The curfew previously began at 8pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shopping malls and retail outlets are now allowed to open on weekends<\/strong>, but are required to close their doors by 5pm, while restaurant customers will now be allowed to place takeaway orders in-store, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2zpeViA\">said on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also operating again (albeit with limitations) as of today:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Real estate registry offices will reopen for a limited number of unspecified services;<\/li>\n<li>Traffic departments will be allowed to resume the issuance of car licenses;<\/li>\n<li>Family courts will also be allowed to resume inheritance sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Most other citizen services remain closed for the holy month. <\/strong>This includes passport services for citizens and work and residence permits for foreign residents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You will be required to wear a face mask<\/strong> if you do decide to venture to a traffic department, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aJ50la\">Interior Ministry said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resumption of domestic travel could be announced within a couple of weeks: <\/strong>The government is currently assessing how to resume domestic tourism, including air travel, and is expected to make a decision on the matter within the first half of Ramadan, cabinet spokesman Nader Saad said on Sada Al-Balad\u2019s \u2018Ala Mas\u2019ouleety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YEKBEHMHnQo\">(watch, runtime: 22:59)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The return of inbound and outbound passenger flights appears to be further afield<\/strong>, since this decision would depend on international tourism as a whole, Saad said. Cargo flights continue in the meantime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schools also remain closed <\/strong>and the government will make an announcement in the second half of Ramadan on the scheduling of final examinations for schools and universities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EGX trading hours<\/strong><strong> remain unchanged through Ramad<\/strong><strong>an:<\/strong> Trading for the EGX and Nilex will continue to run covid-shortened hours of 10am to 1:30pm each day, <a href=\"https:\/\/egx.com.eg\/en\/NewsDetails.aspx?NewsID=197108\">according to an EGX statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, when do we eat? <\/strong>Maghreb is at 6:29pm today, and you\u2019ll need to have consumed your final cup of coffee no later than 3:42am \u2014 fajr is coming one minute earlier every day through the end of the Holy Month.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Ramadan aside, here\u2019s what\u2019s making our brains spin at the start of the workweek:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Pundits think we still haven\u2019t seen the bottom of the stock market<\/strong>, leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10d24f35-dee9-4991-a7bd-51be9097a100\">Financial<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10d24f35-dee9-4991-a7bd-51be9097a100\">Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-25\/icahn-says-stocks-are-overvalued-virus-may-cause-downdrafts?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">activist investor Carl Icahn<\/a> on the same page. \u201cThe divergence between the flying stock market and the dying economy is so extreme it is leaving many analysts scrambling for explanations,\u201d the salmon-colored paper notes, suggesting <strong>there\u2019s little reason for global shares having \u201cerased half the stock market\u2019s fall since late February<\/strong>\u201d in what some had originally said was a bear-market rally. Icahn, meanwhile, suggests shares are \u201covervalued\u201d and that he\u2019s preparing for \u201csome big downdrafts\u201d yet to come in markets. In the meantime, he\u2019s \u201c<strong>hoarding cash, shorting commercial real estate and preparing for the coronavirus to wreak more havoc<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The WHO is warning against so-called immunity passports<\/strong> that would allow people who show antibodies to the novel coronavirus to \u201ctravel or to return to work assuming that they are protected against re-infection. There is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection,\u201d the international body said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/commentaries\/detail\/immunity-passports-in-the-context-of-covid-19\">scientific<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/commentaries\/detail\/immunity-passports-in-the-context-of-covid-19\">brief<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are we overlooking lessons from the \u201cforgotten pandemic\u201d of the 1960s when <\/strong><strong>policymakers simply \u2026 let everyone get infected?<\/strong> Maybe. But even then, experts aren\u2019t on the same page about what those lessons may be, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/forgotten-pandemic-offers-contrast-to-todays-coronavirus-lockdowns-11587720625\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt now has 4,319 confirmed cases of covid-19<\/strong> after <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eQgVAC\">the Health Ministry reported<\/a> 227 new infections yesterday. The ministry also said that another 13 people had died from the virus, taking the death toll to 307. We now have a total of 1,450 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after isolation or hospitalization, of whom 1,114 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Egyptian doctor died at a quarantine hospital in Aswan on Friday<\/strong>, becoming the country\u2019s fourth healthcare worker to die from covid-19, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VEUt6e\">Medical Syndicate statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attempts to block covid burials are now punishable by law:<\/strong> The House of Representatives passed amendments to the Infectious Diseases Act that would make attempts to block the burial of covid-19 victims punishable by imprisonment and a fine of EGP 5k-10k, <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2398971.aspx\">according to Ahram Gate<\/a>. The amendments also grant the health minister the authority to require individuals to wear personal protective equipment if deemed necessary, and impose a fine of EGP 300-5k on violators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Red Sea governor has allowed tourist cruises and boats to resume operations <\/strong>as long as they take the \u201cnecessary precautions,\u201d including frequent sanitization, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/357PfTi\">according