With the pandemic still raging and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/oil-prices-extend-slide-as-covid-lockdown-fears-amplify-demand-worries-11608642281\">oil prices slumping again<\/a>, public finances in the region are expected to come under further pressure and the trajectory of the economic recovery uncertain. Add a new White House incumbent with a new foreign policy to the mix, and 2021 may turn out to be just as turbulent as 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egyptian stocks are looking increasingly appealing:<\/strong> Although Gulf equities are still considered a little pricey compared to other emerging markets, <strong>Egypt and Dubai are singled out as having more attractive valuations than their GCC counterparts<\/strong> based on their solid fiscal positions, Dubai-based head of equity strategy at Tellimer, Hasnain Malik tells Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also from the EM-verse: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Good news\/bad news on the debt front:<\/strong> The number of emerging- and frontier-countries with distressed debt has more than halved to only six from as many as 19 in March, but many are still struggling with growing debt piles and their fiscal positions remain uncertain, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-22\/default-story-far-from-over-for-virus-hit-emerging-economies?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ditto on remittances:<\/strong> Higher than expected remittances have helped cushion the blow of the pandemic in many EMs, but inflows remain under the threat of job losses in host countries, even as vaccines begin to be rolled out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN28W00S\">writes\u2019 Reuters Tom Arnold<\/a>. Remittances into Egypt from migrant workers <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e404ce68-8c21-4162-b1e9-10017814d19b\">rebounded<\/a> in the third quarter of 2020 after a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d28cf123-7ea0-43f5-a2cb-cb815e16b3db\">10% dip<\/a> in 2Q2020.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But they still might be in better shape than the developed world:<\/strong> Surging infection rates in advanced economies and rising inflows into EM make the outlook for the asset class better than the developed world, JPMorgan\u2019s managing director and head of Asia equity research James Sullivan tells Bloomberg (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2020-12-23\/jpmorgan-emerging-markets-outlook-better-than-developed-video?sref=mmeFTDW1\">watch, runtime: 4:49<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Italy is 2021\u2019s bond market darling:<\/strong> Bond traders plan to go all-in on long-dated Italian debt next year as investors search for investment-grade debt that actually pays a return, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-23\/italy-is-the-darling-of-a-bond-world-blighted-by-negative-yields?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported.
