<\/a> Benefits of the return of Russian tourists will be muted \u2014 for now, says Capital <\/strong>Economics: <\/strong>While the return of direct flights between Russia and Egypt\u2019s resorts will give Egypt\u2019s tourism some much needed reprieve, any economic benefits from the move \u201cwill be limited,\u201d Capital Economics said in a report out this week.<\/p>\n

Capital Economics\u2019 reasoning? Russia\u2019s covid restrictions:<\/strong> Russia still has restrictions put in place that require unvaccinated travellers to quarantine and isolate while awaiting PCR tests. While these restrictions don\u2019t necessarily target Egypt, they would discourage unvaccinated tourists from traveling, notes the report.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Egypt\u2019s vaccination program<\/strong>, which Capital Economics calls \u201cone of the slowest in the world\u201d with less than 4% of the population having been vaccinated. This will leave Egypt vulnerable to fresh outbreaks of the virus, particularly if greater international travel increases the risk of importing the more transmissible Delta variant.<\/p>\n

While these points do explain why Egypt is still in the UK\u2019s Red List, we\u2019re not sure they <\/strong>have it right when it comes to the Ruskies.<\/strong> Prior to Russian President Vladimir Putin lifting the six-year<\/a> flight ban a Russian delegation carried out health checks<\/a>in airports and hotels in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.
