Showers are expected to continue through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY #1: Nearly half Egypt\u2019s covid-19 cases have recovered:<\/strong> Twenty-six of Egypt\u2019s 59 confirmed covid-19 cases appear to have recovered, turning out negative tests after receiving medical care, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/38JV4a5\">the Health Ministry announced yesterday<\/a>. Meanwhile, 48 foreign tourists held in quarantine from a Nile cruise boat in Luxor were released and travelled back to their countries yesterday after testing negative for the virus, while another 35 have been cleared for travel today, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ICkw6M\">it added<\/a>. <strong>Egypt reported no new cases yesterday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY #2:<\/strong> <strong>There was actually some green on trading screens<\/strong> <strong>yesterday.<\/strong> The EGX30 is back out of bear territory after the index finished yesterday\u2019s session up 2%. Trading was moderately heavy at EGP 774 mn (30% above the trailing 90-day average) as investors seemed to buy the dip after a torrid sell-off on on Monday that saw <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d0eb154b-6857-4b40-bd49-b61afd18b9ac\">stocks plunge more than 7%<\/a>. Index heavyweight CIB closed more than 3% in the green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t expect a return to normalcy just yet:<\/strong> Asian stocks were mixed and US equity futures were all at least 2% in the red at the time of dispatch, signalling another turbulent day on Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sporting events on hold: <\/strong>The Sports Ministry is putting on hold all sports events and \u201cyouth gatherings\u201d after the government suspended large public gatherings <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/99efdcae-1f1d-4c63-841d-96a7354d80a3\">earlier this week<\/a> to curb the growing number of infections, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TEyQ4Y\">the cabinet announced yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AmCham has postponed its monthly luncheon due to take place this Thursday<\/strong> as a precautionary measure against the covid-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schools have not been cancelled for the rest of the year<\/strong>, the Education Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/Article\/1\/82501\/Education-Min-confirms-continuance-of-academic-year-amid-fears-of\">said<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/Article\/1\/82501\/Education-Min-confirms-continuance-of-academic-year-amid-fears-of\">yesterday<\/a>, and if classes were to be suspended, students will have to finish their coursework from home. A cabinet spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-koBsBYXfMg&t=186s\">hit the airwaves last night<\/a> to underscore that while the government is closely monitoring the situation, suggestions classes were being cancelled are just rumours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The effects of covid-19 on Egypt\u2019s tourism industry is leading the conversation in the<\/strong> <strong>foreign press this morning:<\/strong> Pieces in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/09\/world\/middleeast\/egypt-coronavirus-tourism.html\">New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/business\/253979-egypt-tourism-sector-braces-novel-coronavirus-impact\">AFP<\/a> ask what we can expect the impact on Egypt\u2019s tourism industry to be and whether enough is being done to contain the health risk in the face of promoting Egypt as a tourist destination. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/fcbe7bc478342c4fa2937ffb5cc0234c\">the Associated Press<\/a> talks to a Florida family who were among those quarantined on the Nile cruise ship in Luxor over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism companies told to monitor symptoms: <\/strong>The Egyptian Travel Agents Association is also taking measures of its own and has required its members to report tourists that show any symptoms of rising fever, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/03\/10\/1305952\">the local press reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In miscellaneous Egypt-related covid-19 news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jordan has closed its seaports <\/strong>to ships coming from Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL8N2B36JL\">Reuters reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oman\u2019s Health Ministry is requiring travellers returning from Egypt to be<\/strong><strong> quarantined for <\/strong><strong>two weeks<\/strong>, a decision that started on Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofoman.com\/article\/2884549\/Oman\/Health\/Omans-health-ministry-issues-statement-on-travellers-from-Egypt\">according to the Times of Oman<\/a>. Travellers that returned from Egypt after 22 February must now quarantine themselves at home, wear a mask if they visit any health facility, and avoid using public transport.