<\/a> Ethiopia rebukes US, Egypt on GERD talks:<\/strong> Ethiopia\u2019s foreign minister has criticized the US for taking a \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d position on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) but pledged to continue with the ongoing negotiations, the BBC reports<\/a>. Speaking during a joint press conference with the country\u2019s irrigation minister yesterday, minister Gedu Andargachew said that Washington had taken an \u201cundiplomatic\u201d stance during the recent talks and urged it to play a \u201cconstructive role.\u201d<\/p>\n

The minister was referring to <\/strong>a statement<\/a><\/strong> put out by the US Treasury last weekend<\/strong> that claimed that an agreement had been reached and called on Ethiopia to sign \u201cat the earliest possible time.\u201d \"The recent statement by the US we believe is undiplomatic and does not reflect a great nation like this,\" Andargachew said yesterday. \"We want Americans to play a constructive role. Any other role is unacceptable.\"<\/p>\n

Tensions have risen over Ethiopia\u2019s megaproject in recent days<\/strong> after Ethiopia skipped talks<\/a> in Washington last weekend, saying that it needed more time to consider the agreement. Egypt, which initialled the accord in Ethiopia\u2019s absence, expressed \u201cdeep dissatisfaction and rejection\u201d<\/a> with Addis Ababa\u2019s position on the talks after the meeting, and warned that it would use \u201call available means\u201d to defend its interests if the talks fell through. Andargachew rejected the statement yesterday, calling it<\/a> \u201cnot beneficial for everyone, except ruining relations.\u201d<\/p>\n

US reiterates commitment for negotiated solution:<\/strong> Washington will continue with its \u201ctireless efforts\u201d to find a solution to the dispute, Trump told President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in a phone call yesterday, Ittihadiya said<\/a>. The US president also expressed his appreciation for the \u201cconstructive political goodwill\u201d Egypt had demonstrated by signing on to the draft agreement over the dam\u2019s filing and operating schedule.
