The Finance Ministry is close to finalizing draft amendments that will settle whether capital gains tax will indeed be making a comeback. The fate of the 10% capital gains tax, which was shelved for three years in 2017 in favor of a provisional stamp tax, is still unclear. You can get a refresher on the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/08\/capital-gains-tax-on-egx-trades-could-be-making-a-comeback-as-soon-as-this-month-7910\/\">proposals for its reintroduction here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The final round of GERD talks get underway in Washington tomorrow.<\/strong> Egyptian, Ethiopian and Sudanese officials will gather in the US capital to hammer out a final agreement following last week\u2019s technical meetings in Khartoum, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/news\/africa\/Ethiopia-Sudan-and-egypt-inch-closer-to-deal-over-Nile-\/4552902-5430416-12eaylv\/index.html\">the Sudanese Irrigation Minister has said<\/a> produced a draft agreement with some \u201cconvergence\u201d between the three sides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gov\u2019t to announce winner of Sixth of October dry port tender next week? <\/strong>A source in the Transport Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/01\/26\/1289221\">told the local press yesterday<\/a> that the ministry will hold a meeting at the beginning of February to announce the winning coalition in the tender to construct and operate the Sixth of October dry port. Two consortia are competing for the tender: one comprising India\u2019s Concord, Malaysia\u2019s PSA, and Hassan Allam, and another made up of Schenker Egypt, 3A International, and Elsewedy Electric.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fawaterk.com\/en\/\">Egypt\u2019s Fawaterk<\/a><\/strong><strong> is among ten startups to have been selected for the third edition of the<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startupbootcamp.org\/accelerator\/fintech-dubai\/\">Startupbootcamp FinTech Dubai accelerator<\/a><\/strong>, which provides support from a global network of entrepreneurs, investors and industry corporations, as well as USD 17k in funding, <a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2020\/01\/sa-egyptian-fintech-startups-selected-for-startupbootcamp-accelerator-in-dubai\/\">Disrupt Africa reports<\/a>. The currency has now gained 29 piasters since it began appreciating on 8 January when it was trading at exactly EGP 16.00\/USD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-26\/emerging-markets-on-edge-as-viral-outbreak-spreads-from-china?sref=mmeFTDW1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/Coronavirus-EMs-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coronavirus fears snuff out EM rally:<\/strong> The seven-week rally in emerging-market equities, bonds and currencies came to an end last week as concerns grew among investors that the coronavirus outbreak in China may develop into a SARS-esque pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-26\/emerging-markets-on-edge-as-viral-outbreak-spreads-from-china?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. The MSCI EM equities and currency indices both fell back during last week, while the JPMorgan EM bonds ETF also lost ground. \u201cThe Wuhan coronavirus outbreak has the potential to whipsaw Chinese equities and, indeed, all global risk assets,\u201d said Seema Shah, chief strategist at Principal Global Investors. \u201cWith valuations elevated, asset classes are already vulnerable to shifts in sentiment, and memories of the meaningful economic impact of SARS has the potential to play havoc with market confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Middle East equities caught in the crossfire:<\/strong> Stock markets in the Middle East fell at the start of the trading week as worries grew about the spread of the virus, with Saudi taking the biggest hit among GCC countries, closing down 0.7%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, in China...:<\/strong> The Chinese government has banned all wildlife trade nationwide and all outgoing overseas group tours in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which has so far left 56 dead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-wildlife\/china-bans-wildlife-trade-nationwide-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak-idUSKBN1ZP07Y\">according to Reuters<\/a>. Yet, Chinese officials are urging people to calm down, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-urges-calm-over-virus-during-critical-period-11580045718?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/a> Over five million people have already fled Wuhan, the province where the deadly virus was traced to, particularly a seafood market that was illegally selling wildlife. Egypt\u2019s Health Ministry distributed guidelines on handling the virus on Saturday to prevent it from spreading in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptindependent.com\/egypts-ministry-of-health-gives-instructions-on-dealing-with-coronavirus\/\">according to Al Masry Al Youm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/Miss-Germany-Web-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a>From 30 January to 6 February, Miss Germany returns to Somabay for the official Miss Germany Camp 2020. Hedge funds returned 10.4% after fees in 2019, well below the 31.5% return posted by the S&P 500 and the 16.6% return delivered by 50\/50 global equity bond index. Years of underperformance by hedge funds since the 2007-08 financial crisis have prompted institutional investors to pull capital from the industry, the FT says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the Fed winding down its repo intervention?<\/strong> The Federal Reserve Bank of New York injected another USD 74.2 bn of temporary liquidity into the money markets on Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fed-repos-add-74-2-billion-but-net-liquidity-declines-modestly-11579793755\">reports the Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Despite this, the amount of liquidity dropped by USD 10 bn to USD 176.1 bn as past operations expired. The Fed was expected to bring its repo intervention to a halt at the end of January but recently extended the program until the middle of February.
