The ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6b6dc75f-f325-4023-ac97-64fff07b8999\">will launch an international gold exploration tender<\/a> covering 56 km2 of the Eastern Desert on 15 March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/coronavirus-6-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Global stock markets stabilize<\/strong><strong> on stimulus hopes, Biden surge: <\/strong>Equity markets rebounded yesterday after almost two weeks in decline as investors grew more optimistic that global financial chiefs would launch a wave of stimulus aimed at containing the effects of the covid-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US equities recovered from <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c8ef11e0-25fc-4d1c-98cc-74ef23618890\">Tuesday\u2019s Fed-induced sell-off<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> The US\u2019 three major indices surged yesterday after lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-03-04\/congress-has-an-8-billion-plan-for-coronavirus-it-s-not-enough?sref=mmeFTDW1\">proposed USD 7.8 bn in fiscal stimulus<\/a> to protect the economy against covid-19. The Dow Jones gained 4.53%, the S&P 500 rose 4.22% and the Nasdaq finished 3.85% in the green. The healthcare sector led the rally, fuelled by Bernie Sanders\u2019 weak performance in the Super Tuesday primaries. Gains in Europe were more modest, with the FTSE 100 (+1.45%) being the biggest performer, and Asian stocks were more or less unchanged, with the Nikkei finishing up 0.8% and the Hang Seng down slightly at -0.24%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU, UK central banks expected to act within days:<\/strong> The European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BOE) look set to follow the Federal Reserve in launching a new round of monetary stimulus. With rates already at -0.5%, the ECB has little room for manoeuvre when it comes to lowering interest rates, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/04\/ecb-and-boe-to-take-immediate-policy-action-on-coronavirus-impact.html\">some analysts are expecting<\/a> a small 10 bps cut and a special facility to provide support to SMEs. In the UK, some market watchers believe the BOE will announce an emergency 25 bps cut this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMF, World Bank announce USD 62 bn in emergency funding:<\/strong> The IMF and World Bank have announced up to USD 62 bn in emergency funding to help fight covid-19. The IMF will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/04\/imf-announces-50-billion-program-for-coronavirus-relief.html\">\u201cimmediately\u201d release USD 50 bn in aid<\/a> to developing countries, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2020\/03\/03\/world-bank-group-announces-up-to-12-billion-immediate-support-for-covid-19-country-response\">World Bank is providing up to USD 12 bn<\/a> to bolster health services and disease prevention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of the IMF and World Bank: The IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings will be held <\/strong><strong>virtually<\/strong> next month due to concerns over the spread of the covid-19 virus, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2020\/03\/03\/pr2077-statement-by-imf-md-kristalina-georgieva-and-wbg-pres-david-malpass-on-imf-wbg-sm20\">a joint statement<\/a>. The meetings are scheduled to take place from 17-19 April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terrible data out of China, warnings over global economy not enough to dent stimulus optimism:<\/strong> Activity in China\u2019s services sector <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/china-economy-pmi\/chinas-services-activity-plunges-as-virus-wipes-sales-caixin-pmi-idUSZRN0008L4\">crashed to its lowest levels on record<\/a> in February as new orders fell to their lowest levels since the 2008 financial crisis. The Caixin\/Markit PMI halved to just 26.5, from 51.8 in January as covid-19 caused consumption to plummet. A microcosm of the collapse in domestic consumption was seen in figures released by the country\u2019s auto association, which showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-04\/china-car-sales-drop-a-record-80-as-virus-adds-to-industry-woes?