to MENA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hundreds more repatriated from Netherlands, MENA:<\/strong> More than 360 Egyptians arrived in Marsa Alam International Airport on three flights from the Netherlands, Bahrain, and Morocco on Thursday evening, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptindependent.com\/egypts-marsa-alam-airport-receives-364-stranded-egyptians\/\">Al Masry Al Youm reports<\/a>. All returnees are in quarantine for a 14-day period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More flights coming:<\/strong> Air Cairo sent a flight to Indonesia yesterday, and EgyptAir will run two flights to the US in early May to bring home citizens, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/367963\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypt-operates-three-repatriation-flights-to-bring.aspx\">MENA reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Private carrier Nile Air is pitching the Sovereign Fund of Egypt and a number of banks to <\/strong><strong>buy stakes<\/strong> in the company to shield it from going under, Managing Director Yousry Abdel Wahab <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/04\/25\/1324593\">told the local press<\/a>. The National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr have reportedly been in talks with a handful of private airlines over zero-interest loans, as they appear to refuse the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7556d5f4-f4be-40a0-b383-00d317400ee5\">soft loans offered by the Central Bank of Egypt<\/a> since the entire sector is at a standstill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Egyptian Football Association is getting USD 500k in relief from Fifa <\/strong>as national associations struggle to remain afloat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/who-we-are\/news\/fifa-starts-immediate-financial-support-to-member-associations-in-response-to-co\">Fifa said in a statement<\/a>. The football body has set up a USD 150 mn fund to support 211 partner football associations globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DON<\/strong><strong>ATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Telecom Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat will provide quarantine hospitals with 12 ventilators <\/strong><strong>and medical and protective equipment<\/strong> for 200 healthcare workers in a joint initiative, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aBNOxP\">according to a CIT Ministry statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telecom Egypt is paying for 1 mn online medical consultations for Egyptians<\/strong> in collaboration with digital healthcare platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altibbi.com\/\">Altibbi<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VBCMEr\">Al Mal<\/a>. Patients can use the Altibbi website or app to communicate with a doctor, and a hotline (16445) has been set up for people unable to use the internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Insurance Federation of Egypt has donated EGP 10 mn<\/strong> to the Tahya Misr Fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1972022\">according to Al Masry Al Youm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Blom Bank donated EGP 10 mn<\/strong> under the Federation of Egyptian Banks\u2019 initiative to support families of workers who were affected by the covid-19 pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Y4P89N\">according to Al Mal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The WHO has launched a \u201clandmark collaboration\u201d<\/strong> <strong>to speed development of effective<\/strong> <strong>medication, tests and vaccines, and ensure accessibility<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-who\/world-leaders-launch-plan-to-speed-covid-19-drugs-vaccine-u-s-stays-away-idUSKCN2261M7\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The leaders of France, Germany, South Africa, and countries throughout Asia, the Middle East and the Americas participated in a virtual meeting held on Friday, but the US, China, India and Russia were notably absent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany has given the green-light to clinical trials of a corona vaccine <\/strong>in human beings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-to-start-first-coronavirus-vaccine-trial\/a-53211375\">DW reports<\/a>. Scientists in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-52394485\">did the same last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Red states in the US begin to relax lockdown: <\/strong>Several Republican states in the south announced plans to ease lockdown restrictions in defiance of advice issued by medical experts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa\/as-u-s-coronavirus-death-toll-tops-51000-handful-of-states-move-toward-reopening-idUSKCN22622M\">Reuters reports<\/a>. Gyms, beauty salons and some workplaces reopened in Georgia and Oklahoma on Friday, following Florida and South Carolina, which both moved last week to reopen parts of their economies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Canadian provinces lightly hit by the virus have announced how they will phase-in <\/strong>the reopening of their economies. New Brunswick is now permitting two-household gatherings and limited carpooling, but suggested businesses, restaurants, and offices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/covid-19-recovery-plan-new-brunswick-blaine-higgs-1.5543682\">have another 2-4 weeks to go<\/a>. Saskatchewan will start <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6858118\/saskatchewan-reopening-coronavirus-scott-moe\/\">reopening in five phases<\/a> starting on 4 May.<\/p>\n<p><b>Saudi Arabia is partially lifting today its curfew across the country, with the exception of Mecca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which remains under a 24-hour curfew, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/viewfullstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2078975#2078975\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Saudi Press Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remittances \u2014 particularly transfers from workers in the oil-exporting GCC countries \u2014 are a key source of foreign currency for Egypt, but are likely to witness downward pressure this year as companies come under pressure from the slump in oil prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US earnings season picking up steam: <\/strong>Wall Street heavyweights Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, as well as energy giants ExxonMobil and Chevron, are set to report their quarterly earnings this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-companies-cash\/cash-is-king-as-u-s-quarterly-reporting-season-gains-steam-idUSKCN22632X\">reports Reuters<\/a>.
