Heikal was on his way to the airport earlier this week to attend a board meeting of a Qalaa company in Sudan when he was turned back at Cairo International Airport, Qalaa said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/Heikal-travel-ban-Qalaa-14-6-2021.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a>. Authorities told him that he was not allowed to travel as the result of a court ruling handed down to him without him even being aware there were proceedings for him to attend (or to which to send his lawyer).<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t a move against Heikal or the private sector \u2014 it\u2019s a not-uncommon feature of <\/strong><strong>our legal landscape. <\/strong>The 1937 penal code allows court proceedings to move ahead \u2014 and verdicts to be handed down \u2014 without the defendant even being notified that they\u2019re taking place. <strong>Verdicts issued in absentia are automatically set aside when the defendant appears <\/strong>and the court then re-hears the case. Legal scholars and lawmakers have for years <a href=\"https:\/\/alwafd.news\/essay\/52183\">called for<\/a> the provision to be scrapped, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elbalad.news\/3516332\">most recently during a 2018 debate<\/a> about the overhaul of the penal code. Don\u2019t be surprised if the idea is back in the public arena in the weeks and months to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heikal dropped in to chat with the queen of nighttime talk, Lamees El Hadidy, to tell the <\/strong><strong>story himself<\/strong>, confirming that neither he nor his company were informed of the ruling before he showed up at the airport. He said Qalaa will clear up the situation with the cheque shortly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hR1ZIFRzoKU\">watch, runtime: 8:28<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- Nato gets tough on China:<\/strong> Western military leaders warned that China is presenting \u201csystemic challenges\u201d to the alliance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/news_185000.htm\">a communique<\/a> following Joe Biden\u2019s first Nato summit. The Biden administration has sought to rally Western countries and allies to counter Beijing\u2019s growing power, most recently at last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8cf84368-b7e8-434a-a07c-4caab9d8cf21\">G7 summit<\/a>, and judging by the content of the statement, it seems to have received a response, with Nato accusing China of undermining the rules-based international system and denouncing its lack of transparency over military programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is dominating the front pages of the global press this morning<\/strong>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/nato-welcomes-biden-pivotal-post-trump-summit-2021-06-14\/\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/government-and-politics-donald-trump-joe-biden-ap-top-news-world-news-962ddadf219a8ff0412d662163a33d81\">the AP<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/disagreements-flare-among-nato-allies-despite-relief-at-bidens-arrival\/2021\/06\/14\/3b7b0f6c-cd09-11eb-a7f1-52b8870bef7c_story.html\">the Washington Post<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f454033a-9975-4efd-92eb-9cf63306af7f\">the FT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Arab League will meet in Doha today for \u201cemergency\u201d GERD talks at <\/strong><strong>the request of Egypt and Sudan.<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has been in Qatar since yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MFAEgypt\/posts\/112617461048109\">holding a one-on-one<\/a> with his Qatari counterpart to talk about the GERD crisis and the process of normalizing bilateral ties following this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/385f8cb8-4b97-4f11-b5dc-3e1263b91ad9\">Al Ula pact<\/a>.
