There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1f456c5c-ed19-4468-bccf-817c0fa49938\">a firm consensus<\/a> among analysts and economists we surveyed last week that policymakers will leave rates unchanged after inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a19da710-1330-415c-8993-290f63133dcb\">ticked upward<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surely weighing on their thinking:<\/strong> The US Federal Reserve has signaled it could hike interest rates twice in 2023, ahead of its earlier forecast. We have more on that below. Any move to hike rates by the Fed will have implications for carry trades across emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where rates currently stand:<\/strong> The overnight deposit rate is at 8.25% and the lending rate 9.25%, while the main operation and discount rates are at 8.75%. Look for an announcement late this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE- The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/EFG-Hermes-Saudi-Exchange-Virtual-Investor-Conference-English-Press-Release.pdf\">EFG Hermes and Saudi Exchange Virtual Investor Conference (pdf)<\/a><\/strong><strong> wraps up today<\/strong>. The event sees execs from 61 companies meeting with more than 450 international investors from over 190 institutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember that <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/11\/17\/cbe-greenlights-establishment-of-usd-600-mn-export-credit-risk-guarantee-company-6362\/\">export credit risk guarantee company<\/a><\/strong><strong> we heard about way back in <\/strong><strong>November 2019?<\/strong> Well, the plans have apparently been dusted off and the wheels set in motion for the company to launch in the next two months, a Central Bank of Egypt advisor has reportedly said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=16062021&id=25396834-7c8e-4d29-9a55-89bfc7771f34\">Al Shorouk<\/a>. The USD 600 mn company will be 100% owned by the central bank and will be dedicated specifically to increasing Egyptian exports to other African countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- Biden v Putin is the biggest story in the pages of the foreign <\/strong><strong>press this morning. <\/strong>The Swiss summit didn\u2019t quite turn out to be The Great Confrontation that some in the Western press were longing for, with both leaders exchanging pleasantries \u2014 and agreeing to return diplomats to their respective embassies and dial back diplomatic tensions. All the same, stark differences remain on display, as little progress was made on issues including cybersecurity and human rights. The central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/monetary20210616a.htm\">announced<\/a> that its main interest rate would remain unchanged at 0-0.25% following the end of its two-day policy meeting yesterday, but gave no indication about when it could start unwinding its huge USD 120 bn per month bond-buying programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is inflation giving the Fed cold feet? <\/strong>Federal Reserve officials seem to have shifted from their stance in March, when they indicated that rates would remain ultra low until 2024. \u201cThis change in stance jars a little with the Fed\u2019s recent claims that the recent spike in inflation is temporary,\u201d one economist told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/16\/fed-holds-rates-steady-but-raises-inflation-expectations-sharply-and-makes-no-mention-of-taper.html\">CNBC<\/a>. The earlier than forecast rate hike comes as new projections predict that inflation will rise by more than previously thought. Though the central bank reiterated its belief that higher prices will be \u201ctransitory,\u201d Fed boss Jay Powell acknowledged during his presser yesterday that there is a risk that inflation will accelerate beyond current expectations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action to support short-term funding markets:<\/strong> Policymakers moved to raise short-term interest rates in the funding markets amid concern that a USD shortage could push yields into negative territory and trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/am-edition\/\">a funding crisis among money market funds<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-16\/fed-tinkers-with-tools-to-defend-floor-from-market-awash-in-cash?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The market wasn\u2019t overjoyed at any of this:<\/strong> The news triggered a sharp sell-off in the treasury market, with the yield on five-year notes jumping more than 0.12% and the 10-year rate up 0.08%, and caused the USD to gain 0.8% against other major currencies.
