<\/a> Direct flights from Russia to Egypt\u2019s seaside tourist resorts could make a comeback in <\/strong>less than a month, <\/strong>after a near five-year ban, Russia\u2019s deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters in Moscow, according to Russian news agency Interfax<\/a>. \u201cEverything is going according to plan,\u201d and the resumption is due to be announced \u201cin the near future,\u201d Bogdanov said. Charter flights to Red Sea destinations could resume as early as 10 May, <\/strong>with Russian airlines already offering \u201cpre sales\u201d to tourists, an aviation source told the Russian news agency<\/a> separately. The airlines are currently seeing a high level of interest in Egyptian destinations, especially amid restrictions on travel to Turkish resorts, which are also popular among Russian tourists, the source said. \u201cAt least two airlines are working on these scenarios,\u201d with each planning to offer flights from a different Russian city, they added.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve heard this: <\/strong>There have been multiple reports in the past five years that a resumption of flights was \u201cimminent,\u201d including a report<\/a> that predicted planes would be in the air last May. The issue remains on Egypt\u2019s agenda, with President Sisi personally raising the issue<\/a> with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past.<\/p>\n

Russia has maintained a ban on direct flights to Red Sea resort towns since <\/strong>the Metrojet<\/a><\/strong>crash<\/a><\/strong> in Sinai in 2015. <\/strong>Earlier this month, aviation experts told Interfax<\/a> that the airports of Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada were cleared by the Russians after security experts from Moscow completed safety checks.<\/p>\n

News of the possible flight resumption <\/strong>comes on the heels of talks<\/a><\/strong> between Foreign <\/strong>Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Russian counterpart <\/strong>Sergey Lavrov in Cairo last week during which, \u201cit was possible to reach an agreement [on the resumption of flights],\u201d Bogdanov told reporters in Moscow yesterday.
