Scanning the global press this morning, you could be forgiven for thinking the forum had morphed into TrumpFest 2020, with the US president stealing headlines on everything from climate and trade to Boeing and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saying that, Trump was involved in what deservedly is becoming one of the biggest <\/strong><strong>stories of the summit: Digital Tax:<\/strong> In the space of two days the Trump administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-20\/macron-trump-agree-no-tariffs-in-digital-tax-truce-through-2020?sref=mmeFTDW1&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosmarkets&stream=business\">made up with France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/22\/mnuchin-warns-uk-over-plan-to-tax-likes-of-facebook-amazon-and-google.html\">threatened the UK<\/a> with tariffs over attempts to impose a \u201cdigital tax\u201d on US multinational tech companies. \u201cIf people\u2026 arbitrarily put taxes on our digital companies, we will consider arbitrarily putting taxes on car companies,\u201d US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said at the forum yesterday, after the UK chancellor declared he would press ahead with the tax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is all part of what <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/united-states\/2020-01-17\/looming-tax-war\">Foreign Affairs<\/a><\/strong><strong> is describing as a \u201clooming tax war\u201d:<\/strong> For almost 100 years the international community has for the most part agreed on how multinationals should be taxed. But the growing cleavage between nations on how to ensure today\u2019s tech giants pay their fair share in tax threatens to upend this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/faculty\/itai-grinberg\/\">Itai Grinberg<\/a> writes. Negotiations are underway at the OECD to try and find an agreement between 135 countries on a new international consensus. If these fall through, the international tax system and the liberal order of things risks collapse, he writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile: We\u2019re not doing too great on the latest Global Talent Competitiveness Index<\/strong>: Egypt fell one place to rank 97 out of 132 countries in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gtcistudy.com\/\">2020 Global Talent Competitiveness Index<\/a> released at the forum yesterday. Weighing down our ranking in particular was our score in the \u2018attract\u2019 category, which measures the degree of economic and social openness. The Uber duo said that Egypt was the company\u2019s top market in Africa. The minister also discussed private sector funding with <strong>Citibank vice chairman<\/strong> for banking and capital markets, <strong>Jay Collins<\/strong>, and sustainable development with <strong>deputy head<\/strong> of the WEF\u2019s Center for Geopolitical and Regional Affairs, <strong>Mirek Dusek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qalaa Holdings signed up to the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/take-action\/events\/climate-action-summit-2019\/business-ambition\">Business Ambition for 1.5\u00b0C<\/a><\/strong><strong> at the forum yesterday,<\/strong> the company <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/QH-NR-1.5-Campaign-EA-Final-4.pdf\">said in a statement (pdf)<\/a>. The campaign, unveiled by the UN at its climate conference in Madrid last year, is trying to persuade business leaders to commit to reducing emissions and limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>In other non-Trump news coming out of Switzerland:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Al Nowais to invest USD 500 mn in renewable energy:<\/strong> The Emirati energy giant plans to set up a fund to boost investments in renewable energy in the Middle East and Africa, Hussain Al Nowais said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-22\/u-a-e-s-al-nowais-plans-500-million-renewable-energy-fund\">according to Bloomberg.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>The UK\u2019s Prince Charles unveiled a \u2018Sustainable Markets Initiative\u2019<\/strong> that aims to increase cooperation between the public and private sectors to cut carbon emissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/sustainability\/infrastructure\/479412-prince-charles-launches-sustainability\">The Hill reported<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BP isn\u2019t a fan of some of the climate proposals coming out of the US Democratic<\/strong><strong> Party: <\/strong>CEO Bob Dudley called Senator Bernie Sanders\u2019 plan to generate 100% of the country\u2019s energy from renewable sources \u201ccompletely unrealistic\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/22\/bp-ceo-hits-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-bernie-sanders-on-green-new-deal.html\">in an interview with CNBC<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get more creative about planning your futures, OECD tells teens:<\/strong> Career ambitions of teenagers are not changing in line with technological shifts, increasing the chances that their choice of job will be made obsolete by the machines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/education\/teenagers-career-expectations-narrowing-to-limited-range-of-jobs-oecd-pisa-report-finds.htm\">the OECD warns in a new report<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/Kite-Web-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>India\u2019s stagflation is spreading to other EMs:<\/strong> India is witnessing its sixth consecutive quarter of slowing economic growth, despite inflation speeding up for five quarters in a row, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-22\/india-s-painful-double-whammy-spreads-to-other-emerging-markets\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. Other emerging economies, most of whom are in Asia, seem to be sharing what the site describes as a \u201cstagflationary path\u201d \u2014 an economic condition characterised by high inflation and low growth \u2014 thanks to the effects of the US-China trade war.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Egypt is among the economies bucking the trend<\/strong>: Inflation is down 6.5% between 2019 and 2020 and GDP is up 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>In international business miscellany:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Boeing could be borrowing north of USD 10 bn to bolster its finances as it <\/strong><strong>continues to feel the effects of the 737 Max crisis,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/20\/737-max-crisis-boeing-seeks-to-borrow-10-billion-or-more.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosmarkets&stream=business\">CNBC reports<\/a>, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/18\/what-were-tracking-on-18-december-2019-8687\/\">suspended production<\/a> of the passenger jet last year after two fatal crashes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mitsubishi\u2019s subsidiary in Germany raided over potential fraud:<\/strong> The German authorities raided the German subsidiary of the Japanese Mitsubishi Motors, on allegations that it is using software to cheat emissions tests on some diesel-powered vehicles sold in Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mitsubishi-offices-in-germany-raided-in-diesel-emissions-fraud-probe-11579622693?mod=lead_feature_below_a_pos1\">according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Netflix is downplaying its US subscriber growth slowdown as it battles in<\/strong><strong> \u201cstreaming wars\u201d with competitors Disney and Apple<\/strong>, which launched rival services in November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/93f2b922-3c7f-11ea-a01a-bae547046735\">the Financial Times reports<\/a>. The streaming giant added only 420,000 domestic subscribers in 4Q2019 compared to the 1.5 mn it added in the same period a year ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Lebanon to decide on March Eurobond default next week:<\/strong> The new Lebanese government will decide next week whether it will repay its USD 1.2 bn Eurobond when it matures on 9 March, the country\u2019s Finance Minister Ghazi Wazni <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-22\/lebanon-s-maturing-debt-a-priority-says-new-finance-minister?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">said yesterday<\/a>. Bondholders are increasingly concerned that the government could fail to repay the 9 March bond, with investors pricing in a sovereign default at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China has ordered a soft quarantine of Wuhan in an attempt to contain the coronavirus<\/strong> after the death toll yesterday rose to 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-china-51215348\">the BBC reports<\/a>. Public transport in and out of the city is temporarily suspended during a week when mns of people are expected to travel for the New Year holiday.
