The event will bring together businesses, governments, and institutions to promote investment in Africa, and will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vz43FAea7W0\">live-streamed here<\/a> later today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The World Economic Forum kicks off in Davos tomorrow:<\/strong> Setting the tone for this year\u2019s event \u2014 themed \u201cStakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World\u201d \u2014 is a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_New_Nature_Economy_Report_2020.pdf\">WEF\/PwC report (pdf)<\/a> warning that more than half of the global economy (around USD 44 tn) is \u201cmoderately or highly dependent on nature...and is exposed to nature loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical and legal committees from Egypt, Sudan, and<\/strong><strong> Ethiopia will be in Khartoum this <\/strong><strong>Wednesday<\/strong> to hammer out a draft agreement on the filling and operating timetable for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) ahead of meetings at the end of the month, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/359799\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Draft-deal-on-Ethiopias-GERD-to-take-shape-this-we.aspx\">Ahram Online<\/a> reports, citing a statement by Sudan\u2019s irrigation ministry. The final round of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/889041c3-f40b-44d6-98b0-540d3e0e8646\">US and World Bank-sponsored talks in Washington<\/a> last week ended without resolving key points of disagreement. The sides will return to Washington on 28-29 January to finalize an agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday is a day off for any private-sector companies for whom it would normally be a <\/strong><strong>workday<\/strong> in official observance of Police Day, which is also the anniversary of the 25 January revolution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our friends at AmCham will host US Ambassador John Cohen for its monthly luncheon <\/strong><strong>on Tuesday, 28 January.<\/strong> Cohen will discuss prospects for commercial ties between Egypt and the US. The three-day event will wrap on Thursday, 30 January.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Egypt ranks 58 Most Innovative Nation:<\/strong> Egypt is ranked 58 out of 60 countries in the 2020 Bloomberg Innovative Index; Egypt is one of four countries to make their debuts on the list this year. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-18\/germany-breaks-korea-s-six-year-streak-as-most-innovative-nation\">annual report<\/a> ranks countries based on metrics including their research and development spending, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies. Germany snapped the top rank as the world\u2019s most innovative nation, breaking South Korea\u2019s six-year run.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roula Khalaf took over from Lionel Barber as the Financial Times\u2019 editor <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/khalafroula\/status\/1218093466707775488?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\">on<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/khalafroula\/status\/1218093466707775488?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\">Friday<\/a><\/strong>, making her the first woman and the first person of Middle Eastern origin to hold the position. Make sure you give us your name and complete contact information at the bottom of the survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/Kite-Web-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Passive fund managers would actually quite like a recession: <\/strong>A growing number of ETF providers believe that a recession could scare investors into pulling bns of USD from mutual funds and pile into low-cost ETFs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-18\/one-4-trillion-corner-of-the-market-isn-t-afraid-of-the-r-word?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. It sounds strange, given that ETFs would almost certainly take a hit in the event of a market correction. But the theory is that a recession would over the long-term cause investors to dump their active funds in favor of their cheaper cousins. This is what happened in 2007-2008, which Rich Powers, head of ETF product management at Vanguard, argues was \u201cone of the great catalysts\u201d for the growth of the now-USD 4.5 tn industry.<\/p>\n<p>(Remember: As we\u2019ve noted before, <strong>nobody\u2019s entirely sure will happen in a massive selloff, <\/strong><strong>and ETFs are part of the problem<\/strong>. JPMorgan estimated in late 2018 that as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-10-24\/jpmorgan-warns\">USD 7.4 tn in assets \u201ccould be subject to forced selling by passive funds during the next downturn.\u201d<\/a> Deutsche Bank said at the same time that it saw an <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/stock-market-risks-2019-deutsche-bank-2018-12-1027830481\">algo-led selloff as the biggest risk of 2019<\/a>. As it is, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/behind-the-market-swoon-the-herdlike-behavior-of-computerized-trading-11545785641\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> estimates that roughly 85% of all trading is on autopilot \u2014 controlled by machines, models or passive investing approaches.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The success of passive fund management is \u201cbuilt on a fallacy\u201d that they guard against <\/strong><strong>human error,<\/strong> which is simply not the case, Jonathan Guthrie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1c4382c6-36cb-11ea-a6d3-9a26f8c3cba4\">writes for the Financial Times<\/a>. Funds tracking bonds and stocks don\u2019t actually eliminate human errors because they essentially track the bonds and stocks selected by \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 humans. Passive fund management largely owes its success to the relatively minuscule fees they charge, which have put them on course to control over 25% of S&P 500 equity within the next eight years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investors look for inflation hedges as Powell eyes higher inflation:<\/strong> Money managers are channeling funds into safer Treasury inflation-protected securities (Tips), commodity-linked funds and gold to hedge against Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell\u2019s push for higher inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6b59875c-3914-11ea-a6d3-9a26f8c3cba4\">the FT reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>China will start talks with American companies to increase its imports of US-made goods<\/strong> after the two countries struck a \u201cphase one\u201d agreement that will see Beijing commit to buying USD 200 bn-worth of US goods over the coming two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china\/china-will-increase-imports-from-u-s-according-to-market-principles-official-idUSKBN1ZI07O?il=0\">reports Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeling optimistic about how the US-China detente will improve 2020 investment<\/strong><strong> prospects? Here\u2019s a dose of scepticism to balance that out:<\/strong> The preliminary agreement between Washington and Beijing has pushed the global stock market to new records, but financial markets may be getting ahead of themselves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d00c6e1e-3912-11ea-a6d3-9a26f8c3cba4\">argues the Financial Times\u2019 Michael Mackenzie<\/a>. Optimistic investors, Mackenzie argues, aren\u2019t giving enough consideration to future snags, including the fact that the phase one agreement won\u2019t remove all of the US\u2019 tariffs on China for another couple of years. Meanwhile, the RMB rally against the USD may be great news for those of us in emerging markets, but is more on the bad side for S&P 500 companies.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s kicking off again in Beirut:<\/strong> More than 100 people have been injured during clashes in Beirut as security forces fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets at hundreds of anti-government protesters outside parliament, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c4fe889e9588c83604a8f8defba6c7c0\">AP reports<\/a>. Protests against government corruption and economic mismanagement began last October and led to the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri and his cabinet at the beginning of November.
