The aim is to block large firms from dodging tax by booking profits in low-tax jurisdictions, making tax havens a thing of the past. The agreement could generate hundreds of bns of USD for governments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just because the G7 thinks it\u2019s a good idea doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s done: <\/strong>Look for more talks to take place at the G20 meeting in July.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wait, but what about FAANG?<\/strong> The big five tech companies (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google) are not being hit with an explicit digital services tax just yet, though the new agreement is expected to lengthen their tax bills by virtue of their size, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-05\/g-7-reaches-historic-deal-on-minimum-global-corporate-tax-rate?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Technical details on how exactly tech companies could be taxed are expected to be on the G-20\u2019s agenda this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global business press don\u2019t have many negative things to say about the news:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a308bbff-5926-47a1-9202-6263e667511e\">The Financial Times<\/a> calls it \u201can historic agreement,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-05\/g-7-reaches-historic-deal-on-minimum-global-corporate-tax-rate?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> a \u201clandmark [pact],\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/05\/g-7-nations-reach-historic-deal-on-global-tax-reform.html\">CNBC<\/a> a \u201ca significant development in global taxation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other international stories <\/strong>that should probably be on your radar:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A mega LBO stateside:<\/strong> A consortium of private equity firms will purchase a majority stake in medical supplier Medline Industries in a transaction that values the company at more than USD 30 bn, making it one of the biggest leveraged buyouts since the global financial crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/group-including-blackstone-nears-deal-to-buy-medline-for-over-30-billion-11622910788?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported last night. <strong>The story is everywhere this morning<\/strong>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3993dcba-4cbc-4564-a22e-8c36992589b2\">the Financial Times<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/05\/blackstone-group-nears-a-30-billion-deal-to-buy-medline-report-says.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google plans to make it harder for advertisers to track Android users<\/strong>, following a move by rival Apple, which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/be99ed9c-43d1-4f26-ac45-7fbf4e460475\">recently strengthened privacy protections<\/a> in response to increasing consumer concerns over how tech companies use our data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/03\/google-will-restrict-use-of-android-advertising-id-to-opted-in-users-.html\">CNBC<\/a> reports.