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">car sales crashing by 80%<\/a> in February alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global growth to fall this year -IMF:<\/strong> The global economy will grow at a slower pace than 2019, IMF head Kristalina Georgieva said yesterday. The fund had projected growth to rise to 3.3% in 2020 from 2.9% last year. This would mean the fund is cutting its 2020 growth outlook by more than 0.4 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capital Economics cuts MENA GDP outlook:<\/strong> Capital Economics has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitaleconomics.com\/publications\/middle-east-north-africa-economics\/middle-east-economics-update\/the-impact-of-the-coronavirus-outbreak-on-mena\/\">lowered its MENA growth projections<\/a> by 0.5% to 2% due to the outbreak. Although the region\u2019s stronger economies should be handle temporary pressure on oil prices, the disruptions to trade and supply chains could stall economic growth, with the UAE economy being particularly vulnerable. \u201cThe UAE\u2019s economy is likely to be hit hardest and we expect the economy to do no more than stagnate this year, said Jason Tuvey, senior EM economist. \u201cThe UAE (and Dubai in particular) is the most vulnerable to a slump in global trade. There are likely to be knock-on effects on Dubai\u2019s real estate sector, which is already in a deep slump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/3\/coronavirus-5-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>CORONAWATCH- Covid-19 now has a higher mortality <\/strong><strong>rate<\/strong><strong> than Spanish flu:<\/strong> The current global mortality rate for covid-19 has reached 3.4%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/03\/who-says-coronavirus-death-rate-is-3point4percent-globally-higher-than-previously-thought.html\">the World Health Organization said yesterday<\/a>. In comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/44123\/9789241547680_eng.pdf\">the WHO estimates (pdf)<\/a> that Spanish flu \u2014 which infected around a third of the global population between 1918-20 and killed mns \u2014 had a mortality rate of 2-3%.<\/p>\n<p>Travel restrictions and other cancellations of large gatherings are ramping up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Saudi Arabia has suspended the Umrah pilgrimage for citizens and residents<\/strong> as a way to prevent them from getting infected with covid-19 in the large crowds and spreading the virus within the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-04\/saudi-arabia-to-suspend-umrah-pilgrimage-for-citizens-residents\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japan is considering delaying the 2020 Olympics to later in the year<\/strong> due to the growing risk of infection, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-03\/u-s-death-toll-rises-to-9-more-travel-curbs-seen-virus-update?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Italy is to close all schools and universities until 15 March<\/strong> and all Serie A football matches will be played behind closed doors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/04\/italy-orders-closure-of-schools-and-universities-due-to-coronavirus\">the Guardian reports<\/a>. The death toll in the country now stands at 107.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Qatari nationals will be barred from entering Egypt as of 6 March<\/strong> over covid-19 infection concerns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-egypt-qatar\/egypt-bars-entry-of-qatari-nationals-over-coronavirus-fears-idUSKBN20R1UF\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The decision comes after Qatar announced its own visa restrictions on travelers coming from Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a689544c-8981-45a3-a2eb-8ef072b60b2f\">earlier this week<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The European Central Bank has committed to restricting non-essential travel<\/strong> through 20 April, according to Bloomberg (link above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>All of these restrictions could set back the global tourism industry USD 47 bn per<\/strong><strong> month<\/strong>, which would make it the worst crisis for the tourism industry since the early 2000s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-04\/coronavirus-latest-travel-industry-could-lose-tens-of-billions?sref=mmeFTDW1\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. The International Air Transport Association estimates lost flight sales alone accounted for some USD 30 bn. Major airliners, including Lufthansa and British Airways, issued profit warnings and while budget airliners EasyJet and Ryanair have cancelled hundreds of flights. Italy\u2019s Alitalia has temporarily laid off some 4k workers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s tourism industry is no exception, even with only two confirmed cases:<\/strong> Tourists are increasingly cancelling March and April bookings, especially in the Red Sea and Upper Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/03\/04\/1303822\">the local press reports<\/a>, citing industry figures. The sources suggest that the industry will look to domestic tourism to pick up the slack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Egyptian companies will no longer be travelling to Berlin for the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/itb-berlin.com\">ITB travel exhibition<\/a><\/strong> after <a href=\"http:\/\/exhibitionworld.co.uk\/itb-berlin-cancelled-france-bans-all-large-events-due-to-coronavirus\">its organizers pulled the conference<\/a>.
