We have the inside track on <strong>Actis\u2019 pipeline of potential Egyptian investments<\/strong> this year and beyond and take a <strong>deep dive into trends in the country\u2019s edtech sector<\/strong> \u2014 plus the latest on the (near) end to Eastern Company\u2019s monopoly on cigarette manufacturing and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA- It\u2019s going to be another windy, dusty morning<\/strong> in the capital city, with a 20% chance of intermittent showers, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2QtnVvN\">national weather service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY INTERNATIONALLY- Turkey\u2019s TRY tumbled 15% to 8.10 to the greenback<\/strong> following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8aec33ff-7ac6-4c37-ac87-0e08f836cad9\">decision to fire<\/a> the country's third central bank governor since mid-2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-21\/turkey-bulls-are-wrong-footed-after-central-bank-hawk-s-ouster?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The move to install a hawkish governor is \u201ca blow to investor confidence and raises concern the country will once again embark on a path of rock-bottom rates,\u201d which would be poison for the Turkish carry trade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good news for Egypt:<\/strong> The TRY could be dethroned from its status as the \u201cbest\u201d carry trade this year, clearing a path for the EGP to take the title as the CBE keeps rates on hold and Egypt\u2019s real interest rate remains among the highest in the world.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>** CATCH UP Q<\/strong><strong>UICK<\/strong> on the top stories from yesterday\u2019s edition of EnterprisePM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE led a boom in e-commerce in MENA<\/strong> last year, as the covid-19 pandemic caused the value of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7d79f49a-c160-4a6b-a14b-51f6c172bd55\">the sector to surge 52%.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Eastern Company <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc6218c5-a369-4987-b5ec-3e9aa59744bb\">has confirmed<\/a><\/strong><strong> its decades-long monopoly over the tobacco sector may be (partially) coming to an end<\/strong> after it emerged over the weekend that the government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/37788807-9726-457b-9df0-f4fca702d0f2\">has issued a tender<\/a> for a new manufacturing license.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The next IMF World Economic Outlook appears set to deliver mixed news: <\/strong>an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3be1e135-e4fc-46a8-95e3-c6e0f3668e82\">upward revision<\/a> of its global growth forecast to 5.5%, but a warning that emerging markets may now lag even further behind advanced economies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class='web-image'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2021\/3\/1600-Nawal-El-Saadawi-2.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prolific writer Nawal El Saadaw<\/strong><strong>i <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3tM6Ewd\">passed away yesterday<\/a><\/strong> at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of more than 50 works of fiction and nonfiction that champion women\u2019s rights. Often referred to as the Simone de Beauvoir of the Arab world (a comparison she wasn\u2019t particularly fond of), El Saadawi was a pioneer of feminist writing in the region.
