<\/a> Egypt, Ethiopia continue war of words over GERD:<\/strong> Egypt has lashed out at a statement issued by Ethiopia\u2019s Foreign Ministry that criticized the Arab League for backing Cairo in the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a resolution last week<\/a>, Arab foreign ministers rejected any unilateral moves taken by Ethiopia, calling Egypt\u2019s access to water \u201can integral part of the Arab national security,\u201d a stance that was denounced by the Ethiopia, which expressed \u201cdismay\u201d<\/a> at what it described as the Arab League\u2019s \u201cblind support\u201d for Egypt\u2019s \u201chegemonic posturing.\u201d In response, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry yesterday accused Ethiopia<\/a> of levelling an \u201cunacceptable insult\u201d against the league\u2019s member states and said that its decision to start unilaterally filling the dam \u201cproves beyond doubt Ethiopia\u2019s bad faith and lack of political will to reach a just and balanced agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sudan is not on board with the Arab League declaration:<\/strong> Sudanese officials expressed \u201creservations\u201d that the resolution does not serve its interests and might lead to an Arab-Ethiopian confrontation, sources told state-run news agency MENA, according to Ahram Online<\/a>. Two days after the resolution, Ittihadiya announced<\/a> that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had exchanged words with the head of Sudan\u2019s governing council Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, but gave away little in its statement.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia has recalled its ambassadors from Egypt and Sudan<\/strong> but insisted that move was unrelated to the GERD dispute, it said in a statement picked up by Al Masry Al You<\/a>m<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tensions have risen over Ethiopia\u2019s megaproject in recent days<\/strong> after Ethiopia skipped talks<\/a> in Washington at the end of last month, saying that it needed more time to consider the agreement. Egypt, which initialled the accord in Ethiopia\u2019s absence, expressed \u201cdeep dissatisfaction and rejection\u201d with Addis Ababa\u2019s position on the talks after the meeting, and warned that it would use \u201call available means\u201d to defend its interests if the talks fell through.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
