Shoukry continues GERD talks in Brussels:<\/strong> It was Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry\u2019s third day in Brussels yesterday, where he has been holding meetings with European foreign ministers following Egypt\u2019s unsuccessful bid to get the UN Security Council to intervene in the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Earlier this week Shoukry discussed the situation with a number of foreign ministers<\/a>, Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and president of the European Council Charles Michel, while yesterday saw him sit down for meetings with the EU\u2019s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell<\/a> and his Belgian counterpart Sophie Wilm\u00e8s<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The EU appears to be taking the same approach as the Security Council:<\/strong> Following a joint meeting this week, EU foreign ministers declined<\/a> to condemn Ethiopia\u2019s decision to unilaterally fill the dam without an agreement, and appeared to rule out acting as mediators in the dispute. Like the Security Council, ministers expressed support for the African Union-led negotiations and called on all three sides to resume talks. Borrell reiterated the same points in yesterday\u2019s meeting, saying that he \u201cregrets\u201d Ethiopia\u2019s decision to fill the dam but urging all three countries to continue with the AU process, according to a statement<\/a> put out by the EU.<\/p>\n

Greece-Arab ties are warming:<\/strong> Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was in Cairo yesterday<\/a> for talks with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, during which the two signed an agreement that allows the \u201cestablishment of political consultations,\u201d the Greek foreign ministry<\/a> said in a statement without disclosing further information. Dendias said the meeting was aimed at \u201creaffirming Greece\u2019s strong ties with the Arab World and forging closer ties of cooperation to address common challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greece to join the Arab League?<\/strong> It was reported in Egyptian<\/a> and Greek<\/a> media ahead of the meeting that Greece will join the Arab League as an observer, but this wasn\u2019t mentioned in the official Greek or Arab League<\/a> post-meeting statements.<\/p>\n

Planning minister talks SDGs at UN forum<\/strong>: Planning Minister Hala El Said has discussed its latest voluntary national review at a UN forum on sustainable development taking place from 6-15 July, the ministry said in a statement (pdf)<\/a> yesterday.
