Quick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCZone investment conference postponed:<\/strong> The Suez Canal Economic Zone has postponed the investment conference due to take place later this month due to the covid-19 outbreak, it <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3azem34\">said in a statement yesterday<\/a>. The event \u2014 scheduled for 21-22 March \u2014 looked to promote the zone as an investment destination for foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have chapter and verse on the virus<\/strong>\u2019 slow-burn spread in Egypt in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Globally, we breached 100k cases at the weekend, with 3.4k people now having died as a result of c<\/strong><strong>ovid-19.<\/strong> The tally on coronavirus cases continues ticking as the virus marked its imprint on at least 90 countries, seven of which have just seen their first cases reported on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus\/coronavirus-infects-100000-plus-worldwide-21-cases-found-on-ship-off-san-francisco-idUSKBN20T1G4\">Reuters reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Containment of the epidemic should be made every country\u2019s top priority<\/strong>, the World Health Organization warned, singling out Iran\u2019s efforts (aka concealment) as an example of exactly what not to do. <strong>But the WHO is still holding back from officially declaring a pandemic:<\/strong> \u201cUnless we\u2019re convinced it\u2019s uncontrollable, why [would] we call it a pandemic?\u201d said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/16cd6173232a01ec04780db3eea4de79\">according to the AP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran has threatened to use force to suspend domestic travel<\/strong>, t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/middle-east\/iran-warns-it-could-use-force-to-halt-travel-amid-virus-20200306-p547rd.html\">he Sydney Morning Herald<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/middle-east\/iran-warns-it-could-use-force-to-halt-travel-amid-virus-20200306-p547rd.html\">reported<\/a>. This came after <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/en\/views\/news\/middle-east\/2020\/03\/05\/Coronavirus-to-infect-up-to-40-of-Tehran-s-population-within-next-two-weeks.html\">an Iranian health expert warned<\/a> that up to 40% of Tehran\u2019s 9 mn population could become infected by the end of the Persian month and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2020\/03\/06\/adviser-to-irans-foreign-minister-dies-of-coronavirus.html\">an advisor to the foreign minister died<\/a> from the virus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italy just locked-down an entire province:<\/strong> Italians living in the populous northern province of Lombardy will not be allowed to enter or exit as the government takes increasingly drastic steps to contain the outbreak, which has so far infected 5,883 people and killed 233, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/07\/italy-set-to\">the Guardian reports<\/a>. All public events will be banned, and people caught trying to enter or exit the province will be fined. The government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5561105a-f204-46e8-a5d5-32bb50b0495e\">last week announced<\/a> that schools and universities across the country will be closed until 15 March and that all Serie A football matches will be closed to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-05\/asia-stocks-to-slide-bonds-soar-on-virus-worries-markets-wrap?sref=mmeFTDW1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/SP500-March2020-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Friday trading was wild as fears of covid-19 again pushed stocks into the red:<\/strong> A last minute rally helped US stocks to claw back some of the losses sustained early on Friday to end a wild week of trading on Wall Street. The S&P 500 finished the day 1.7% in the red having fallen as much as 4% earlier in the day, with 2.4% being added in the final minutes of trading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9f94d6f8-5f51-11ea-b0ab-339c2307bcd4\">according to the Financial Times<\/a>. The late surge was caused by investors not wanting to be out of the market in case there was some good news about containing the covid-19 outbreak, said Max Gokhman, head of asset allocation for Pacific Life Fund Advisors. This drove the VIX index \u2014 a measure of share market volatility \u2014 to a new nine-year high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US bond market continued to make history as yields fell through the floor:<\/strong> The yield on the benchmark US 10-year bond collapsed to as low as 0.66%, having fallen past the 1% handle for the first time in history just two days before. \u201cThese low yields are no badge of honor for the bond market,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-06\/bond-markets-shred-history-books-in-grip-of-furious-fear-trade?sref=mmeFTDW1\">said Mark Spindel<\/a>, chief executive officer of Potomac River Capital. \u201cThey are indicative of a very downbeat, if not dire, view of the economic outlook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have more figures revealing just how much covid-19 is affecting the Chinese <\/strong><strong>economy:<\/strong> Chinese exports plunged 17.2% in the first two months of the year as the virus outbreak disrupted global supply chains and economic activity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/07\/coronavirus-china-jan-feb-2020-trade-data-reflects-outbreaks-impact.html\">Reuters reports<\/a>. This compares to a 14% drop predicted by a Reuters poll of analysts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The virus could cost the global economy USD 2.7 tn in lost output: <\/strong>Drawing on both plummeting consumer sales and slowing industrial operations in China and taking into account disruptions in global trade, supply chains and tourism, the worst of four doom and gloom scenarios conjured up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-coronavirus-pandemic-global-economic-risk\/?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg Economics<\/a> suggests a USD 2.7 tn loss to the global economy in 2020 if the virus remains on its current trajectory. Losses could potentially be curbed and even recouped in 2Q2020 if rapid containment becomes a reality but given the virus\u2019 spread to less authoritarian countries which would find it harder to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/22\/world\/asia\/coronavirus-quarantines-history.html\">shut down an 11 mn person city,<\/a> that outcome looks unlikely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-07\/saudis-plan-big-oil-output-hike-beginning-all-out-price-war?sref=mmeFTDW1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/Aramco-prices-March2020-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Commodities also continue to feel sting as crude takes massive one day hit: <\/strong>Oil prices dropped more than 9% to their lowest level in three years on Friday after Opec and Russia failed to reach an agreement to cut production in response to covid-19, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10f3e9d2-5f94-11ea-8033-fa40a0d65a98\">Financial Times reports<\/a>. The Russian-led group that has coordinated with the cartel to support oil prices since 2016 dismissed calls by Saudi Arabia to make another 1.5 mn bbl\/d in supply curbs in addition to the existing cuts of 2.1 mn bbl\/d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cue an \u201call-out oil war\u201d:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia has made the deepest price cuts to its main grades in at least 20 years, launching what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-07\/saudi-aramco-slashes-crude-prices-kicking-off-price-war?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg is calling<\/a> an \u201call-out oil war\u201d in response to Russia\u2019s refusal to play ball. Saudi Aramco slashed its April pricing by USD 4-6\/bbl for Asia and USD 7\/bbl for the US. <strong>Moscow\u2019s refusal to cut its output is being motivated by a <\/strong><strong>desire to wipe out the burgeoning US shale oil industry<\/strong>, Alexander Dynkin, president of the state-run Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-07\/putin-dumps-mbs-to-start-a-war-on-america-s-shale-oil-industry?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">told Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>IN NON-COVID-19 NEWS: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is on a regional tour<\/strong> that see him visit Jordan before heading to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and the UAE, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xlpe6r\">The ministry said in a<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xlpe6r\">statement yesterday<\/a>.
