Egypt remains \u201ccommitted to the negotiations,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/392NFUf\">the Foreign Ministry said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan had agreed to hammer out an accord by the end of February,<\/strong> but a final agreement has remained elusive even as the US and the World Bank stepped up their efforts to mediate the dispute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaks earlier this month suggested that Egypt and Ethiopia remain at loggerheads <\/strong>over key aspects of filling and operating the dam, with the US pressuring both sides to make concessions on how much water will be released each year, how to monitor the flow, and even on the definition of \u201csevere drought.\u201d US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said following the last round of talks that a resolution <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/363710\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Pompeo-says-EthiopiaEgypt-dam-dispute-could-take-m.aspx\">may still be months away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Happy Leap Year: <\/strong>It\u2019s nearly the end of February, but we have 29 days this year as it\u2019s a leap year as we add an extra day to have 366 days in 2020 and keep the calendar year in sync with the astronomical year. The airline said the decision is a result of \u201ctechnical difficulties\u201d but Private Aviation Association head Yousry Abdel Wahab tells the press that the airline is concerned about the spread of the covid-19 virus. EgyptAir had suspended flights on 1 February as a result of the outbreak. <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL5N2AQ27B\">Reuters<\/a> also has the story, and a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-airlines-factbox\/factbox-airlines-suspend-flights-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak-idUSKCN20K0GZ\">list of dates during which other major airlines have postponed flights<\/a>. Many have kicked flights out as far as April and June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naguib Sawiris is concerned that the outbreak will cause the global economy to shrink unless it is contained \u201cwithin the next few months,\u201d<\/strong> particularly as countries are beginning to seal their borders and trade is being disrupted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/02\/26\/egyptian-billionaire-naguib-sawiris-on-coronavirus-impact.html\">according to CNBC<\/a>. The Egyptian tycoon is also worried about how much havoc the virus would wreak if it were to spread in Africa, where healthcare services are ill-prepared, he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, Elsewedy Electric has moved to reassure investors<\/strong>, saying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egx.com.eg\/downloads\/Bulletins\/240254_1.pdf\">a regulatory filing (pdf)<\/a> that business has not been affected by the outbreak despite having contracts with Chinese companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Futures point to a lower open this morning for European and US markets today<\/strong>, while all Asian indices with the notable exception of China were solidly in the red at dispatch time this morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cases of the virus continue to spread worldwide yesterday: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Germany is struggling to contain the virus<\/strong> as the country\u2019s health minister warned the country is \u201c<strong>at the beginning of an epidemic<\/strong>,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/230fa2d2e2891ab2ccb6d9c8a5f479bf\">Associated Press<\/a> reports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>South Korea reported 284 new covid-19 cases<\/strong>, pushing the total number of cases in the country to 1,261 with numbers expected to rise as the government tries different testing techniques, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-southkorea\/south-korea-reports-169-new-coronavirus-cases-including-first-u-s-soldier-idUSKCN20K045\">according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The US has reported its first case with no known link to foreign travel<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/26\/health\/coronavirus-cdc-usa.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage\">New<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/26\/health\/coronavirus-cdc-usa.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage\">York Times<\/a> reported overnight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Greece and Brazil confirmed their first cases<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/coronavirus-brazil-confirms-first-covid-19-case-in-south-america-11943575\">according to SkyNews<\/a>. Brazil\u2019s case means the virus has now reached every continent except Antarctica.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iran confirmed 44 new cases<\/strong>, bringing the total to 139 cases and 19 deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-25\/cdc-warning-new-europe-cases-rattle-investors-virus-update?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">according<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-25\/cdc-warning-new-europe-cases-rattle-investors-virus-update?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">to Bloomberg<\/a>. President Hassan Rouhani said there are no plans to quarantine the most infected cities just yet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Canary Islands still has 700 people confined in a hotel<\/strong> after an Italian husband and wife staying at the resort tested positive for covid-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/feb\/25\/no-one-has-told-us-anything-tourists-on-lockdown-in-tenerife-hotel-coronavirus\">according to the Guardian<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GCC economies\u2019 forecasted growth has significantly decreased this year as the outbreak <\/strong><strong>hits the oil-rich countries where it hurts<\/strong>, Standard Chartered said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-26\/stanchart-cuts-gulf-2020-growth-as-coronavirus-hurts-oil-trade\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. Declining oil demand and hindered travel and trade have affected Saudi Arabia\u2019s growth projections the most, dropping to 1% from 2.3%, while the UAE\u2019s economy is now expected to grow 1.1%, down from 2.1%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-oil\/oil-down-3-as-virus-spreads-in-europe-mideast-new-u-s-cases-suspected-idUSKCN20K08N?il=0\">Oil prices<\/a> have also hit their lowest in over a year.<\/p>\n<p>US drugmaker Moderna has delivered <strong>the first batch of a potential covid-19 vaccine<\/strong> to US government researchers, with an eye to begin human testing by the end of April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/drugmaker-moderna-delivers-first-coronavirus-vaccine-for-human-testing-11582579099?mod=trending_now_pos2\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Don\u2019t expect results from clinical trials before July or August.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-06\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>EGP WATCH- Could the greenback\u2019s appreciation this week be a sign of capital flight <\/strong><strong>from emerging markets?<\/strong> The EGP <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TlvP8f\">lost against a rallying USD<\/a> for the second consecutive day to stand at EGP 15.54, from EGP 15.52 and 15.49 earlier this week. The EGP <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4a5f3ac8-b4a2-421b-a27e-f63008c4bb1b\">has risen<\/a> over 50 piasters against the greenback so far into 2020, extending a run that made it the second best performing currency in 2019.
