies in Europe and Asia, with policies \u201ctoo small and narrow,\u201d say experts at Oxford Economics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-29\/gulf-fiscal-response-to-crisis-faulted-as-too-small-and-narrow\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BEYOND COVID-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NMC founder BR Shetty claims he was victim of fraud by other execs: <\/strong>The founder of London-listed Emirati healthcare company NMC, Bavaguthu Raghuram Shetty, claims a preliminary investigation into the company found that he was a victim of \u201cserious fraud and wrongdoing\u201d by other executives, according to a statement picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-29\/nmc-finablr-founder-shetty-says-his-probe-finds-serious-fraud?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/58d582c8-4d30-4f52-b869-ce2ab8081a11\">the Financial Times<\/a>. Fraudulent accounts, powers of attorney, loans, personal guarantees, and companies were all used or created under Shetty\u2019s name to facilitate fraud, the Indian entrepreneur alleges. The company has revealed more than USD 4 bn of previously undisclosed debt and claimed to have found evidence of fraud after US short seller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muddywatersresearch.com\/research\/nmc\/mw-is-short-nmc\/\">Muddy Waters<\/a> questioned its finances last December. The company was forced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/aad1197a-091b-4858-8b2e-f2b4189ed56f\">into administration<\/a> earlier this month by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, one of its major lenders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shetty also faces accusations of financial wrongdoing on his watch at high-profile <\/strong><strong>fintech startup Finablr<\/strong>, which last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-finablr\/update-2-payments-group-finablr-slides-56-on-news-of-financial-investigation-idUSL4N2B52KQ\">announced it was investigating charges of impropriety<\/a> and lined up bankruptcy advisors.