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Lebanon covid-19 death has Egypt tie: <\/strong>A Lebanese man who returned from Egypt a week ago yesterday became the country\u2019s first person to die from covid-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-lebanon\/lebanon-records-first-death-from-coronavirus-local-media-idUSKBN20X16R\">Reuters reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EgyptAir flights brought Egyptians back from Saudi Arabia yesterday<\/strong> after the kingdom <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/99efdcae-1f1d-4c63-841d-96a7354d80a3\">decided on Sunday to suspend travel<\/a> between the countries, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3aH6Hjl\">according to a cabinet statement<\/a>. An Egyptian citizen transiting through Saudi Arabia on his way back from New York to Cairo has tested positive for covid-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/viewfullstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2045336#2045336\">Saudi state media reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>The one thing we\u2019re reading on covid-19 this morning: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-09\/top-virus-doctor-says-high-blood-pressure-is-major-death-risk?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Top coronavirus doctor in Wuhan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-09\/top-virus-doctor-says-high-blood-pressure-is-major-death-risk?sref=mmeFTDW1\">says high blood pressure is major death risk<\/a> in Bloomberg, which is full of sensible advice and findings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/Google-covid-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Google is aggressively cleaning up coronavirus misinformation on its platforms:<\/strong> Google has altered what appears when users search something related to the virus, now showing an \u201cSOS Alert,\u201d with news from mainstream publications followed by information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-10\/dr-google-scrubs-coronavirus-misinformation-on-search-youtube?srnd=technology-vp\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. YouTube has also had a covid-19 facelift with videos claiming to prevent the virus and ads discussing the virus both banned, while instead governments and NGOs have been given free ad space on the video service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/Hauser-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Investors still demanding higher yields at CBE bond auction:<\/strong> The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) sold less than a third of its bond offering in yesterday\u2019s auction amid pressure from investors for higher yields. Official data shows that investors bought EGP 2.28 bn worth of five-year and 10-year treasury bonds out of the EGP 7.5 bn on offer. Demand for the 10-year tranche was particularly poor, with investors snapping up just EGP 77 mn of the EGP 3.5 bn offering after the central bank accepted yield of 14.033%, almost 60 bps beneath the rate targeted by investors. The EGP 4 bn five-year tranche was undersubscribed by almost half, with the CBE selling EGP 2.2 bn at a 14.458% yield, against the 14.591% sought by investors.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>US stocks bounce back after madness of \u2018Black Monday\u2019:<\/strong> US stocks staged a recovery yesterday after suffering the worst sell-off since the 2008 financial crash. All three major indices staged a late rally on news that President Trump is considering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f22ef1c6-62f5-11ea-b3f3-fe4680ea68b5\">multi-bn payroll tax cut<\/a> in response to covid-19 and as traders regained their buy-the-dip mentality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>European equities didn\u2019t fare as well,<\/strong> with all indices finishing in the red, albeit to a far lesser extent than they did on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil prices staged a slight recovery yesterday following Monday\u2019s Saddam levels of carnage:<\/strong> US crude rose 10.4% to USD 34.36\/bbl and Brent crude was up 8.3% to USD 37.22\/bbl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This probably isn\u2019t going to become a trend:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia doubled down on its mission to upend the oil markets yesterday, signalling that it is quite happy to shred its budget targets if it means one-upping Russia and the US in the oil trade. Saudi Aramco announced that it would increase production to a record 12.3 mn bbl\/d, placing further pressure on a market already suffering a demand slump and teetering on the news that Riyadh would slash prices to lows not seen in 20 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-10\/saudi-arabia-escalates-price-war-with-massive-hike-to-oil-supply?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg has more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia signalled a comparatively concessionary tone,<\/strong> reportedly refusing to rule out further OPEC talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/10\/oil-prices-russia-hints-at-further-talks-with-saudi-arabia-and-opec.html\">according to CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Biden takes a huge step towards the Democratic nomination:<\/strong> Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden looks increasingly likely to claim the Democratic nomination after winning big in yesterday\u2019s round of primaries. The former vice president as expected won the southern states of Missouri and Mississippi but crucially also took Michigan, a state that rival candidate Bernie Sanders was pinning his hopes on winning.
