The search giant is accused of having conspired with Facebook (itself the subject of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2020\/12\/ftc-sues-facebook-illegal-monopolization\">new anti-monopoly probe<\/a>) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-16\/google-sued-by-texas-over-abuse-of-dominance-in-antitrust-case\">rig the ad market<\/a>. This comes just days after the US Federal Trade Commission said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6ef95666-c653-473d-8611-2c469cb3fe41\">investigating Facebook, Amazon<\/a> and seven other tech giants and as the European Commission moves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-eu-tech\/u-s-tech-giants-face-6-10-fines-as-eu-set-rules-to-curb-their-power-idUSKBN28P0HH\">rein in big tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THURSDAY MORNING MUST-READ: <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/12\/21\/what-if-you-could-do-it-all-over\">What if you could do it all over?<\/a><\/strong> in the New Yorker, which gets into the existential angst of \u201cunlived lives.\u201d Or, you know, we could all decide to \u201coptimize for happiness\u201d in the one life we have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGNS OF THE TIMES at home and abroad:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vanguard is the first to have an equity fund with <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-15\/vanguard-makes-history-with-the-first-1-trillion-equity-fund?sref=mmeFTDW1\">more than USD 1 tn<\/a><\/strong><strong> in assets <\/strong><strong>under management. <\/strong>Kinda makes you wonder: How big is too big?<\/li>\n<li><strong>European tech companies are salivating over the IPO (and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a6ab3251-641a-4e2c-aa00-6b8486d10c68\">Spac<\/a><\/strong><strong>) craze in<\/strong><strong> the US<\/strong>, with the US\u2019 relatively lax listing rules making an overseas listing a more lucrative and attractive option, bankers tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-europe-ipos-tech-focus\/european-tech-firms-seek-to-share-in-u-s-ipo-bonanza-idUSKBN28Q0PS?il=0\">Reuters.<\/a> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Chinese online food retailer Wuong Net Technology\u2019s shares shot up more than <\/strong><strong>400%<\/strong><strong> yesterday<\/strong> two days after its IPO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-16\/china-web-retailer-soars-400-on-second-day-after-ipo-in-u-s?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. It all adds to investor befuddlement over the state of the IPO market, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sizzling-tech-ipo-market-leaves-investors-befuddled-11607868001?mod=hp_lead_pos4\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> suggests.<\/li>\n<li>3 mn Egyptians have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasdar.com\/103036\">registered<\/a> for the government\u2019s <strong>universal healthcare <\/strong><strong>scheme<\/strong>, says Finance Minister Mohamed Maait.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Emerging markets are still heading into 2021 with considerable risks even with the <\/strong><strong>prospect of a vaccine on the horizon<\/strong>, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-15\/year-of-pain-sets-stage-for-2021-s-top-10-emerging-market-themes?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. The issue: EMs will lag behind advanced economies in obtaining and distributing their share of the jabs. As the vaccines become available in all corners of the world and brings the pandemic under control, EM central banks could face pressure to reverse their record policy easing \u2014 especially as the EM debt pile is at all-time highs thanks to massive stimulus packages. These risks are also compounded by the possibility of a Biden administration taking a hardline on dictators, and geopolitical tensions from the rise of China.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s not to say developed markets are going to coast through, either:<\/strong> There are growing concerns of a potential inflationary burst as we go further into economic recovery, particularly in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/88cbae4e-b90d-4061-9786-f30c4c412c39\">the Financial Times<\/a> quotes analysts as saying. Economists here are anticipating a hold this time around after cutting rates 400 bps in 2020 on the back of food prices <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/790c7907-afb4-4e0c-9338-260b3db35554\">driving the headline inflation<\/a> rate up for the second consecutive month, to 5.7% in November from 4.6% in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Egypt-UK post-Brexit trade agreement will come <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/3\/12\/393664\/Business\/Economy\/EgyptUK-trade-agreement-takes-effect--December-UK-.aspx\">to effect<\/a><\/strong><strong> on New Year\u2019s eve.<\/strong> It is hoped that the agreement will unlock a spate of UK investments in Egypt, including in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, oil and gas, manufacturing, agribusiness, healthcare and education sectors, UK Trade Envoy to Egypt Sir Jeffery Donaldson said last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is set to visit Egypt in the first week of<\/strong><strong> January 2021<\/strong> in what will be his final official trip, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-16\/mnuchin-plans-final-overseas-trip-with-egypt-qatar-on-itinerary?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports.
