Deliveries start tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>STORY OF THE DAY- Markets are slumping amid worries about the global economy as <\/strong><strong>the Wuhan coronavirus is \u201c<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/02\/health\/coronavirus-pandemic-china.html\">increasingly looking like a pandemic<\/a><\/strong><strong>.\u201d<\/strong> Chinese markets tumbled this morning, with benchmark Shanghai Composite off more than 8% and the Shenzhen Composite plunging nearly 9% as the world\u2019s second-largest economy is effectively shut off from the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s unprecedented: <\/strong>\u201cChina\u2019s health crisis is testing the entire global economic system and placing unexpected and additional strain on the fragility of an extended boom,\u201d the Wall Street Journal notes. Countries are closing their borders and airliners are scrapping routes to China. Factories could be shut for weeks. Oil is down 20% since China identified the virus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-02\/china-oil-demand-is-said-to-have-plunged-20-on-virus-lockdown?srnd=premium-middle-east\">its own demand is off 20%<\/a>), and market watchers are now predicting that Beijing\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-02\/china-s-22-billion-injection-may-help-ease-global-market-rout?srnd=premium-middle-east\">injection of USD 22 bn into markets<\/a> today won\u2019t stave off further pressure on the country\u2019s stock markets, but might \u201cease a global sell-off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s squeezing emerging markets:<\/strong> \u201cA sense of foreboding is spreading through emerging markets on concern that the fast-spreading virus \u2026 could crimp global growth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-02\/no-reprieve-for-emerging-markets-as-traders-brace-for-china-rout\">Bloomberg<\/a> flatly suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it means for Egypt (so far): <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Egypt received coronavirus diagnostic kits yesterday<\/strong>, the World Health Organization (WHO) bureau in Cairo said in a press conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/Article\/1\/81210\/Coronavirus-detectors-to-be-delivered-to-Egypt-Sunday-WHO\">according to Egypt Today<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An evacuation flight from Wuhan will deliver Egyptian nationals to Matrouh <\/strong>later today. All those on the flight will be subject to a 14-day quarantine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It could constrain tourism growth this year: <\/strong>Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/02\/02\/1291754\">was looking to attract 600k tourists<\/a> from the Far East in 2020, half of whom would have been Chinese.<\/li>\n<li><strong>And it\u2019s going to slow the pace at which Chinese companies invest in Egypt. <\/strong>Case in point: El Nasr Automotive and China\u2019s Dongfeng <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/12\/el-nasr-preparing-feasibility-study-for-dongfeng-ev-manufacturing-project-8345\/\">were expected<\/a> to ink an agreement in 2Q2020 that will see them manufacture 25k electric cars using the state-owned company\u2019s facilities. Talks could now be delayed for \u201cmonths,\u201d Public Enterprise Hisham Tawfik said yesterday.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The EGX has so far proven fairly resilient<\/strong>, with the benchmark EGX30 edging down just 0.2% yesterday in fairly heavy trading as EGP 794 mn worth of shares changed hands, or about 26% more than the trailed 90-day average.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How deadly is it?<\/strong> Wuhan coronavirus appears to kill about 2% of those it infects, and it\u2019s not as contagious as measles. To keep that in perspective, SARS killed one of every 10 people it infected. Those at particular risk appear to include folks with a history of smoking, bacterial coinfection and high blood pressure as well as those who are above the age of 65.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The coronavirus has sickened 17,384 people and killed 362 people worldwide<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-wuhan-novel-coronavirus-outbreak\/?sref=mmeFTDW1\">according<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-wuhan-novel-coronavirus-outbreak\/?sref=mmeFTDW1\">to a Bloomberg virus tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you read nothing else on the subject this morning, <\/strong>make it this: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-closes-china-to-the-world-straining-global-economy-11580689793\">Coronavirus closes China<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-closes-china-to-the-world-straining-global-economy-11580689793\">to the world<\/a>, straining the global economy in the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image stand-out-borderless' ><a href='http:\/\/somabay.com\/'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/2\/Catamaran-1600px.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>SWF, Defense Ministry to ink restructuring pact: <\/strong>The Sovereign Fund of Egypt will sign an agreement today with the Defense Ministry\u2019s National Service Products Organization (NSPO) to restructure some of its companies, the Planning Ministry said <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/2\/SWF-MOP-statement.pdf\">in a statement (pdf)<\/a>. The agreement aims to \u201cmaximize the value of these assets and develop them,\u201d the statement reads. NSPO is a manufacturer and contractor, with companies working in industry, mining, agriculture, food, and services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swiss business delegation arrives in Egypt:<\/strong> A delegation of Swiss business leaders led by the country\u2019s head of economic affairs Guy Parmelin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.admin.ch\/gov\/en\/start\/documentation\/media-releases.msg-id-77981.html\">is in town<\/a> until Wednesday.
